I LOVE the name Scottie for a little girl but everyone seems to think I'm mad? Is it that bad? I think it sounds V cute Halo

There's a character on the blacklist called Scottie Hargrave (nickname I think - middle name was perhaps Scott) but she is a professional glamorous woman and it suits her.

It's not a name I would personally choose, but not nearly as bad as some posters are making out. I personally think it sounds better as a nickname - could you add another middle name (Scott, Scout)? That being said, my dds all had nicknames which aren't the ones I had wanted or envisioned for them.

CharizMa · 06/01/2018 14:08

I think if she were anything less than conventionally beautiful (and that describes most people) she would be at risk of being called Scottie Dog shortened to dog by boys at school. Better send her to an all girls school. I think I'm attractive but i was called 'ug' by one boy at school.

CharizMa · 06/01/2018 14:11

What about Stephanie with Stevie for short?

Scartlet / Lottie are nice too and could lead to an around-the-house nn of Scottie fake organically Grin evolving

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2018 14:13

Radley?

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2018 14:19

Scozia looks like an STD or skin complaint

Bananasandwicheseveryday · 06/01/2018 14:20

If you like, go for it. As a pp said, I don't understand the objections to 'nicknames'. Our school is full of Harries, Freddies, Alfies, Georges/Georrgies, Abbies, Joes, Sams etc. For the most part, these are the given names, yet, imo, they are all the nn version of other names. Personally, I'd rather a name is a little different rather than following the trend for whatever is currently fashionable .

Somebody suggested Scottina nn Tina. Could not resist to say that calling somebody "scotina" in Russian is very insulting. Who knows where we will end working in our global world.

lifechangesforeverinjuly · 06/01/2018 14:30

There's a female Scottie in Suits, I've always thought it was quite nice after hearing it there!

TSSDNCOP · 06/01/2018 14:33

Are you thinking of Harvey’s gf in Suits? It’s her surname isn’t it? Agree it’s a natural definition of Scott is your first or surname but not good in it’s own right.

HuskyMcClusky · 06/01/2018 14:36

I think it was her surname too. And anyway, I hated the way they said it: ‘Scardy’ (kind of Grin).

MotherCupboard · 06/01/2018 14:36

Isn't she more likely to become a strong independent woman if she hasn't had to contend with an absolutely ridiculous name?

If YOU like scottie so much, then change your name by deed poll and inflict it on yourself.

daisypond · 06/01/2018 14:37

Scozia looks like an STD or skin complaint - Mike, you're right, really. I don't know why I suggested it. It sounds nice in Italian, but people won't pronounce it correctly.

MotherCupboard · 06/01/2018 14:38

What if young scottie doesnt grow up to be a glamorous woman in a suit who can pull that name off with aplomb?

MotherofaSurvivor · 06/01/2018 14:41

I like Scottie! It's lovely!

My daughter is Mackenzie or Kenzie for short which a lot of people don't like but historically it actually was a girl's first name!

Plus if you met my daughter, you'd realise it really really suits her!

If you love Scottie then call her Scottie!

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 14:43

@MotherCupboard being a 'glamorous woman in a suit' is a state of mind as well as an actual thing so i'm sure she'd be fine Grin

WindyWindy · 06/01/2018 14:49

I'd assume the surname was Scott tbh.

RJnomore1 · 06/01/2018 15:41

Scarlett Charlotte?

Marcine · 06/01/2018 15:56

Name her Jessica and call her Scottie! Nicknames don't have to be directly related to the given name. I have loads of older relatives who are Eugene-called-Benny or Victoria-called-Annie.

NurseJay · 06/01/2018 15:59

So I've to name her a plain name incase she's not pretty? Hmm.

Why should I associate her name with looks? What if her personality suits her name?

I appreciate everyone's opinions and take them all on board...

I still love it lol!

NurseJay · 06/01/2018 16:00

And the comment about changing my name because I like it so much doesn't make sense lol! Surely you loved the name you called your child? So why didn't you change your name to that? 🤔

Love it. There was a character in Suits with the name. Do it x

BertrandRussell · 06/01/2018 16:09

“My daughter is Mackenzie or Kenzie for short which a lot of people don't like but historically it actually was a girl's first name!“

No it wasn’t. Not ever!

fightingfertility · 06/01/2018 16:51

Well people will htink your mad regardless. I mean think about it for a second. No matter what you do they will speak! You name your daughter something that is normal, ordinary! Everyone will blame you for not being creative. You try to be creative they blame you... This time they say you went too far. Or who know what bullshit they might come up with. It is not up to you to care believe me. If you find that name cute. Just go on and give that name to your daughter. However something stupid would be bad because it affects her life. The name Scottie sounds very cute. it is unique I guess. Go on and do as your heart desires.

Hygge · 06/01/2018 19:03

There are lots of surnames as first names now though.

I can think of three acquaintances with children named Riley (two boys and a girl), a woman I worked with has a Jackson (boy), we're related to a Harrison (boy), and my friend has a Morgan (girl) and is annoyed whenever we meet any male Morgan's because she says the name means Great Queen.

So I don't think that the TV Scottie being a surname makes much difference if the OP wants it to be a first name.
