just charmingly unusual haha. Now I know you're taking the piss

TacoFlavouredKisses · 04/10/2017 17:29

One woman's "charmingly unusual" is another's "unbearably pretentious".

Jobby Grin

KatieHF · 04/10/2017 17:31

Enoch!!. It's such a handsome name

Blahblahboo · 04/10/2017 17:31

none. Sorry but o don't I like any of them

HeteronormativeHaybales · 04/10/2017 17:32

I don't like most of them, tbh. Anselm is my favourite. I quite like Ptolemy, and Wolfgang, although it works best in a German context.

Tazerface · 04/10/2017 17:32

Says who?!

I disagree completely but as you're after 'charmingly unusual' then go for it. And give your son a lifetime of having to explain his name.

Ptol · 04/10/2017 17:32

It's not unbearably pretentious to choose an unusual name you like, anymore than it being achingly basic to choose a very well-known and well-used name.

Also Bram is lovely.

KatieHF · 04/10/2017 17:33

If you like the name go for it. Not everyone has the same taste

Ptol · 04/10/2017 17:33

Thanks Katie I'm edging towards Bram.

dustarr73 · 04/10/2017 17:33

Art and Bram are The only names I like there.
Jean spelled like that is a women's man.

Gene spelled like that is cool.
But they all seem too try hard.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 04/10/2017 17:33

Really don't do Enoch. I can't get past Enoch Powell. And Garfield will always be the obese, sarcastic 80s cat.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 04/10/2017 17:33

Wolfgang (but we are in Germany where it would just about squeak in as acceptable)
Art
Montgomery (although it is pretentious)
Vito

No others.

CarlHickbread · 04/10/2017 17:34

Love Abel

PrincessPlod · 04/10/2017 17:36

Monty is excellent...my youngest middle name

paxillin · 04/10/2017 17:36

Joby- a poo
Jean- girl
Abel- born again Christian
Percy- Perfect Percy
Anselm- Great name for a Bishop
Art- Hm, ok if actually Arthur, bit pretentious otherwise
Bram- Ok if called Abraham
Enoch- Powell
Roald- Dahl
Garfield- fat orange greedy cat
Montgomery (Monty)- General
Ptolemy- Claudius Ptolemy, try hard
Vito/ Wolfgang- strongly Italian/ German, is that your or DH's heritage?

I'd expand the list rather than reduce.

Lweji · 04/10/2017 17:36

I'd pronounce Jean in the same way as Gene, the same was as the female name.

Don't do that to him. Just call him Gene, FGS.

The most acceptable for me would be Bram and Joby, but it will always sound like a baby name.
I prefer proper names and then to use a nickname.

Garfield is the cat.
Montgomery is oooooold.

TacoFlavouredKisses · 04/10/2017 17:37

It's not unbearably pretentious to choose an unusual name you like

It is when you're saddling a baby with it for fear of looking "achingly basic".

Ptol · 04/10/2017 17:37

Thanks Princess lovely middle name, Monty is so cute and works well on adults too.

SprinkleOfInsanity · 04/10/2017 17:37

I think (looking at your list) I would substitute Joby for Jago.

formerbabe · 04/10/2017 17:39

Sorry op...they are dreadfully hipster and pseudo posh.

Joinourclub · 04/10/2017 17:39

Why not use Gene? I think the vast majority consider Jean an (old) woman's name unless pronounced the French way.

Art is the only name I really like, short for Arthur.

Ptol · 04/10/2017 17:40

Taco it's just what I happen to like- the achingly basic comment was just to demonstrate that everyone has different tastes and it's as easy to be rude about traditional names as it is about unusual names. It's meaningless.

I will just choose a name that myself and DH like like any parents would. I can live with people not liking the name as I don't like every baby name I come across, I just understand that people like different things - it's a good lesson in life for everyone to learn, tolerance.

NotAgainYoda · 04/10/2017 17:40

Matthew
Asa
Evan

Sorry, none of yours

The best is.... no, sorry. They are all quite bad.

Ptol · 04/10/2017 17:41

formerbabe DH is pretty hipster so maybe that's why- not necessarily a bad thing?
