Any ideas for a baby girl born in this snow/cold?

Why on earth would you call your child Winter??!

Do you want them to be teased for the rest of their life?

I have a friend that called their February born daughter Summer. Confused

StarUtopia · 01/03/2018 22:59

So Summer has her birthday in Winter? Brilliant!

TittyGolightly · 01/03/2018 23:04

Yes. Weird.

lecossaise · 01/03/2018 23:09

Faina - there's a novel called the Snow Child (it's a modern version of a Russian folktale) and the little girl made of snow in it is called that.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/03/2018 23:11

No offence to any baby Olwens, but for me it's a name for an older woman. Eira, Aneira work at any age. Eirwen and Eirlys again a bit 'old'.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/03/2018 23:14

"Ia- ice
Gwyn - white
In welsh"

Ia is not a name though and Gwyn is a male name. Gwen is the feminine.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/03/2018 23:18

"Eira and it’s variations aren’t pronounced ‘ay’ at all - more like Ey-rah"

This is true, though there are probably people who pronounce them incorrectly.

tararabumdeay · 02/03/2018 00:11

Another one chiming in for the pronunciation of Eira. The 'ra' bit is obvious. As for the Ei bit - well: it's a cross between 'air' and 'eh. A definite but subtle roll on the 'r' and an a rather than an ahaa.

In my spud Welsh I'd say Ei r r ah.

When I met the most beautiful Eira, she seemed like the good fairy who came to bless my new baby (so gracious, so kind but that's her story not mine) I said her name as Eh err ah with the stress on the penultimate syllable. It's all about the shape of your mouth.

50ShadesOfEarlGrey · 02/03/2018 00:19

What about Alice, I know the pronunciation isn’t actually ‘ice’ but it’s enough of a nod to it.

lecossaise I loved that book and had forgotten about it, so thanks for the reminder. I definitely need to reread it.

Fadingmemory · 02/03/2018 00:34

Elurra (Basque for snow)
Galanthia (from Galanthus, Latin term for snowdrop)

Elle8989 · 02/03/2018 00:37

Some of these posts did make me chuckle.

Congrats op

JAPAB · 02/03/2018 00:40

Aloce (All ice)

Elle8989 · 02/03/2018 00:46

There are some lovely names meaning warmth or fire as baby is your bundle of toasty cuteness.

MikeUniformMike · 02/03/2018 06:58

Leave Eira alone. Pronounced correctly it is a lovely name. The Ei bit is very difficult to get right. It doesn't sound like Ava and Ada. The Ayra pronunciation is a bit yukky to a fluent Welsh speaker.
There are Welsh names that are popular on here that Welsh speakers would not use because they are very dated or because they are naff. The names make it plain that thre parents don't speak Welsh.
And there are always people on here who know loads of people with a name and they all seem to pronounce it in some strange way.
Call the baby Emma or something.

ivykaty44 · 02/03/2018 06:58

Eleri

ivykaty44 · 02/03/2018 07:01

Gwendoline means white circle
Amber

MikeUniformMike · 02/03/2018 07:10

Eleri is dated. Nice but will cause problems. Pronounced El LERRy.
Nowt to do with Snow. Welsh for Hilary.

ProperLavs · 02/03/2018 07:22

loving the expert welsh speakers.

I have found they are more vocal about being foreign language speakers then other groups.
So what if the name its pronounced 'incorrectly'? So what if it is old fashioned? No one is trying to pretend they are Welsh by giving their child a welsh name and why would they want to anyway?

Wales won't combust if non welsh citizens use welsh names.

dogsdinnerlady · 02/03/2018 08:48

Flake?
Drift?

Camomila · 02/03/2018 09:01

Just checking to see and yup, My name is on here! I love it and have only met one other.

I was born in winter and my dad worked in the ski industry. It still suits me as an adult as I am fair/blue eyed.

FartlekFucker · 02/03/2018 09:06

I had a colleague named Nieva (nee eh va). I think it's a lovely name

TatianaLarina · 02/03/2018 09:07

Guinevere meaning fair/white + smooth.

VileyRose · 02/03/2018 09:32

Snow

We gave our daughter middle name snow!
