I LOVE the name Scottie for a little girl but everyone seems to think I'm mad? Is it that bad? I think it sounds V cute Halo

OP posts:

All people may be referred to as something else by then Hmm who knows what will happen socially or within our culture. But the one thing I do know is that Scottish people will not think you 'hate your child' if you call her Scottie @NurseJay

I know this because I just asked my two Scottish friends who said they would think it a nod of affection to their country if anything. More a homage or respect for the Scotts in general.

I'm also starting to worry about peoples unhealthy obsession with Scottish terriers and the emotions they have brought up for some. There is help out there people! Just turn off Tin Tin and calm down

Hygge · 06/01/2018 22:30

"They are diminutives, not nicknames."

So Scottie is perhaps the augmentative then?

And still as acceptable in place of Scott as Charlie is now in place of Charles or Charlotte.

"Honestly ' beam me up scottie' that was said on a show probably over 30 years ago, what age are these other posters?!

The massive hollywood reboot of the last few years totally passed you by then, hey?

So I don't think that the TV Scottie being a surname makes much difference if the OP wants it to be a first name

It's not even his name! It's a nickname.

OP, its awful. Completely horrendous and your DD will be forever pissed off at you for saddling her with such a horrible non-name.

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 23:12

@FrancisCrawford there are loads of white Scottie dogs and snowy was a white Scottie dog. Anyway I was referring to a poster who implied that ALL Scottish people would think you 'hated your child for giving it a dog's name' so you disliking it as a Scott is of no significance as it just shows some Scott's (you) dislike it, however some (the Scott's I asked) like it. Vis a vi not 'all Scott's hate it's.

Also you don't seem to know much about Scottie dogs for a Scott Hmm I find this suspicious...are you actually from Scotland?

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 23:14

@peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers you obviously missed my reference to J.J Abhams on the previous page

NC4now · 06/01/2018 23:14

Are you trying to honour your Scottish heritage?
What about Caledonia, Nn Callie?

peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers · 06/01/2018 23:15

Well then your post makes even less sense, doesn't it?

FairfaxAikman · 06/01/2018 23:17

@Potteryprincess30 you get wheaten Scotties but not white. Maybe you are thinking for Westies?

In any case Snowy was a wire Fox Terrier.

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 23:17

In the new films no one ever says beam me up Scotty btw and actually a treckie fan I know said it's a Mandela effect thing about the original films and t.v series. No one ever says 'beam me up scottie'...like 'play it again Sam' it was never actually said.

Potteryprincess30 · 06/01/2018 23:22

People clinging on (pun intended) to Scottie dogs and Scottie from star treck is almost verging on some kind of passive aggressive fetish thing. It's kind of fabulous in a fever dream cultish type way. Dogs, westies, Scotties, even staffies aside, black, white....does it matter...we are all the same colour inside people Grin

TimesNewRoman · 06/01/2018 23:26

What about something like Ascot and Scottie for short.
If you like it, go for it. There are a lot worse names out there that people go nuts for.

peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers · 06/01/2018 23:30

It's a misquotation. Several episodes say "Scotty, beam me up", so not a million miles away.

No matter what reason you choose, its a terrible idea for a new baby girl.

PinkAvocado · 06/01/2018 23:30

I’ve become much more open minded about names in the last few years but Scottie is one of the worst suggestions I’ve seen on here. I would hate to be called it. I don’t love my name and often wish my parents had gone with one of their other ideas but I don’t hate it like I would Scottie. Until I read the whole thread I thought this was a joke or a nickname. Seriously, Scottie?!

LadyLovelace · 06/01/2018 23:31

But did you ask Scotts or Scots? That is the question. Wink

On another note, how can ‘Mac’ anything ever have referenced a girl? I’m quite sure Mac means ‘son of’.

LadyLovelace · 06/01/2018 23:33

Grin @ Ascot! Then give her a baby brother, Bracknell! Grin Grin Grin

Nothomealone · 06/01/2018 23:35

I know one Scottie, an American bloke first name Scott. You can call your dc anything you like, hence the number of Americans that call their girls Mackenzie but it might not be a good idea. There was a thread recently about names that got away and this name might be best on there for the sake of your dd.

demirose87 · 06/01/2018 23:42

It's a horrible name. Don't inflict it on your child.

RJnomore1 · 07/01/2018 00:02

Ascot in. Scottish accent is a scot

nooka · 07/01/2018 07:37

If you put scottie into google images you get pages and pages of pictures of dogs. Not surprising as it is the commonly used name for the Scottish terrier. I can't really imagine many women or girls appreciating the connection.

Great that you want your daughter to be a strong independent woman when she grows up. Give her a name with some flexibility not something you think is 'cute'. Cute is for toddlers, not for adults.

@FrancisCrawford you have exposed me! Dam it woman I will breed an army of white scotties to prove you wrong! Fly my pretties! No but seriously, The honest truth is i know nothing about Scottie dogs, or any dogs for that matter. I don't think i've ever actually even touched a Scottie (filthy creatures) and as for Tin Tin i've never even seen it. I was once told about it in a french butchers a few years ago and it sounded bombastic! I have been wrong (did I loose the internet ?) on so so many things.

I too don't have a regulation name (I realise we are in North Korea where these things are very serious and essential to living life) or (cover the children's eyes!) a regulation haircut.

and as for Scotts or Scots @LadyLovelace it's certainly a minefield of exploding indignation judgement bombs out there already (Hail Kim Jon) already so I couldn't possibly comment. Though your playful name is suggesting we can have a good time you and me Grin meet at the dog groomers?

Anyway, everything aside, the one thing I think everyone could consider is when the op's little Scottie throws her head back and laughs when some (by this time ancient) adult says 'Like the dog' when she is introduced. She lights up the room with her good nature and glows with open hearted joy. Just like my own daughter did when we watched Sue Perkins documentary on chimps and one big old monkey came up with the caption of her name.

I still must say I do find it perhaps more disturbing then the op wanting to name her daughter Scottie that through mass/world word of mouth we have completely fantasised a phrase that was never actually said. That essentially (although similar words were spoken) are a fabrication. That mandela effect is actually really unsettling when considering the bigger picture no? How misinformation spreads and becomes fact.

But obviously the most important thing here and the question on everyones lips is.... If the op names her child/dog Scottie.... Will people in Scotland think she hates her child? Forget Syria people, this is breaking news

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/01/2018 11:31

It’s a stupid name for a child. HTH
