Names ruined by others?

I've always loved the name Ophelia (pans labyrinth).
While discussing it with DH he said the first thing he imagined was a 14 year old boy "I'll feel ya. . . round the back of the bike sheds." Absolutely ruined it for me.
Anybody else?

Lucy.

Thanks to the person who pointed out that it rhymes with juicy and pussy and gits in the playground would combine all three.

I'd love to say that no one would ever do that but there's always one utter knob (especially at secondary) that would do exactly that.

PinkAvocado · 19/09/2018 00:24

Noah-sounds like someone whining ‘Noooo uh’
Anouk-a nook and a cranny
Ottilie-utterly...

Can’t unhear them.

firsttimebabybirther · 19/09/2018 00:49

Loved the name piper for a girl but our surname is similar to Mackey so OH said it sounded like papier-mâché , ruined .

We had a DS anyways and after watching me give birth I don't think OH would have dared even question me calling him lightbulb if I wanted too Grin

dinosaurkisses · 19/09/2018 00:55

Was sounding out the name Iseult for DD when both my mum and MIL independently commented that it sounded like insult.

Bcbcbcbcb · 19/09/2018 02:56

My friend wanted to call her ds Thomas, but their nickname was Robinson.

So Tommy Robinson ruined that one I guess?

Bcbcbcbcb · 19/09/2018 02:56

*surname! (Don't know how that became nickname)

Sophronia · 19/09/2018 02:57

Eliza after DH said it sounds like “here lies a...” in a cockney accent.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 19/09/2018 03:34

There are some names I won't use as they remind me of people I can't stand.

Is also wouldn't use anything spelt incorrectly unique to avoid the Chav label at school.

passwordfailure · 19/09/2018 03:42

I love Jocasta but that's Oepidus's Mother's name and that didn't end well.

karenmshane · 19/09/2018 03:57

I like Summer Isla for our next one (obs if it's another girl) .. I have Megan Rebecca and Alexandra Louise.. boys names are harder.. Teddy or Caleb are favs so far

MsHopey · 19/09/2018 06:41

So many more than I was expecting!
But yeah, if someone immediately says something "witty" and insulting about the name, you know it got no chance.

I hate people mishearing names. DS is called Grayson, the amount of people who then say "Oh, Grace is a weird name for a boy." Well, yes, it probably would be, if it was his name 🙄

Dh has form for spoiling names bless him...
Violet too similar to Violent
Georgina went to school with a really notorious ‘bad’ family and the dd was called this so vetoed!
Georgiana ‘sounds like a Disney princess’
Lydia as upthread
Albert - Prince Albert references
Alistair- middle age man name
Gregory - see above

MsHopey · 19/09/2018 07:03

Me and DH have already picked our names for both a boy and a girl.
We love the name Clayton for a boy.
Everyone we've told had an old friends, brothers, cousin's friend called Clayton who was an arsehole.
I'm so not changing my choice in name for that, I like to think a few months after baby is born the only Clayton they think of when someone says the name is ours.
Both our families hate our girls name too (I chose it when I was 13 and DH is fine with it), so either way we know other than us no one likes the names we've chosen.

Lydia chlamydia for me too.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/09/2018 11:30

I dont get this Lydia issue. Well i do get it but I don't understand why iyswim.
My dd is Molly. As as I'm.aware no one has ever teased her saying Molly's of her trolley.
She is like but we won't go into thatGrin
There are plenty of Ellies around but don't get called Smelly. I could go on. Why is Lydia singled out.

Leland · 19/09/2018 11:38

I'm always a bit baffled by these threads -- are there actual adults out there in the world whose immediate response to someone telling them they're thinking of calling their baby something entirely ordinary like Lana, Benedict, Flora or Audrey is to wittily reply: 'Lana is 'anal' spelt backwards!' 'Benedict sounds like 'bendy dick', Flora will 'spread easily' and 'Audrey sounds like 'orgy''????

I mean, are those honestly the associations their minds automatically make (in which case these conversations say a lot more about them than the names in question), or are they consciously trying to think like dimwit playground bullies, and genuinely believe they are protecting poor little Baby Lydia from being nicknamed 'Chlamydia' in fifteen years time...?

I would say, though, OP, that, given you already have a Grayson, that having a Clayton as well does sound quite similar -- same two vowel sounds in the same order, same emphasis, similar-sounding initial consonant...?

Our neighbours have a Jude and a Luke, and the mother is always complaining that neither comes when called, as only the 'oo' sound travels at a distance, and each assumes its the other who is wanted.

Metalhead · 19/09/2018 11:50

Lana, for the reason a pp said...

MsHopey · 19/09/2018 12:02

@Leland
I like them being quite matchey.
I was kind of hoping if I called one they'd both come.
I didn't really think about it the other way round. 🤣
Still sticking with it though.
I can't help it, I love it!

Yes to isobel for the same reasons as above!

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 19/09/2018 15:22

Abigail, when someone commented it meant “old maid”

I have friends who are convinced Lucy would be called juicy Lucy if she had big boobs. I’m still not convinced and I love the name

GrumpySausage · 19/09/2018 15:35

I loved Heath and it was forerunner for DS1 until 38 weeks when I said it to my mum. She replied with 'what. Like Hampstead?' Ruined.

wizzywig · 19/09/2018 15:42

Clayton, like Clayton Carlow from Dallas?

Leland · 19/09/2018 15:46

Abigail, when someone commented it meant “old maid”

It doesn't mean 'old maid', though, Good. It's Biblical Abigail was one of King David's wives. It is a name often given to lady's maids in novels, though (because the Biblical Abigail described herself as David's handmaiden) maybe your informant got confused.

motortroll · 19/09/2018 15:46

I am called lucy and I've never been called juicy Lucy as a tease (other than by fil and I told him to F off and stop being pervy) and I do have big boobs!!

motortroll · 19/09/2018 15:47

Also my friend has a Lucy and she calls her goose. (Lucy goosie) which I think
Is really cute!!
