Scottishish names...

I'm pregnant with DC2. We're team yellow and have a good list of boys' names. DD is Flora and i am struggling to find a girls' name I like as much.

I'd like a Scottish link but have discounted Isla, Iona, Eilidh, Ailsa, Fiona, Mairi, Mhairi for either being overused in our area or friends using them.

I need a name with two or more syllables as we have a short surname. I don't mind names that can be shortened. Help!

I think Catriona is my favourite from these ones, but not sure I like it enough to use it...

I like DD's name as it's pretty, has a slightly vintage feel to it and has a Scottish link. I'm not sure I'll find that combo if this baby is a girl!

Rhona?

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 18:17

So many of these names remind me of my parents' friends or ex-teachers! It's tricky to find something that's a bit 'fresher' for want of a better word.

I'm fully aware I'm being difficult.

If you go for Catriona and want it to be Scottish, it has to be pronounced Catrina (silent o). If you pronounce the "o" it's the English pronunciation.

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 18:20

I don't think I've ever heard the English pronunciation!

Finella
Fiona
I'd say they have a similar feel to Flora.

OhPuddleducks · 16/09/2017 18:22

Erica is Scottish I think? Or what about Greer or Isobel?

NoCapes · 16/09/2017 18:22

Isobel

OhPuddleducks · 16/09/2017 18:22

Really? It's my name and all I get on first encounters is the English pronunciation!

NoCapes · 16/09/2017 18:23

Oh X-post Puddle

Skyllo30 · 16/09/2017 18:23

Rhona was going to be my suggestion too.

Catriona is the best name ever Wink but they'll have a life being called Cat-ree-own-a even though I've never met anyone who pronounces their own name that way! Caitriona is the Irish spelling of it. (I'm Irish but live in Scotland and have the Scottish spelling).

Veterinari · 16/09/2017 18:23

Ishbel
Marshally
Elspeth

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 18:23

I'd already discounted Fiona as it's been used in my family.

Erica is nice but DH has said he isn't a fan Confused

How about Bess or Bessie?

Hobbitch · 16/09/2017 18:27

Shona
Heather
Alba

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 18:28

Isobel is along the right lines but just edging on too 'old lady' for me.

Bessie would give an alliterative name, which I don't want.

You're being very helpful so sorry if I sound negative. This is helping me sort out my name criteria!

Martha
Catrine
Orla

daisypond · 16/09/2017 18:29

Alba. Annis. Isobel.

FoofFighter · 16/09/2017 18:30

Ailish
Kirsty
Kirsteen
Fenella
Morven

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 18:30

A few people have suggested Heather but it doesn't really excite me. It's a bit plain.

OP posts:
CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 18:32

I don't love Kirsty either. Morven is quite nice but not the one.
