Sibling name for Merlin

Name changed because DH and I assumed that many Merlin's were born each year, apparently there are not, so this thread could be identifying combined with other posts.

DC1 is called Merlin and he is getting a brother in a few months. We had a name for a girl sorted before even getting pregnant with our first, but DH and I find boy names very difficult. Merlin was only on our list at about 38 weeks and I'd like DC2 to have a name sooner so I can relax.

Names that DH has vetoed:

Quinn
Byron
Adam
Idris

Names I have suggested that DH likes:

Xander

Names that DH likes:

Arthur - We are NOT having Merlin and Arthur. The piss would be taken forever more and people would think that's why we picked Merlin instead of us both just liking the name.

Names I like that DH has not expressed an opinion on:

Elian
Bastian
Emrys - DC2 will not be called this, just an example of one I like
Bennett

Any suggestions? I appear to be going off of Xander now that DH has started to like it.

No no no to Arthur under the circumstances. Not much help but I love Byron. Such a shame your DH doesn’t agree! I like Xander too although personally would prefer it as a NN for Alexander, however Alexander does sound awfully ordinary compared to Merlin so I see why you might not want to use it.

Apologies no more suggestions to add to the list as I think my tastes are no way near cool enough for you!

Uther?

Seriously though...
Ambrose
Amos
Luke
Evan
Eben

One of those is the brother of the only Merlin I have ever known.

RockafellerSkank · 04/03/2018 21:34

I think Merlin is fabulous and you need an equally fabulous name for a sibling.

Phoenix?
Griffin?
Ranger
Lancelot
Atlas

HotCrossBunFight · 04/03/2018 21:34

Maybe Dumbledore or Gandalf

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/03/2018 21:34

Bastian looks like you've forgotten the Seb off Sebastian. Do you not like Sebastian.
I don't think Bennett really fits with Merlin.
I love Xander.
How about. Xavier. Finbar. Conrad. Lucian.
. Gabriel. Theodore. Ezra. Reuben. Maddox.

Identifyingbabyname · 04/03/2018 21:35

@TroubledLitchen I don't care about cool names, I just want to like the sound of it and it not be associated with someone I don't like. I'd hardly say Adam was the cutting edge of names but I love it, DH has declared it 'too biblical'!

Xavier
Edmund
Seth
Ianto
Hector
Linus
Tristan
Morgan
Lysander
Taliesin

RockafellerSkank · 04/03/2018 21:36

Peregrine

Identifyingbabyname · 04/03/2018 21:37

@Awwlookatmybabyspider I didn't actually think of Sebastian, I think I was watching Neverending Story when that name got added. Will amend to Sebastian as I don't want my children condemned to a life of spelling their name out.

Merlin and Bastian sounds great.
Merlin and August..?

Thisusernamethingistricky · 04/03/2018 21:38

I think given Merlin is a pretty 'out there' name, you are going to have to go similar for his brother.

sourpatchkid · 04/03/2018 21:39

Sebastian is REALLY popular round her at the moment.

I love Byron too!

Also like Amos, Winston and Edison.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/03/2018 21:40

Augustus. (Gus). Elliot. Angelo

ErrantBakedBean · 04/03/2018 21:40

Sorry - just seen Bastian is discounted!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/03/2018 21:40

I love Winston

BestIsWest · 04/03/2018 21:41

Ambrose.

LilQueenie · 04/03/2018 21:41

Wynter

What was the reason for choosing Merlin? (which I love btw) It would help to understand what type of name you may like.

That1950sMum · 04/03/2018 21:42

I love Merlin. Reminds me of the gorgeous barman in First Dates!

My suggestions
Seth
Nathaniel
Mani
Theo
Bryn
Luther

Identifyingbabyname · 04/03/2018 21:42

@Thisusernamethingistricky I can see it's a bit unusual now. In my defence I didn't know anybody with children when I was pregnant, I assumed it would be uncommon enough for him to be the only one in his class, but not so rare that I'd never run into another. I was very wrong about that. I still love the name though.

Peregrine, obviously.

Baubletrouble43 · 04/03/2018 21:43

Merlin and Conrad? Hugo?Jensen? Agree with pp has to be something unusual....

ErrantBakedBean · 04/03/2018 21:44

If you like the sound of Merlin and Adam, how about Alban or Aubin?

That1950sMum · 04/03/2018 21:44

Or Bauble the OP could ditch the unusual names and have Merlin and Dave!

thehairyhog · 04/03/2018 21:47

I like Elian

Identifyingbabyname · 04/03/2018 21:47

@LilQueenie I suggested Merlin at about 5 months pregnant, DH hated it. I suggested again at 38 weeks when he was still nameless and it seemed to have grown on him. It was literally the only name we agreed on.

My criteria was that it had to be heard of, had to be easily spelt (my name has a stupid 'unique' spelling) and was uncommon enough that he wouldn't be Merlin S at school as I hated being referred to by my spelling. Merlin fits all of those criteria and it sounds nice. Plus he can shorten to Merl if he decides he doesn't like it as a teenager.
