‘Wet’ names?!

I have seen multiple threads today where people have called names ‘wet’-both boys and girls names. What is a ‘wet’ name?! I’m a bit puzzled by this concept.

I think some people are being very precious on here. In my opinion, Lucy is wet and flat. Other people don't think so, so they named their kid Lucy. Good for them, neither of us are wrong. No matter how many fictional characters or real people with that name you list Grin

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 19/08/2018 14:33

Well mine and DPs names are on here, mine much more so. I don't disagree with it and have always said it suits a little girl and not a grown woman. I don't think DPs name sounds wet at all.
Neither of my children's names have been mentioned thankfully.

I genuinely cannot believe that a PP thinks Adeline sounds wet. I think it's about the strongest sounding female name I've heard and I did consider it for DD which shows how subjective names are and how amazing and diverse names are!

Zipadeedoodah2 · 19/08/2018 14:43

What a horrible thread! Loads of names in the top 20 most popular have been mentioned, my sons included!

pipilangstrumpf · 19/08/2018 15:06

I don't find it horrible at all, but rather interesting and entertaining. I'm genuinely intrigued at the feelings people have towards names!

Does everyone have to like your sons name?!

Pudding01 · 19/08/2018 15:09

Love seeing threads full of people slagging off other people's names 🙃

Thankfully my DD's name hasn't been mentioned... But 🖕 to whoever said Holly 😂🙈😂

Marcipex · 19/08/2018 15:34

Timothy
Crispin
Joshua

Nellie
Millie
Minnie
Susie

ApocalypseNowt · 19/08/2018 15:51

Ben sounds like the sort of guy who cries after sex.

Skyejuly · 19/08/2018 16:10

Amelia
Neil
Alfie
Noah
Logan

pipilangstrumpf · 19/08/2018 16:55

Noah does sound very soft, almost feminine. Probably because it ends in a.

I find Reuben quite strong sounding, and also Magnus.

For everyone saying it’s a ‘horrible’ thread that was not the intention. I was seeing names being described as ‘wet’ on numerous threads and was wondering what criteria a name has to fit to be labelled as such. Turns out it’s a lot more subjective than most classifications (if you can call it that) but I think I get the general gist. My daughter’s name has been mentioned once-couldn’t care less. Not everyone is going to like your DC names and certainly not everyone on MN. I don’t think it’s something we can be precious about and if it’s a sensitive subject for you the Baby Names section is certainly not the place for youGrin it has made for an interesting read though.

My DH's name and my eldest son's name have been described as wet, DS2's name as 'strong'. Doesn't bother me a bit, and I don't think it is a horrible thread.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 19/08/2018 18:34

Both of my children's names have been mentioned here..:)

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 19/08/2018 19:50

If this is a 'horrible thread' then so are all baby names threads. It's people giving their opinions about different names and I have found it fascinating.

Its interesting that some names seem to be almost universally viewed as 'wet' but others divide opinion

I've never considered Lucy to be anything but a lovely name but I'm not offended that some view it as wishy washy

My DD's name has been mentioned (only once mind!) and I couldn't care less

MargaretDribble · 19/08/2018 19:54

My DD's name hasn't been mentioned and I'm flouncing. Wink

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2018 19:58

River, Raine, Isla, Innes, Ennis, Bay, Lake

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 19/08/2018 19:59

MargaretDribble I'm sure you've brought her up to be a mighty drip and she isn't getting the acknowledgement she deserves on this thread Wink

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2018 20:04

Ocean - you can't get wetter than that

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/08/2018 20:20

God, how could I forget Jeremy. That's up there with Rupert and Toby.

Shampooeeee · 19/08/2018 20:20

Wet names I can think of off the top of my head:

Julian
Lysander
Theodore
Miles
Lucas
Jessie

Millie/ Minnie
Jessica (I know some strong women with this name but I still think it sounds wet)
Beth

Rupert has been mentioned here a lot whereas I think of that as a strong name.

Annalogy · 19/08/2018 20:36

I think a lot of 90s kids were Chloes, Rebeccas, or Louises. Wet wet wet

Galvantula · 19/08/2018 20:47

Both my DS names on here, 2 mentions for DS1. I'd heard his name described as wet before, but never DS2.

All very subjective indeed.

pixieloux · 19/08/2018 21:03

Anyone else playing bingo? I've managed to find two out of three of my children's names on this thread about 95% of the names we have or are still considering for this pregnancy lol.

I don't know what qualifies a name to be "wet". My two children whose names have been mentioned are far from "wet" - They're little balls of fun, mischief and too much energy for my liking lol but that just goes to shows that this is completely subjective and doesn't actually reflect reality. You love the names so who cares?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 19/08/2018 21:17

oh yes full house. Mind you I only have two ('moistly named') children.

DC2018 · 19/08/2018 21:27

For me a "wet" name is bland, sad and a bit dismal. Some names that spring to mind are Norman, Linda and Geoff x
