I'm pregnant with DC2. We're team yellow and have a good list of boys' names. DD is Flora and i am struggling to find a girls' name I like as much.

I'd like a Scottish link but have discounted Isla, Iona, Eilidh, Ailsa, Fiona, Mairi, Mhairi for either being overused in our area or friends using them.

I need a name with two or more syllables as we have a short surname. I don't mind names that can be shortened. Help!

Eleanor? I loved this name and Evelyn but my DP wasn't keen!
I also love Rowan.
I know an Eilis (pronounced Ay-lish), very pretty name

WhiteHairReally · 17/09/2017 00:57

Following esk1mo's suggestion,

Rosslyn as in Rosslyn Chapel, just outside Edinburgh.

The Place Names track can take you to Iona, which you've already ruled out. I do know of a little girl called Tiree.

Helen - as in 'Fair Helen of Kirkconnel'

PokemonDont · 17/09/2017 01:01

Sheena? Oona?

You discounted Iona and Isla but what about other island names... Skye, Canna, Eriskay, Soay, Lismore, Tiree might be unusual and nice

PokemonDont · 17/09/2017 01:02

X-post with WhiteHair on place names and Tiree!

What about the Norse names popular in Orkney and Shetland? Ingrid, Inga, Freyja, Frida, Sigrid, Britt, Solveig, Ola, Ragnhild etc.

ItsThisOneThing · 17/09/2017 09:07

Corrie?

CondimentQueen · 17/09/2017 09:32

Thank you for the replies this morning. Definitely not sold on place names. They're too obviously islands, which we do visit.

Ailie is just another spelling of Eilidh so it's a no.

I do like the slightly Nordic sounding names for a boy (love Magnus) but the girls' names sound slightly harsh to my ear.

How about classic names like Marion/Marian/Marianne/Marianna? (getting a bit more Continental the more letters you add.)
Sunniva and Ursula have a nice Norse vibe without sounding harsh.

weebarra · 17/09/2017 10:56

I like Marian too.
Norse names are nice - Astrid?
Cora?

CondimentQueen · 17/09/2017 11:00

Marianne is very pretty. I do know a couple but they go by nicknames. Marianne would lend itself to Marnie, which I do like. One for the list - hurray!

I like Ursula too but it's quite difficult to say with my accent. I can hear it with a lovely Highland lilt whereas I struggle to get my tongue round it. It's the same with the name Carl Grin

DH vetoed Astrid a while ago, which is a shame as I like it.

Cora rhymes with Flora so might avoid that!

Fenella/Fionola

weebarra · 17/09/2017 11:28

I really love Marnie. I've only ever met one and she was lovely.
