Is Bear really that bad?

We would love to call our child Reuben Bear, but have seen some very negative comments! Lots of people seem to be asking!

Is it really that bad? He's 4 weeks old and plan on registering him very soon.

halcyondays · 25/06/2017 17:37

made me think of Rupert bear

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 17:38

Yes. It is that bad.

photographyaddict · 25/06/2017 17:39

Reuben is a gorgeous name! Just not bear I'm afraid!

PurpleDaisies · 25/06/2017 17:39

Yes. Sorry!

It's especially bad now because of Cheryl Cole and Jamie Oliver's bears.

BossWitch · 25/06/2017 17:39

Bad.

originalbiglymavis · 25/06/2017 17:40

Only if you want him to have a lifetime of puns (bear behind, bear naked, being beast, bear behaving badly, feeling grizzly, pooing in the woods, rough as a bears butt, etc) and people asking what his real name is. It's not a name.

EssentialHummus · 25/06/2017 17:40

Reuben Edward? That way there's a "bear" in there somewhere.

Boopboopboop · 25/06/2017 17:41

Bear seems like a twee fad and will probably be outdated in a few years.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 25/06/2017 17:41

It is terrible, really terrible.

Reow · 25/06/2017 17:41

Yes. It's cringey.

YellowGrass · 25/06/2017 17:42

Well @originalbiglymavis no one would ask what his real name is as he's a Reuben!

@EssentialHummus I do like Edward but just really wanted Bear!

Thanks for the replies, I'm a little bit sad now!

Think of him as an adult filling in forms. A suburban-dwelling middle manager, a singlet-wearing truck driver, a teenager stacking shelves at Sainsburys.

"And your middle name?"
"Bear."
"..."Hmm

"Do you, Reuben Bear, take this wo/man..."

And then decide.

originalbiglymavis · 25/06/2017 17:44

Reuben is a people name though. Bear is, well a 🐻. Cute as a nickname until he decided is not cool...

DanyellasDonkey · 25/06/2017 17:46

Have I missed something? Since when was Bear a name? Hmm

flumpybear · 25/06/2017 17:47

Cringe .... let's hope he's never a lawyer or doctor ..... perhaps a zoo keeper instead

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 25/06/2017 17:50

Nicknames don't have to come from your actual name. If you want to call him Bear at home as the cute factor then go with it.
My brother is called Tadhg and we call him Fergal. Hmm

Boredbeforeievenbegan · 25/06/2017 17:50

Danyellasdonkey that's what I thought, it's not a name!

Caulkheadupnorf · 25/06/2017 17:52

Bear Grylls? Although his is short for something, maybe Edward. Some slebs have named their children Bear too

insancerre · 25/06/2017 17:53

Bear is ridiculous
Sorry, but it just is

usernamenonumber · 25/06/2017 17:55

It's stupid.

Would you name a child Walrus? Or Bison? How about Giraffe?

Enidblyton1 · 25/06/2017 17:56

It's only a middle name - of course you can call him Reuben Bear.

YellowGrass · 25/06/2017 17:58

People call their children River, Rain, Autumn, Winter, August, Lily, Violet, etc.? So even if you don't like it, it's silly saying it isn't a name because I guess those can't be either?

WateryTart · 25/06/2017 18:00

It absolutely is that bad. Teachers will laugh at you and kids will tease.

Fairenuff · 25/06/2017 18:02

Yes, awful.

Horrible name.

Please don't do that to your child.

OvO · 25/06/2017 18:03

As a nickname is brilliant. But I would say that as it's my youngest nickname.

Never in a million years would I use it as an official name.
