‘Wet’ names?!

Cbeebiesrehab · 18/08/2018 21:34

I have seen multiple threads today where people have called names ‘wet’-both boys and girls names. What is a ‘wet’ name?! I’m a bit puzzled by this concept.

OP posts:

What is ‘wet’ though?

Off the top of my head I can think of
Wet Lettuce (Greg, Jeremy)
Wet Blanket (Lee, Liam)
Wet behind the ears (Barry, Tim)

All describing a different ‘wet’ and I can come up with names that fit all 3 categories.

@FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast I'm keeping a look out for DD1's name... It's looking like she's my only non wet child lol. It doesn't look good for the babies to come as most names on our lists have been mentioned. DD2 has only been mentioned once but DS is on here a few times... Sorry little man lol.

pipilangstrumpf · 19/08/2018 21:51

Quangot, your list contains so many strong names! The only ones I would consider 'wet' are Heath, Albie, Faye, Libby, Letty and Lottie.

Quangot · 19/08/2018 22:02

So interesting how we all see things differently!

sexnotgender · 19/08/2018 22:04

Nicholas.

Crunchymum · 19/08/2018 22:09

If Timothy is wet then Dave is as dry as a desert Grin

None of my kids names are here. Although my kids names are considered harsh (on MN)

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 19/08/2018 22:10

I have cousins called Dave and Tim..:)

Smafa · 19/08/2018 22:22

Totally dependent on personal connotations.

For me:
I've never met an unpleasant James
I've never met an unkind Sarah

'Jonty' sounds like a smarmy character from Jeeves & Wooster
'Donald' is forever tainted
'Nigel' is the worst name ever
...closely followed by Colin.

MissWimpyDimple · 19/08/2018 22:32

Leon.

Esme

I suppose we often associate a name with the first person we first knew having that name, either real or fictional. For instance, for many people, would Sybil always be Fawlty, Mildred always be Hubble? But here is my short "wet" list, including one or two not mentioned so far, and I disagree about some others further up, such as Alice.

My list is:
William, Colin, Charlie, Malcolm, Johnny (not John), Bella or Belle, Jemima, Wendy.

Funnily enough I like the name Jemima, although I wouldn't want to use it for a DD of mine; it might forever be linked to "Puddle Duck". It's also been mocked on MN as a name for gently telling children off, as in "that isn't very nice, Jemima". And "Tarquin" for the "precious" child. And I thought Wendy was a wet name before I had even heard of how it's used on MN, as a nasty person who deliberately excludes somebody from a group.

As for Charlie: every time I hear it I keep thinking of Roald Dahl's phrase "to torture little Charlie", and the wetter than wet song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, "cheer up, Charlie".

Skyejuly · 20/08/2018 07:42

I agree WITH Esme. Drab.

Shampooeeee · 20/08/2018 07:47

Yes to Adrian, how could I forget that one!

Also Seth.

Notso · 20/08/2018 07:57

Graeme
Tommy
Neil
Marti
Literally Wet Wet Wet

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/08/2018 08:00

Hilarious - I’m a Lucy - don’t think I’ve ever been described as wet Grin. I’m pretty sure the team I manage certainly wouldn’t GrinGrin

LeeValley2 · 20/08/2018 08:05

Definitely Lucy, Ellie, Freya, Cecily, Ottily, Timothy, Nigel, Adrian, Alistair, Archie, Ollie.

Girlslikeme · 20/08/2018 08:39

I’m thinking of men I have had relationships with over the years and their names put me off -
Timothy
Brian
Julian
Nigel

Also add -
Walter
Quentin
All the posh names eg Crispin

And girls’ names I would hate to be called myself -
Ruth
Rosemary
Wendy
Barbara
Judith
Mary

And those names which are coming back and popular on here which I think are awful -
Olive
Nora
Audrey type names

MeyMary · 20/08/2018 08:58

Alfie, Archie, Maisie, Millie, Minnie, Ellie, Rosie, Christian, Christopher, Daniel, Lenny, Gracie, name-Mae, Joseph.

Some or these names are great nicknames but thinking of them as someone's full name? No. Wet and wimpy in my personal opinion.

OutPinked · 20/08/2018 09:10

My name has been mentioned lots as has my Dbro’s- better inform my DM she has ‘wet’ children Grin. None of my DC’s names or the name we have chosen for this baby have though so I’m clearly not as bad a Mum as mine is Grin.

Did laugh at ‘Stalin wasn’t wet’.

germainegrainne · 20/08/2018 09:17

Russell
Elliot
Tom/Thomas

VioletFlamingo · 20/08/2018 09:45

Timothy.. I agree!
Emily
Clara
Peter
Anthony
Maya

Also agree it is highly subjective!

Skyejuly · 20/08/2018 12:23

It's not the name personally. It's the sound of the name that's wet ^

LeeMiller · 20/08/2018 16:57

One syllable names sound stronger than the longer version or y/ie diminutives.

Sam /Tim /Max /Lou / Tom sound stronger to me than

Samuel /Timmy /Timothy /Maximillian /Louis /Lucian /Thomas /Tommy

For girls, the full name usually sounds less wet than the diminutive:
Millie v Millicent, Mildred
Ellie v Eleanor

It's definitely connected to i/y sounds.

pipilangstrumpf · 20/08/2018 17:34

Although from your examples I think Lou sounds very wet (Loo!) Grin

I'd probably not shorten Louis!
