Dog.

LuffPotion · 06/01/2018 19:12

She will get called Scottie the dog..not nice. Your name matters. It's been studied numerous times. It's a judgement call but I'd hesitate to make one of my first acts as a parent something could disadvantage my child.

TheQueenOfWands · 06/01/2018 19:14

Why is everyone saying 'dog'?

Is there a Scottie The Dog cartoon I'm not aware of? Like Snoopy or Clifford?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 06/01/2018 19:19

She will get called Scottie the dog

She will, she really will. No matter how much you love it OP, certain (not nice) nicknames are inevitable with a name like this.

Cute for a toddler, maybe, and it's easy for you to imagine it sounding cool as a teenager, but there will be years of 'Scottie Dog' 'Woof' etc.

I honestly wouldn't ignore all the posters saying that.

ALLIS0N · 06/01/2018 19:31

It’s really not the same as a woman called Millie. Because Millie is short for Mildred, or is sometimes just Millie on its own.. These are both normal names for a female human.

Scottie is a type of dog, or just a dog’s name.

Scott is a boys name.

People in Scotland will think you hate your kid, calling her after a dog.

There are dozens of beautiful Scottish girls names out there .

pilates · 06/01/2018 19:47

Awful, sorry

Ridiculous, for a girl or a boy.

Snowman41 · 06/01/2018 21:06

Scottie? As a name? For a child?

greendale17 · 06/01/2018 21:09

**Fine if your surname is Scott and so Scottie becomes your nickname.

Otherwise, no.**

^I agree

Snowman41 · 06/01/2018 21:10

My daughter is Mackenzie or Kenzie for short which a lot of people don't like but historically it actually was a girl's first name!

Oh dear.

Mac means 'son'

It couldn't really be further from a girls name if you tried Confused

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 21:30

@ALLIS0N 'Millie' is also short for Melina which although has a slightly different spelling is pronounced the same as 'Melena' which is a condition that is truly disgusting (it refers to the dark black, tarry feces that are associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The black colour and characteristic strong odor are caused by hemoglobin in the blood being altered by digestive enzymes and intestinal bacteria)

Kind of makes Scottie more desirable than cute little smelly black poo Grin

MotherCupboard · 06/01/2018 21:53

You totally missed my point which was, don't just assume it will be fine to give your child a stupid name because you're going to raise her to be a certain way, when she may not turn out anything like you imagine she will. And it really, really is a stupid name. One of the worst suggestions I've seen in many years on this site.

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 21:59

@MotherCupboard is Scottie your name! Shock

LolitaLempicka · 06/01/2018 22:01

I much prefer Scottie to Jessica, Jessica must be one of the most boring names ever!
I am laughing at the PP insisting Mackenzie is traditionally a girl's name! 😂

marywasneeavirgin · 06/01/2018 22:02

I'd say no. Makes me think of a dog, then a boy sorry

FairfaxAikman · 06/01/2018 22:05

What about Alba (Gaelic for Scotland) with Scottie as a nn?

brizzledrizzle · 06/01/2018 22:06

Beam me up Scottie! (and I'm still of child bearing age so not that old, thank you very much)

My teenager said his first thought would be that you like whisky.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 06/01/2018 22:13

There are lots of names now that are really just a nickname.

There are no end of Harry's that aren't really called Henry or Harold, Charlie's that aren't Charles or Charlotte. Why are those nickname names okay for adults but Scottie is unacceptable past childhood?

They are diminutives, not nicknames.

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 22:16

@brizzledrizzle sure but it's not your generation who will be her peers at school ect so if it's a worry she'd be teased this is of no consequence that a load of 30 year old's think of that phrase. In the year 2030 when she'd be attending high school I really doubt her of any of her friends will care much about what we think generally or whether any of these associations will even be relevant any more.

Anyway Scottie dogs are lushGrin

whywontteenswearcoats · 06/01/2018 22:17

If you really love it could you use Scott as a middle name. Being Scottish myself I have my mum's maiden name as a middle name, which I think is quite a tradition up here. It's not Scott but if it had been my mum would've still used it. You'd still be honouring your dad and you could call her Scottie as a childhood nickname. She might outgrow it or if she likes it when she's older she can encourage others to use it.

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 22:18

That definitely should surly put things into perspective for some people that really struggle with any unusual or different names. our children who are born this year will be going to secondary school in 2030 for gods sake! Very little will seem odd by then I imagine

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 22:19

Boys and girls may not even 'exist' by 2030 Grin Hmm

Hygge · 06/01/2018 22:20

None of these references are putting me off the name OP.

Beam me up Scottie - cult following TV and Film series popular cultural reference.

Scottie Fitzgerald - literary reference, by a still popular writer.

Scottie dog - they are cute, with a reputation for being an independent character. People are very fond of them.

Scottie whoever the Wrestler - never heard of him before, still not putting me off.

The worst thing about the name is she's probably not going to get her name on stuff on souvenir shops.

Snowman41 · 06/01/2018 22:24

Why are those nickname names okay for adults but Scottie is unacceptable past childhood?

Because they are not nicknames they are diminutives. Also Scottie is not acceptable in childhood either. It's a ridiculous suggestion for a name.
