‘Wet’ names?!

I have seen multiple threads today where people have called names ‘wet’-both boys and girls names. What is a ‘wet’ name?! I’m a bit puzzled by this concept.

What’s the most frequently referenced name on this thread?

From what I’ve seen, it must be Robin!

limpbizkit · 19/08/2018 11:13

Also agree with Julian and Elliot.

limpbizkit · 19/08/2018 11:14

At the opposite end of the spectrum is 'Dave'

pouraglasshalffull · 19/08/2018 11:15

I don't think its about associating it with someone you know, its just a name that sounds wet and drippy. The Timothy I know is actually the total opposite to being wet but I still think the name is wet. As is Rupert, Robin, Eugene etc

People are taking this way too personally, if you like the name good for you don't get offended by it

Lee. So plain and drab.

It's not that Lee is 'wet', but I knew a few Lees as a teenager, and even back then I could never imagine someone looking down at a newborn and saying 'I shall name him Lee'.

To me Lee is the naughty kid smoking at the back of the bus and bunking off school.

Stringofpearls · 19/08/2018 11:21

Louis is a wet name in my opinion, just sounds it to me - not very strong. That said, I understand everyone has different tastes and would probably dislike other names that I love. Names are so subjective.

They’re wet because I can’t imagine threnody ever belonging to the cool/popular kid who goes on to work in the arts. More likely to have over protective parents and boast about never having tasted a fizzy drink Grin

CaptainCucumber · 19/08/2018 11:27

Whereas Lily/Lucy/Freya/Oliver/Louis - definitley not wet.

Tentomidnight · 19/08/2018 11:32

Samuel and Alice
Tobias and Polly
Louis and Molly

All wet AF

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 19/08/2018 11:35

Rupert, Timothy, Daniel, Jasper, Jack etc

Yeah, Jack Nicholson and Daniel Craig are so wet.

Wet to me is the sort of boy at school who was totally uncool/nerdy and was dressed by his mum and you could tell - Timothy, Julian and Justin.

CaptainCucumber · 19/08/2018 11:39

These threads are often derailed by people listing all the top 10 names and announcing they are wet/whatever because they’ve got a little Persophone and Peregrine at home who are mummies little angels and definitley not what at all Grin

I mean, how in hell is Amelia wet?!

CaptainCucumber · 19/08/2018 11:39

*what=Wet

bobstersmum · 19/08/2018 11:40

Nicholas but not Nick.
Thomas but not Tom.
Walter
Percy
Stanley
Sidney

It is a horrible thread, one of my dcs has been mentioned a few times. However, I guarantee that most names will appear at some stage. Wrongly imo. I mean Jack for example. How can Jack possible be considered a wet name? It’s one of the strongest names I can think of.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/08/2018 11:49

I’d probably say ‘sappy’ rather than ‘wet’

Anything like Lilly, Maisie, daisy, for girls or Timothy, Alfie, Albie, Oscar, for boys. In fact anything ‘ee’ for boys, except Charlie. Charlie is the ultimate appropriate name all through their life.

I also think Lucy is a strong name.
