‘Wet’ names?!

I have seen multiple threads today where people have called names ‘wet’-both boys and girls names. What is a ‘wet’ name?! I’m a bit puzzled by this concept.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Anything ‘ee’ For boys?

What about Henry - that’s a very strong name, not at all wet Hmm

dinosaurkisses · 19/08/2018 11:56

@CaptainCucumber because, as has been stated on the thread by a number of posters already, it is entirely subjective.

You and I might view Henry as a strong name, but that doesn’t invalidate someone else’s opinion that it’s the opposite.

There is no measurement of strength in a name other than people’s opinions when they hear it.

CaptainCucumber · 19/08/2018 11:56

Freddie and Zachary are also not wet names, whereas Rufus and Samuel definitley are

CaptainCucumber · 19/08/2018 11:58

Dinosaur - true, but there usually is a general consensus, I.e Candida being posh, Lexie-Maii being ‘chavvy’

To say that popular names e.g Jack, Amelia, Henry are wet when they clearly aren’t is odd

CaptainCucumber · 19/08/2018 12:00

In fact, horrid Henry is the opposite of wet, whilst Perfect Peter is wetness personified Grin

Itsear · 19/08/2018 12:00

Don’t rake it so seriously, one of mines names has been mentioned (Samuel) and he is strapping & manly and wouldn’t take offence. Wet names to me are:

Rupert, Timothy, Malcolm, Colin, Toby, Jasper, Julian, Peregrine etc All lispy & drippy.

dinosaurkisses · 19/08/2018 12:04

@CaptainCucumber I think Amelia is a wet name. You don’t.

Neither of us is wrong, just like if I said red was a lovely colour and you disagreed.

It’s a matter of taste and opinion and there’s no right or wrong answer.

GreenTulips · 19/08/2018 12:09

Lawrence - nobody has menetion it yet.
Joseph isn't wet - Joe is a stong name.

Daisy and Poppy are wet, same as Gracie.
Dislike Hugo, Josh, Jamie,type names

TubeTop · 19/08/2018 12:12

If last night's rogering from the unwet Tim results in dc I will name him/ her the wettest name I can think of to commemorate this thread.

Girl- Maybe Amelie
Boy- Timothy Jr... Or Roger!

pipilangstrumpf · 19/08/2018 12:15

I think Julian, Robin and Crispin are the ultimate 'wet' boys names.

I find them very strong sounding especially the 'n' at the end.

Soft or wet names are Noah, Alfie, Archie, Poppy, they sound so soft and wet!

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2018 12:16

Ottilie, Elodie, Amelia
Laurence, Elijah, Isiah

ChellySmuff · 19/08/2018 12:17

When someone is described as ‘wet’ I’ve always taken it to mean like a ‘mummy’s boy’ type personality (you all know the type)

Names I associate with being ‘wet’ are

Martin
Malcolm
James
Daniel
Toby
Timothy
Julian
Justin
Ross

pipilangstrumpf · 19/08/2018 12:18

Joseph isn't wet - Joe is a stong name

What makes Joe strong Confused I find it super soft and wet. John is strong! Jonathan even stronger.

It just shows how subjective this all is Grin!!

BakerBear · 19/08/2018 12:32

Jamie-Lea

Sophronia · 19/08/2018 12:51

Finley, Hugo, Louis, Elliot, Theo, Teddy, Sebastian, Mia, Millie, Imogen, Annabelle, Eloise

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2018 12:53

Milo, Luca, Ellie, Ella, Luke

I think that Vowel-heavy names and the letter L tend to make names seem 'wet'

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2018 13:17

Otis. Strangely, I don't find Oliver or Olivia wet sounding.

Sophronia · 19/08/2018 13:18

Amelia, Lily, Esme, Darcey, Lola, Tilly, Elodie, Verity, Felicity, Clemency

Rowan, Monty, Simon, Ollie, Rufus, Tobias, Colin, Norman, Trevor, Piers

deptfordgirl · 19/08/2018 13:44

It's funny how different everyone's associations of names are. I would never think of Elijah, Rufus or Noah as wet. To me they sound strong.

I tend to think flowery, romantic names as wet so: Lawrence, Gabriel, Raphael, Theodore, Reuben, although I do still like them, especially Reuben. For girls I think names like Petal, Blossom, Autumn. Although again they are very pretty.

whiskeysourpuss · 19/08/2018 13:46

Have told my Lucy that apparently her name is "wet"... she replied "yeah Lucy Burns was a wet lettuce right enough" in a sarcastic tone whilst making this face Hmm

But then people have been saying it's a dogs name for 16 years so I don't think she's much fussed about other people's opinions on her name Grin

shirleyschmidt · 19/08/2018 13:47

Neil
Ian
Alan
Robin
Tim
Colin

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2018 13:49

I really like Lucy. Neil, Ian and Alan are not wet sounding names - they are middle aged or older men's names.

shirleyschmidt · 19/08/2018 13:58

Oh to me they definitely are. There are plenty of 'older generation' names which aren't wet.

Also Quentin

shirleyschmidt · 19/08/2018 13:58

Do like Lucy tho!

mikado1 · 19/08/2018 13:58

I think it's strange that people are v much at odds on some of these when it's just the sound of the name rather than people you know or even a personality imagine. It's literally the sound. So I don't get Jack, Daniel as wet at all..

Anyone else waiting to see if there DC's names will be spared? Lol. Lucy is not a dog's name. Some people.
