I'm pregnant with DC2. We're team yellow and have a good list of boys' names. DD is Flora and i am struggling to find a girls' name I like as much.

I'd like a Scottish link but have discounted Isla, Iona, Eilidh, Ailsa, Fiona, Mairi, Mhairi for either being overused in our area or friends using them.

I need a name with two or more syllables as we have a short surname. I don't mind names that can be shortened. Help!

We had twins in nursery who were Flora and Blyth. It was the first time I had thought about Blyth. But it really suited her.

FizzyGreenWater · 16/09/2017 20:22

Do you prefer Gaelic or non Gaelic?

Variations..

Elsie
Elsa as well as Elspeth
Jeannie as in Deans, as opposed to Jean
Janet
Janette
Jannette
Jeannette
Marget rather than Margaret
Meg
Merran rather than Mirran
Christian
Griselda and Grizzel
Thora
Wilhelmina
Effie, Phemie, Euphemia..

Look up Burns' and Walter Scots ' and RLS ' names. And John Buchan's. Loads there. And in the Lymond series by Dorothy Dunnet..

Moondialling · 16/09/2017 20:30

What about Clova or Calluna?

lalaland1985 · 16/09/2017 20:33

I'm Scottish too.. what about Caitlin?

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 20:33

Blyth is lovely but only one syllable and alliterative with my surname.

I'd prefer non-Gaelic as I don't speak it. We're not Highlands & Islands (not that Gaelic names are unique to there, but we're very mainland).

Annie is nice.

Alba is just the same as calling her "Scotland" so I'm not keen.

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 20:43

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 21:25

Just can't do it @Moondialling! It just doesn't sit well with our short surname!

Brenda is particularly bad with our surname Grin

Isobel and it's variants are so popular right now, definitely not old fashioned.

What about just going classic European? Elizabeth/Isabelle, Alexandra, Clare/Clara, Imogen, Mary/Maria, Anna, etc. Just as likely to crop up in Scotland as anywhere else.

CondimentQueen · 16/09/2017 21:44

I think it's just the Isobel spelling...I know Isabel (and all the variants) are really popular and that puts me off for whole different reasons. Believe me, I know how bloody-minded i sound.

I think you're right, though. Flora has links to Latin/French/Spanish and Scotland. I was hoping for a name I hadn't considered but I've not heard anything new really. Not that that's the fault of the very helpful Mumsnetters who've replied!

Rowan?

MonkeyJumping · 16/09/2017 21:57

What about Ishbel? Always been my favourite Scottish girls name.

Snuper · 16/09/2017 22:36

What about Sine or Sheena - same pronunciation, Gaelic for Jean.

Or Shona or Seonag (shonack)?

gincamelbak · 16/09/2017 22:47

Isobel rhymes with visible in Scotland, doesn't it? I think Isabelle is lovely though.

Ishbel
Rowan
Elspeth

a neighbour was called Torquilina.

bumpsadaisy11 · 16/09/2017 23:04

Ceileigh?

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 16/09/2017 23:15

Has Lilias been suggested yet? It's Scottish and has a similarly retro feel to Flora I think.

I know what you mean, there are loads of Scottish boys' names I love, not as many girls' names though.

sleepyhead · 16/09/2017 23:16

Jenny - it can be a pet form of Jean rather than short for Jennifer in Scotland.

Sophronia · 16/09/2017 23:25

Aileas
Catriona
Ealasaid
Eimhir
Elspeth
Fenella/Finella
Lilias/Lileas
Mairead
Marsaili
Morven
Murron
Sorcha
