Scottie! F. Scott Fitzgerald's daughter. My BFF in high school was Scottie.
Cool name.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/01/2018 17:30

If you're happy with a lifetime of people saying "beam me up" to her, it's fine

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 07/01/2018 17:33

Perelandra is the name of a fictional planet in a religio/science fiction novel from the 1950s (ish)

I know. It has also been used as a girl's name.

Lovesagin · 07/01/2018 17:36

Is this serious?

Didn't some kid sue their parents for giving them a ridiculous name? That needs to happen more to make 'im mad, me' parents think twice!

daisypond · 07/01/2018 17:50

Scottie! F. Scott Fitzgerald's daughter.
Her name was Frances. Scottie was her nickname.

Hygge · 07/01/2018 18:48

I would rather be called Scottie than Perelandra.

And unless you are a massive Katie Perry fan I'd rather be Scottie than Perry Katie as well.

I don't think the children who sued their parents for a bad name would have complained about Scottie.

A quick google says that he was named Gaylord (and may or may not be a real case) and another was called Talula Does The Hula in Hawaii.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 07/01/2018 20:00

I genuinely think Scottie is a great name. I don't understand this MN thing of picking a name for the birth certificate and then calling the child something else. I have seen it said that the child should be able to choose the birth cert name if they don't like the name. But sure, many people may not like their name. There seems to be an opinion that any names out of the ordinary will be a disadvantage as an adult. However, this is a different generation and as they grow it will become normal to have an unusual name.

If you love a name, I really think you should go for it. You can't worry about what other people think of it.

PinkAvocado · 07/01/2018 22:30

But if there’s a name which is so unusual no one really has heard of it, lots of people have said it is awful and it really doesn’t give the person to be named it any alternatives, then maybe change your own name to it.

Gacapa · 07/01/2018 22:36

There's something oddly appealing about it. I wouldn't do it. But ... yeah it's strangely pretty, spunky and kinda cool.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 07/01/2018 22:41

The only name with a similar 'feel' that I like is Piper. I quite like plainish, non-surnamey names generally, but Piper has a bit of something.

Gacapa · 07/01/2018 22:47

Is there any chance of revealing the surname. Even cryptically? That might help swing opinions.

Gacapa · 07/01/2018 22:51

I'm thinking of a name like the actress Holliday Grainger. I think instinctively most people would think Holliday is a daft name. But that whole name together is proper cool. A stunner. Scottie could be fabulous with a surname that elevates it to an all kinds of aces name.

What about Skara Brae?
Still a Scottish connection but not too obvious to anyone else

SingaSong12 · 07/01/2018 23:58

My first association hearing the name would be as in Scottie dog. I never watched the original Star Trek but know the series. If the franchise is still going then I don't think "beam me up Scotty" will disappear because those people really into them go back and watch everything. (A lot of young people I come across enjoying the current Star Wars know the originals realeaaed before they were born.)

ALLIS0N · 08/01/2018 00:09

Skaar Brae is not a girls name with “ a Scottish connection” It’s a place name - it’s a UNESCO world heritage Neolithic settlement in Orkney.

Anniethinggose · 08/01/2018 10:01

That's right, ALLISON

DrMarthaJones · 08/01/2018 10:02

Perelandra is another name for the planet Venus

Only in a book by CS Lewis. Not, like, actually.

KNain · 08/01/2018 10:32

What about as a middle name? I think there's a lot more scope for being creative with middle names as they are a nice way to honour family/connections, but the child doesn't have to use them or tell anyone about them if they don't want to. And much less likely to get teased about a middle name.

Kourtney Kardashian's daughter is Penelope Scotland Disick, her middle name is apparently because of Kourtney's Scottish ancestry (Sorry if this has already been mentioned). I'm not usually a fan of the Kardashians or the names they give their children, but I think Scotland can work as a middle name.

Could you go with Katherine Scotland Surname or Jessica Scotland Surname and nn to Scottie?

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 10:45

can't believe calling someone Scottie is getting such a bad reception whilst on another thread people are all squealing with delight about naming a child Tudor or Astrid😂

I think you will find the same sensible people who thing Scottie is ridiculous think the same of those examples as well. It's not as if we are all saying your name is terrible but Tudor is a great name hmm

I love Astrid.

I know a little girl called Caledonia. :) You might also like Iona or Skye?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/01/2018 10:46

I like Astrid! Grin

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 10:49

If you really love it could you use Scott as a middle name. Being Scottish myself I have my mum's maiden name as a middle name, which I think is quite a tradition up here. It's not Scott but if it had been my mum would've still used it. You'd still be honouring your dad and you could call her Scottie as a childhood nickname. She might outgrow it or if she likes it when she's older she can encourage others to use it.

This is a great suggestion imo.

Rudgie47 · 08/01/2018 10:55

I'd rather call a baby Sharon than Scottie.
Seriously all shes going to get is beam me up Scottie and Scottie Dog etc. Why do that to your child when theres no need?
I like Astrid as well.
At the end of the day its upto you.

Dolwar · 08/01/2018 11:43

I'd assume it was a boy as I Have a male horse with the same name

Dolwar · 08/01/2018 11:45

Fwiw Tudor (should be Tudur) is a Welsh boy's name
