Names ruined by others?

I've always loved the name Ophelia (pans labyrinth).
While discussing it with DH he said the first thing he imagined was a 14 year old boy "I'll feel ya. . . round the back of the bike sheds." Absolutely ruined it for me.
Anybody else?

Annoyingly all my husband’s ex girlfriends have names I love - but for very obvious reasons they’re off the table!

HopeGarden · 18/09/2018 19:10

Nicholas. I suggested it to DH and he insisted on pronouncing it “knicker-less”.

Also Wendy, Mumsnet has ruined that name for me.

I loved Lydia until my husband said chlamydia and now it's ruined Angry

Cattenberg · 18/09/2018 19:28

I loved the name Soraya. I knew a girl with that name 30 years ago and she pronounced it Sor-ray-uh. When I was pregnant, I emailed this name to a friend and he emailed back "sounds like psoriasis". That killed it for me. I later found that many people do pronounce it Sor-rye-uh.

The same friend also put me off Lydia by saying "sounds like chlamydia" and Sunniva by saying "sounds like saliva", although it turned out that Sunniva has an unusual pronunciation (which I didn't like that much anyway).

A Mumsnetter put me off Rialta by pointing out it was a brand of motor home. No doubt DD will thank her one day.

Snap, Barbar!

strawberr · 18/09/2018 19:56

I loved the name Blair until my someone said it reminded them of the noise 'bleugh' (sick noise)Envy

I loved the name Amos until someone thought I said 'anus' Hmm

D2018 · 18/09/2018 19:57

Augustus- everyone immediately makes the Bloop connection which has ruined it for me 😭
Aurelia- my friend said it in a strong glaswegian accent and I immediately hated it.
Tabitha- I thought Tabby was cute as a nickname but the cat comments have made me doubt it.
Tristan- loved it until I posted it on MN and it got slaughtered LMAO it's apparently a wet, posh name

When I was pregnant I made the massive mistake of telling my family I loved and was considering the name Angus for a little boy. My dad said “like Deayton, who got sacked from tv for taking drugs and sleeping with prostitutes?” My sister said “like Aberdeen Angus, the delicious steak?”. And my brother said “it just sounds like anus to me”.

Cheers family, name choice ruined 😂 I did have a boy. I did not call him Angus.

wotsit99 · 18/09/2018 20:23

Love the name Lana but it spells 'anal' backwards.

SplatRat · 18/09/2018 20:29

I loved the name Flora until DH spoilt it for me saying there would be lots of crude jokes about spreading easily. Sad

Subla2401 · 18/09/2018 20:34

Elijah after someone said it sounds like 'I lied to ya'

Sunflower321 · 18/09/2018 20:44

Benedict Bendy Dick

Isaac I suck

villainousbroodmare · 18/09/2018 20:46

Well, Donald is obviously ruined.

tinytemper66 · 18/09/2018 20:46

Portia.... I'll ride ya!

FlippertyJibbet88 · 18/09/2018 20:49

I always wanted Eustace for a boy but I just couldn't get away from people saying "Useless?" every time I said it!

Leavesorange · 18/09/2018 20:54

Stephanie sounds like fanny. Sorry!Grin
At least the ones I know go by steph fit that reason

Leavesorange · 18/09/2018 20:55

For* that reason

FlaviaAlbia · 18/09/2018 20:55

Archie. I don't think I can actually say the name without involuntarily adding "stop it!" afterwards now. There's always something to stop...

tomhazard · 18/09/2018 21:30

Not me but my friend told me she liked the name Audrey when she was pregnant. I agreed and said to DH that she liked the name Audrey and wasn't it nice? He replied with 'it sounds like Orgy' so that ruined it for me! She had a boy in the end Grin

Piebeansandchips · 18/09/2018 21:44

Isabelle - my DB kept saying is a bell really necessary on a bicycle and ruined it!

Katinkak8 · 18/09/2018 23:01

I still love the name Matthew, but my husband for some reason says it more like Maffew and it puts my teeth on edge! Otherwise it would probably be my number one choice if DC2 is a boy!

NastyCats · 18/09/2018 23:05

Yes to Ophelia and Isabelle for the same reasons!

Shylo · 18/09/2018 23:07

I loved the name Noah but for some reason my DM insisted on pronouncing it Nor .... drives me irrationally crazy and so I chose Elijah instead - which I’ve never thought of as sound like I lied to ya as suggested by a previous poster lol

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/09/2018 23:16

it hasn't put me off it but I heard
"Gaybreeeeyull pack it in",now" being screached across a certain super market. I'm going to sound like a right snob now but it sounded really chavvy. Mind you I suppose any name can sound chavvy if it's screeched loud enough.

8DaysAWeek · 19/09/2018 00:05

Margot. Until I read on here someone likening it to maggot. Now I can't look at the name without thinking maggot.
