Names ruined by others?

I've always loved the name Ophelia (pans labyrinth).
While discussing it with DH he said the first thing he imagined was a 14 year old boy "I'll feel ya. . . round the back of the bike sheds." Absolutely ruined it for me.
Anybody else?

I’m a Lucy and I get called juicy, goosey and (thank my brother for this one) Loo seat.
Never been called a pussy though.

My sister is Isobel and we get to thank my brother again for the nickname ‘Isobel-end’

OP I love the name Clayton but I do wonder if you realise you’ll have 2 sons who will (most probably) be nicknamed Gray and Clay.

I was set on Verity for DD2. DH vetoed it as apparently at school his classmate Verity was referred to as Very Titty.

tinytemper66 · 20/09/2018 23:26

Another thread has ruined my own name-Siân 😂😂😂😂🤦🏻‍♀️

L0kiWh0 · 20/09/2018 23:33

Oh no, see-ann 😢😢😢😂

Clayton just makes me think of American hillbillies. It has that odd, southern accent ring to it.

Brits are weird about names supposedly sounding like rude/ridiculous phrases (sometimes the connections are really quite tenuous and far-fetched, see PPs on this thread). I find it rather narrow-minded tbh. Rather like the weirdness about redheads you still hear happening. Other nationalities are much more mature about names.

Love the name Alice
But that song also ‘slack Alice’ruined it for me!

Petalflowers · 21/09/2018 07:22

Violet - Violent - ruined by mn for me

Mark - someone commented to dh once that a mark was a stain left behind, ruined!

George - Georgie Porgie pudding and pie, generally referred to a fat person, mild term of abuse (although I’ve learnt that younger mn-enters don’t Get this connection)

Lola - Lola song lyrics

I like them both being called Clay and Gray. I know it's the reason most people don't like it, but it's the reason I do like it.
They will be very close in age so I think I'll be shouting "BOYS!" more often than their actual names anyway.
I could still be having a girl yet so it might not matter.

I love the name Verity and had only heard it as a last name until recently.

Love Clay makes me think of one tree hill.

Skyejuly · 21/09/2018 07:49

Lana/analeise for the anal issue
Margot= maggot

Greenteandchives · 21/09/2018 07:54

Amelia. A medical term meaning without limbs.
Melina. Black tarry faeces from intestinal bleeding.

MsHopey · 21/09/2018 07:55

@gilmoregal
Yes, I love one tree hill!!!
When DH was forced to watch it with me Clay was his favourite character.

@MsHopey
‘It's mine and DH choice and we're happy with it.’
Good for you! DS3 arrived 2 days ago and I find myself being constantly put off names by others opinion which is making it really hard to pick one! It doesn’t help that we don’t have a firm fave tho.

LoveTheBear85 · 23/09/2018 16:49

I have never had anyone emphasise the "fanny" aspect of Stephanie (speaking as one).

I am off of any names that end in a hard "k" sound (Mark, Jake, Zack etc), as say it too quickly and, as a Hunt surname, it isn't a nice one. Damn you husband!

Bachstelze · 23/09/2018 20:47

In my native France, carmaker Renault has ruined the name Clio for pretty much everyone.

GoneForFood · 23/09/2018 21:54

@lovethebear85 me neither. But my friend got ‘tit-fanny’ (Tiffany) all the time at secondary school.

Another friend got ‘jizzy-bell’ instead of isabelle (know as Izzy) but that’s teenage boys for you.

makeanewname13 · 24/09/2018 00:51

Ophelia.

Where I live it would immediately be shortened to Feelie which is local slang for a person who is "not quite right" shall we say.

A "mean girl" I went to school with was called Sunniva. "Son of a bitch" always sprang to mind...

Btw LOVE Greyson and Clayton Smile

LittleKitty1985 · 24/09/2018 13:31

Can anyone spot any problems with these names?:

Charlie
Toby
Henry
Brian
Calvin
Harvey
Dylan

TatianaLarina · 24/09/2018 14:47

Weinstein..

Brian that is called Brian...

GoneForFood · 24/09/2018 15:24

Toby jug

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 24/09/2018 15:55

Sorry OP I do think Grayson and Clayton are too similar. Gray and Clay? Hmm.

Kids should be raised and treated as individuals not a matching set. I see it with twins with "matchy" names through a part of my work and always think it's not psychologically healthy for their identities to start off like "half of a whole" rather than as unique people in their own right.
Most of the twins with matchy names I've followed up have invented non matching nicknames for themselves to give them some distinction from the other. They are close as twins obviously to each other (the bond is amazing and so interesting to investigate!) but still like to be seen as their own person.

jumpingjack123 · 24/09/2018 16:52

@Cattenberg - I'm a Soraya (so-RYE-ah) and have only ever had one person mention psoriasis, most people say it's pretty (without any prompting!). I admit to feeling miffed when people use it with no link to where it originates, but I think I'm just bitter it's becoming more common Blush

GoneForFood · 24/09/2018 19:16

@jumpingjack123 I love the name Soriya (autocorrect tried to change it to Sirius!) but the only one I know pronunces it like. Soh -reeya. I know she’s of Iranian descent so wondering what the correct pronunciation is or if it’s been lost in translation somewhere.
