Any ideas for a baby girl born in this snow/cold?

Neige (French for snow)
Theodora
Khione (Greek goddess of snow)

Gwenhwyfar · 02/03/2018 09:58

Neige is not a name though is it?

ChocolateCrunch · 02/03/2018 09:58

I know a little girl named Alba, also a Polish girl called Pola.

GreyDuck · 02/03/2018 10:00

Eira is really nice, but Eirlys (snowdrop) is my absolute favourite girl's name. I'm a little bit sad I can't use it for my summer baby.
I personally would be encouraged, rather than put off, by it being an 'old lady' name. Names go in cycles. (Anyone know an Effie aged between 10 and 70?)

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 02/03/2018 10:01

Gwenhwyfar - you say Neige is not a name, well neither are Snow and Winter, are they?

Gwenhwyfar · 02/03/2018 10:04

"Wales won't combust if non welsh citizens use welsh names."

Personally, I want the Welsh language to survive so the more people have Welsh names the better BUT I think it's disrespectful not to make an effort to pronounce them properly and that means asking Welsh speakers how they're pronounced and not anyone who may have have heard of the name. If you do call a baby Eira, make sure it's pronounced properly. It's not impossible at all for English speakers, just remember the eyh sound rather than ayh sound at the beginning.

Guinevere - my nick name is just not used as a name these days. Never met anyone with that name.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/03/2018 10:05

Milk - no, but some people might not have known that Neige is not a name so I was pointing it out.

Yes, but babies are usually given names that would have gone for their great grandparents rather than their grandparents. You don't see many baby Jean, Barbara or Sheilas.

Demetria (Greek goddess of winter), could have nn Demi)
Stephanie (on the feast of Stephen, deep and crisp and even)
Angelica, Angel, Angela, Angelina (from snow angel)

I’ve met a Guinevere. It’s rarity is a plus in my book.

TatianaLarina · 02/03/2018 11:48

Its - ^^

Emma, for the Storm Emma?

VileyRose · 02/03/2018 12:43

Love Emma suggestion

Everything is "not a name", until someone uses it as a name.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/03/2018 14:15

Tatiana - I wouldn't want to have a really common name like John, David, Stephen, etc. but having a rare name is quite a big challenge in life, believe me. Even people with quite common names have to repeat and spell their names sometimes. Imagine having to do that all the time and getting comments all the time.

junebirthdaygirl · 02/03/2018 14:24

Storm
Ronan Keatings (ex Boyzone) wife is called Storm.
Can you tell us what you decided on as l am fully invested now and need to know!!

TatianaLarina · 02/03/2018 14:52

I have a really rare name myself and I’m very happy with it thanks. As you say people with quite common names have to spell them, as there can be different versions, it’s no biggie.

In Iceland we have lots of 'snowy' names.

Frosti (frost)
Snædís (snow goddess)
Snæbjörn (snow bear)
Snævar (snow warrior)
Snæfríður (snow beautiful)
Ísólfur (ice wolf)
Ísleifur (ice heir)
Ísafold (ice land)
Þorri (midwinter)

RockafellerSkank · 02/03/2018 15:07

Thora is genius! Grin

SakuraMc · 02/03/2018 15:27

Depending on which characters used for writing here are some Japanese winter names.

Miyuki can mean Beautiful snow
Yuki can mean Snow
Yukie can mean snow blessing

SakuraMc · 02/03/2018 15:36

Pronounce syllables like this:

Mi rhymes with "me", but shorter sound...like the word "mimicry"
Yu rhymes with "you" but shorter sound....like the word "ukelele"
Ki rhymes with " key" but shorter sound....like "kiwi fruit"
E sounds like the "e" in "elephant".

Those four syllables make up all the names above.
