Emmanuelle first impressions?

First impressions on Emmanuelle? It's the only girl's name so far that DH & I both like, but the few Emmanuelle's we've known have been French and I'm not confident it works outside French culture? We don't have French heritage btw. Nickname probably Emmy.

My school was called Emmanuel. So it'd be a no from me.

It also sounds a little like Manuel, and I fear I'd channel Basil Fawlty a little too often.

I love it! But then again, I actually come from a country where French is a national language, so, I'm probably not the best person to judge whether this would work in a country with English, presumably?, as the only national language...

It was a series of soft porn films in the 70s but most people younger than, say, mid to late 40s probably won't make that connection

Makes me think of churches (church in my home town called Emmanuel - not going to hear the difference when spoken) and religion in general. But I guess I'd like the 'old' sound of the name so not really a negative impression for me.
