Is Bear really that bad?

We would love to call our child Reuben Bear, but have seen some very negative comments! Lots of people seem to be asking!

Is it really that bad? He's 4 weeks old and plan on registering him very soon.

OP posts:

I know! It's an awful assumption to make but I can't help it Blush Like I said, I would never dare say that to someone out loud Blush

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/06/2017 18:40

Yes.

PastysPrincess · 25/06/2017 18:42

Speaking as someone who endured 24 years of an embarrassing name please please please do not call your child bear. I'm lucky enough it was my surname and got rid of it when I got married. I cannot tell you how much easier my life got once I got rid of that stupid name.
BTW Bear Grylls is actually Edward Michael Grylls and bear is a nickname.

FreeNiki · 25/06/2017 18:44

When I hear the name I wonder if it's grizzly bear or bare arse.

It sounds the same as the bare as in bare arse and is slightly ridiculous

gillybeanz · 25/06/2017 18:44

Why do people do this to their dc, is it because they can't think of anything reasonable or are a bit thick or common?
I often wonder why a parent would choose a really daft name.

notarehearsal · 25/06/2017 18:46

I adore the name. Probably my favourite and I'd choose Edward with a shortening of Ted teddy or bear

BuzzKillington · 25/06/2017 18:49

'Bear' is beyond twatty. I would think only halfwits would saddle their poor child with such a non-name, sorry.

Surely the fact Cheryl Cole has named her baby Bear is enough to put you off forever and a day?

Unadon · 25/06/2017 18:52

Isn't Bear a popular slang term used to describe a gay man with a huge physique and ample body hair? Confused

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 25/06/2017 18:53

Where do you live OP?

Muumi3 · 25/06/2017 18:54

Unadon, you are correct.

ScarletSienna · 25/06/2017 18:55

I like it. I know 2 Bears (first name) and no one comments on their names behind their back at all. As a middle name I would definitely use it.

DramaAlpaca · 25/06/2017 19:07

Yes, Bear really is that bad.

disneykid · 25/06/2017 19:21

Please don't do this to your poor baby.

Bear is fucking hideous. People wouldn't call their child 'Penguin'. Everyone has only started loving this name because it seems normal after Cheryl Cole has done it. That should be enough to put you off the name forever!

thethoughtfox · 25/06/2017 19:29

It really sounds like Rupert Bear expect lots of references to tartan trousers

reuset · 25/06/2017 19:31

Do you really need to ask? You're not naming a dolly or a pet, and he won't always be a baby/toddler where it might seem 'cute' Sorry to be blunt, but...

I'm with Kindle. And what's going on here at the moment, Bear and Wolf, and the like, on a few threads Confused

sodablackcurrant · 25/06/2017 19:33

No, leave Bear behind.

reuset · 25/06/2017 19:34

Why do you want to use the name Bear, OP? What appeals about the 'name' exactly?

bridgetreilly · 25/06/2017 19:38

Reuben Bear is a particularly bad combination. I don't like Bear as a name much at all anyway, but that really doesn't work.

But you know, your child, your choice.

villainousbroodmare · 25/06/2017 19:38

Cute nn. Terrible given name. Would assume parent lacking judgement if not rather thick.

gillybeanz · 25/06/2017 19:38

If you have a girl next call her Dolly, if you wouldn't then that gives you your answer.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 25/06/2017 19:50

To add child's perspective, I once knew a 'Teddy' that, at age 11, asked everyone he knew to start calling him Edward as he didn't want to go up to high school with a nickname. Imagine if he didn't like it and didn't have the choice.

And a 'Lottie' who asked to be Charlotte from the same age in.

As a second name, it's (I was going to type 'bearable' then realised the pun) ok. But it's better to give a 'proper' name as if he wants to go by his middle name at some point he has a choice.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 25/06/2017 19:51

Our ds nn is Bear, everyone calls him it and he even answers to it. Frankly I give zero fucks if anyone doesn't like it or looks down their noses at me. Call your son whatever you want, he can always change it when he's older if he wants.

GreekGod · 25/06/2017 19:52

I like Reuben but not Bear.

Namechange2837 · 25/06/2017 19:53

Well it's an animal. That's all I think of.

CuntyKitchen · 25/06/2017 19:54

What is Cheryl Whatserface's child's surname? Not Payne, surely?

Dunno OP, it just seems a bit celebrity bandwagonny.
