I'm sure there has been many threads on this already.. read this morning that Mary is the hot favorite for girl & Henry for a boy.
Love Mary hope they use it, Princess Mary nice, fresh & underused, would be nice for Mary to have a comeback. Alice next at 6/1, prefer Mary.

I didn't say it was exclusively Catholic. I'm called Mary and I'm not catholic. And an example from 350 years ago, seems well, a little odd

“But the British monarchy's rules of succession most definitely have a "problem" with Catholicism (ie a legal rule that the heir may not marry one) that I personally would've though precluded such an obviously catholic choice”.
Just pointing out that it had never been a problem before.....

auntyflonono · 16/04/2018 07:42

Mary is one of Louise' middle names isn't it?

Thebirthdayparty · 16/04/2018 11:46

I think Mary is a classic and pretty name.

As far as I know, it was such a popular name, people started veering away from it but if they wanted to naneca daughter after a family member, they used it as a middle name instead. I don’t think it is like Louise st all. There was never a period where Louise was a consistent highly used first name whereas Mary was widely popular as a first name throughout the ages. In a way it was a victim of its own popularity before a time when people became more adventurous with girl’s names. It is, I think, the equivalent of naming a girl Elizabeth or a boy William or David. Not so popular nowadays but will never go out of fashion completely.

Kate wasn't a bridesmaid to Pippa, who didn't have any adult bridesmaids at all.

But the British monarchy's rules of succession most definitely have a "problem" with Catholicism (ie a legal rule that the heir may not marry one)

Not any more. The 2013 Succession to the Crown Act overturned the previous law about marriage to Catholics and a royal can now marry a Catholic without renouncing their place in the line of succession. The same Act overturned the primacy of males in the line of succession, so if the Cambridge DC3 is a boy he won't overtake Charlotte.

BelfortGabbz · 16/04/2018 12:15

Hope it's not Mary or Arthur.

Snowysky20009 · 16/04/2018 12:27

Alice, Mary, Felicity, Victoria, Ophelia, Eleanore, Caroline, Alexandra,

Louis, Charles, Philip, Arthur, David, Fedrick, James, Thomas,

Although I got the names right with both George and Charlotte (including middle names), this time I really couldn't bet on it!!

auntyflonono · 16/04/2018 20:04

I meant Edward's daughter Louise, not that the name Mary is like the name Louise Grin
Her name is Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor

BitOutOfPractice · 16/04/2018 23:56

What do you mean "it's never been a problem before"? @EmilyAlice?

Catholicism or otherwise has very much been a feature "problem" for the British monarchy for, oh I dunno, 400 years.

marilyntaylor · 17/04/2018 00:16

I think @EmilyAlice just meant using the name Mary hasn't ever been a problem to the royal family. The Queen's grandmother was Queen Mary, her aunt was Princess Mary, the Princess Royal and the Queen herself is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary.

TheyMostlyComeOutAtNightMostly · 17/04/2018 00:33

I can’t see them going for David - it’s an ill-starred name for that family because of the abdication.

The British Princess Alice was held in deep affection by those who knew her so I think that’s a definite possibility unless Philip vetoes his mother’s name.

For a male name I can see Philip or Arthur.

EmilyAlice · 17/04/2018 05:09

I did indeed mean that it had never been a problem for the royal family to use the name Mary, practice. If there had been an issue with the name I would have thought that historically speaking the accession of Mary II after the Glorious Revolution would have been that moment?

TheDowagerCuntess · 17/04/2018 06:00

Mary might be 'too Catholic' a name in Ireland, but not in England, and definitely not for the Royal Family, who have a history of embracing the name.

It also has quite U connotations - it's traditionally been a name given to upper class gels, before it went out of fashion (I know it's a TV show, but Lady Mary on DA, e.g.).

It's due a comeback - in fact, it's already coming back, so I'm not surprised it's got such good odds.

TheDowagerCuntess · 17/04/2018 06:04

...and the fact that some people use the word to describe women's (girl's?!) genitals is too cringe/coy/awful for words (who would even admit to doing this? Confused) - Mary is much greater than some random regional misappropriation.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/04/2018 06:06

A that was 300 years ago and the ban on the monarch marrying a catholic (recently repealed) came 6 or 7 years after her death.
B Mary was never expected to be Queen (neither would this child in fairness)
C the first queen (bloody) Mary sort of spoilt the name a bit. And she was SUPER Catholic.

Anyway, the name hasn't been popular among the close royal family for a number of years. I merely conjectured that that's because it would be seen as "too Catholic" but hey, I may be wrong.

Personally, as a Mary, I don't like it much so I'm biased anyway Wink

TheDowagerCuntess · 17/04/2018 06:14

I think it's a lovely name!

It happens to be my MIL's and she is Catholic. Grin

EmilyAlice · 17/04/2018 06:20

I don’t want to labour the point practice, but the Protestant Mary came to the throne after her father James II had been banished for being a Catholic (though the Glorious Revolution was slightly more complex than that).
The Act of Settlement was the post-hoc legal bit.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/04/2018 06:55

Crikey Emily I think we have laboured the point!

EmilyAlice · 17/04/2018 07:01

I like Mary, but think Alice is more likely to honour Prince Phillip. I think Arthur or Phillip for a boy.
😊

eloisesparkle · 17/04/2018 15:29

I don't like the names George or Charlotte so it won't be something I have predicted. Blush

applesandpears56 · 17/04/2018 16:05

Actually Emily could be an option! A nice classic name...

Thebirthdayparty · 17/04/2018 16:20

Princess Emily? Amelia perhaps!

EmilyAlice · 17/04/2018 17:02

You are too kind. 😀

RubyFlint · 17/04/2018 19:41

Rodney? Balonz?

My bet is on Eleanor or Amelia
Louis or Xander

dayinlifeof · 17/04/2018 20:05

it'll be Jack for a boy if William is to be believed.
