Is Ramona really terrible?

Due next month with a girl and our top choice of name is Ramona.

But I’ve just stumbled across another thread in which it was more or less completely panned Sad

Is it really that bad? What’s your impression of the name?

I love it. Cool, feisty, feminine, strong

RandomlyChosenName · 01/01/2019 09:45

I’m afraid, never having heard of the name, I immediately read “Remainer” and thought weird Brexit choice. I imagine this would be quite common and you’d get a lot of raised eyebrows, especially with a baby born so close to Brexit.

Twillow · 01/01/2019 09:59

Don't like it, unless you have any Spanish connection.

Juliet89 · 01/01/2019 10:47

Thanks again, lots to think about.

I’m surprised people find it dated, I don’t think of it as an old-fashioned name... is it? As far as I know, it’s never been particularly well used. I’ve never met one of any age either.

No Spanish connection, does that matter?

I really like it.

Twillow · 01/01/2019 10:49

I just meant I don't dislike it in context (of being a name of Spamish origin), but otherwise I wouldn't see a reason to choose it.

masterstef · 01/01/2019 10:53

If you love it, stick to your guns op! You'll never ever get a name that everyone loves.

Josepheen I do love it in theory, I just want to make the right choice for her! I’m getting rathe tired and hormonal at this point too which probably isn’t helping

Was the au pair/nanny in Cold Feet - very funny character, but Spanish name of 1990s - that’s what I associate it with. Fine, if you like it.

dontticklethetoad · 01/01/2019 11:19

I love it. I wish I had thought of it when I had dd!

I love it too. Another Ramona Quimby fan here (though as an older sister I always identified with poor, tolerant Beezus). My friend’s daughter looks just like the little pen and ink cartoons of Ramona, though she has a different name.

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 01/01/2019 11:29

That was my choice is my DS was a girl. First time I've heard anyone else mention it. Love it

slappinthebass · 01/01/2019 11:32

I love it. It was on my short-list for my last DC, but I suddenly went off it near the end of pregnancy. Had a boy anyway, and now I love it again. No sure why I temporarily went off it.

TallOaks · 01/01/2019 23:14

I have a Ramona with no Spanish connections. No one has ever asked about that but don’t underestimate the amount of people who have never heard of the name at all. When introduced she can get all sorts of odd things repeated back to her... Romana, Romona, Remona being the most common mispronunciations. We still love the name though & it suits her completely. No one has ever brought up ‘moaner’ as an insult either as far as I know, despite being nicknamed Mona by some.

I think it’s a great name but it will split opinion. I’d say when she was younger we got about 50:50 on comments being either ‘that’s unusual’ i.e. ‘I hate it’ & genuine seeming compliments. She is happy with the name though which is all that matters at the end of the day

NooMe · 01/01/2019 23:35

Love it! 100% go for it

foxstar3 · 01/01/2019 23:59

The one at work is called 'moana' awful name
Ramona is fine but bet it will be shortened a lot

kirkandpetal · 02/01/2019 00:14

I personally don't like it. It reminds me of the awful nanny Spanish (or Portuguese?) character from Cold Feet who spoke loudly and was very OTT.

But if I've learned anything from baby name threads, if you like it, go for it. Thee will always be reasons for and against and mostly these are just personal opinion )(like mine). My two DCs names are always. criticised on here - one for being "too popular" and the other because of its literal Latin translation which isn't that great. Didn't stop me Smile

nutellalove · 02/01/2019 00:29

Nice if it gets shortened to mona

bookmum08 · 02/01/2019 11:53

About Ramona being 'old fashioned' - the Ramona Quimby character it seems so many of us love first appeared in the Henry Huggins book that was first published in 1950. She was meant to be age 4 so she would of been born in 1946. That means Ramona Quimby is now a 72 year old lady!! I often like to think how old a character from a book would be now going by when the book was published!
Anyway - I still love the name! Go for it.
