Is Bear really that bad?

We would love to call our child Reuben Bear, but have seen some very negative comments! Lots of people seem to be asking!

Is it really that bad? He's 4 weeks old and plan on registering him very soon.

OP posts:

Reuben is fine.
Bear is just stupid and a bit unfair. Why make him have to explain this? I wouldn't have per-conceptions about someone named "Bear", but I would have some about his parents.
Edward if you really can't stop from calling him that but don't ACTUALLY put Bear on his birth certificate.

Singingforsanity · 25/06/2017 19:57

Can you use it as a nickname? I know a little boy called Ollie and his family always call him Ollie Bear.

disneykid · 25/06/2017 19:59

@CuntyKitchen yep, Bear Payne 🙄

CuntyKitchen · 25/06/2017 20:01

Holy fuck, what a pair of dicks.

mydogisthebest · 25/06/2017 20:04

Bear is just awful. I disliked it before Cheryl Whatever Her Surname Is This Week called her baby it but now I absolutely hate it.

The only thing I would say is that if you really want to name your child Bear at least as a middle name it would rarely get used.

Personally I can't see the point of middle names. I very very rarely use mine (I don't dislike it). I don't even put it on most forms, only really official ones

Gemini69 · 25/06/2017 20:07

Surely the fact Cheryl Cole has named her baby Bear is enough to put you off forever and a day?

THIS...

reuset · 25/06/2017 20:08

Bear Payne, really?

Unadon · 25/06/2017 20:09

mydogisthebest Middle names do provide a good "alternate" option though. I know a couple of people who go by their MN because they didn't like their first names for whatever reasons. I also know a few people who enjoy putting down their middle initial from time to time (on letterheads for instance). Brings on quite a bit of versatility to a name, IMO.

PosyBear · 25/06/2017 20:12

I think it's a gorgeous name. My son is called George and we call him Georgie Bear.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 25/06/2017 20:18

You seem determined to go ahead, which is a shame, because it's a ridiculous name. One thing to have it as a family nickname; quite another to have it as your official middle name. Don't be that parent.

GingerNutMarmite · 25/06/2017 20:24

I love your name idea, it's lovely. SO much better then many very common names that seem to be socially acceptable.

I wouldn't really care what other people think to be honest.

I highly doubt he'll actually be bullied, people always say that with unusual names. It's a cheap shot.

My sister has unusual names for her children, they've never been bullied. All their friends think that their names are cool.

disneykid · 25/06/2017 20:28

I highly doubt he'll actually be bullied

AlrightHmm

Sophronia · 25/06/2017 20:49

Fine as a nickname, but I wouldn't put it on the birth certificate, even as a middle name.

Jamandbumpsmum · 25/06/2017 21:02

I like it. I will be totally honest. I didnt like the name reuben but i said it every time reading through this post and ive grown to like it. And bear, well it's a second name so what's it matter what people think but I like it too. To be honest anybody who says a name enough will grow used to it wether they like it or not. It's your baby, go with whatever you feel. My dd is called Jamie Leigh. Not a lot of people approved because she would be nicknamed jamie, a boys name but they all call her jamie. And a lot of family also call her jamz or legs, (my brother read the Leigh part as leg when writing it and it stuck) she will answer to any and is a very happy little lass regardless.

Here are some more suggestions

Wildebeest
Mongoose
Baboon
Wombat
Hedgehog

AlletrixLeStrange · 25/06/2017 22:39

I like it!
But my DS is called the most hated name on MN so I wouldn't take my vote into account Grin

jeezlouise85 · 25/06/2017 23:01

Go for it, especially as a middle name! Wouldnt the world be boring if we were all called the same 50 or so names.

KindleBueno · 25/06/2017 23:36

Alletrix - Is it Sebastian? Grin

Buntysoven · 25/06/2017 23:38

Love how mumsnet decrees on one post that middle names don't matter and you can go wild and on another have a fit of the vapours over Bear! Wink

SmallBee · 25/06/2017 23:45

I think Bear is OK as a middle name because hardly anyone uses them anyway.
But I don't like it as a name personally any more than I'd like Hunter, Moose or anything like that. Just personal preference.

Love love Ruben though, almost called DS that.

RhubardGin · 25/06/2017 23:49

It just screams "look how trendy I am" bleh

Reuben is lovely Smile

squoosh · 25/06/2017 23:56

As a middle name it's fine. It is very 2017, very B list celeb approved.

squoosh · 26/06/2017 00:00

Everyone has only started loving this name because it seems normal after Cheryl Cole has done it.

Tbh she is just following the crowd too. She is copying Jamie Oliver. Who was no doubt 'inspired' by Mr Grylls.

MommaGee · 26/06/2017 00:05

Geez some of the hate on here is OTT

Its a middle name Op, maybe add in Nicholas re the Rupert Bear thing but it really isn't going to ruin his life

blahthisistoohard · 26/06/2017 00:50

Yes Bear is absolutely terrible
