Is Ramona really terrible?

Due next month with a girl and our top choice of name is Ramona.

But I’ve just stumbled across another thread in which it was more or less completely panned Sad

Is it really that bad? What’s your impression of the name?

I like it, but then that might be because my cats are sisters, named Ramona and Beatrice

Smeghead90 · 31/12/2018 16:55

Reminds me of badly spoken English from Ramona out of Cold feet

Thiswayorthatway · 31/12/2018 16:56

Great choice

Etino · 31/12/2018 17:01

Great name!

HermioneWeasley · 31/12/2018 17:16

Love it

OneStepMoreFun · 31/12/2018 17:17

I don't like the 'moaner' sound of it. But I love the by Frank Black. (Not much help.)

Juliet89 · 31/12/2018 17:22

Looks like “moaner” is the problem most people have with it... I hadn’t really thought about that so will have to mull it over. I think I still like it though, and it feels a bit weird to change now, she’s been Ramona in my mind for months now! Hopefully just a last minute wobble!

We have a Ramona and we love it. She gets lots of compliments on it and is very proud of her name. Smile

daisypond · 31/12/2018 17:28

I don't like it, sorry.

cheesenpickles · 31/12/2018 17:30

Also we nickname her Rara (what her baby sister calls her) and Ramona. We've had a few Moaner Mona comments but you'll get something like that with any name. My own name has connotations with -smell and rhymes with Fanny. Go figure. Lol

Juliet89 · 31/12/2018 17:32

Cheese pickles That’s good to hear! Rara is sweet. Do you think a nickname is inevitable? I don’t particularly love any of the most obvious ones.

Ramona Quimby is my all time favourite book character ever. Go for it and buy your baby a full set of the books for when she is older. Sadly the books are rare to come across in the uk but the current American editions (avalible via amazom etc) are lovely.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 31/12/2018 18:03

I think it’s great. Would suit her at any age. Manages to be cute and cool and also sophisticated at the same time.

cheesenpickles · 31/12/2018 18:08

@bookmum08 we are currently on Ramona and her Mother. My daughter loves them as much as I did as a kid.

Yeah, I think nicknames will just happen. No matter what you call your kids and clever tricks you try to not let them happen, they happen.

ScreamingValenta · 31/12/2018 18:11

cheesenpickles That was one of my favourites! Such a brilliant series of books. I identified with the Quimby sisters because I had very sensible parents too!

haverhill · 31/12/2018 18:13

I like it. It reminds me of The Ramones (i.e. cool) but is also classy and strong.

RavenWings · 31/12/2018 18:15

It's lovely.

bookmum08 · 31/12/2018 18:15

cheesenpickles that one is great. When Ramona tries to sew trousers for her toy elephant and gets in a strop because it goes wrong is so like me when I was that age and so like my daughter now. Just brilliant. (hope I haven't plot spoilt. Sorry if I have).

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2018 18:17

I really don't like it.

FredaFox · 31/12/2018 18:19

No I work with one. She's so annoying.
Also it's old fashioned and not in a good way. Frumpy.

RumbleInTheJungle29 · 31/12/2018 18:26

I love it. My friend wants to call her future dd Ramola which is also nice.

masterstef · 31/12/2018 18:36

Romy is a good nn

slipnslide · 31/12/2018 18:40

@bookmum08 my own copies are so dog eared and I write my Qs like a cat wherever possible. 😁

Coldtoes28 · 31/12/2018 18:46

LOVE IT x

Forkrightorf · 31/12/2018 18:53

I know a little Ramona and she's the nicest sweetest girl. Go for it!
