DH wants to use the name Chelsea. Tack galore?

Our daughter's first name will be Athena. I want Helen (my Mum's name), as her middle name. I highly dislike multiple middle names and so does DH.

He is set on having Chelsea as the middle name. He would've had it as a first name if I agreed.

Chelsea is his football club. Chelsea is where DD will be born.

AIBU to say it's tack galore? Do you think it's tacky? She'll be born in Chelsea and her Father is Chelsea. I cannot get passed it being terribly tacky and distasteful.

Sad

Chelsea is tacky yet Athena isn't?!

Helen is nice, Chelsea is ok, Athena is a poster shop. Or a stripper.

KarmaKit · 17/04/2017 14:04

Or Diane? Athena Diane is really nice IMO. I think it's not so much the number of syllables as where the emphasis is placed. Athena Helen doesn't sound right but Athena Diane is nice.

No way to Chelsea, especially since its after a football club. Tacky, and doesn't go.

DayGlo · 17/04/2017 14:04

Athena is beautiful and classy to my ear. Greek Goddess.

Nobody under 40 remembers the poster shop Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 17/04/2017 14:05

I have no idea about the poster shop, but Athena doesn't sound remotely stripperish to me. It's a Classical Greek name.

NameChange30 · 17/04/2017 14:05

What poster shop?!

FWIW I think Athena and Helen are both lovely names and they work well together.

Sophronia · 17/04/2017 14:06

Athena Helen is lovely. I would try to avoid using Chelsea.

intravenouscoffee · 17/04/2017 14:08

I knew a girl whose middle name was Cantona (as in Eric). So it could be worse....

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 17/04/2017 14:20

I love Athena Helene.

Did you change his surname to his? (Is your DD getting his name?)

In this case the middle name should imo be your choice/from your side of the family.

Your mother's name, your maiden name etc....

Not a fan of Chelsea. Especially not if used for these reason. Football? Shock

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 17/04/2017 14:21

And also Athena Helen. Oops ;)

Dolly80 · 17/04/2017 14:26

I'm under 40 and remember the poster shop Grin

Athena will be a hit on mumsnet, it ticks the classical, unique boxes. It doesn't do it for me but you obviously love it. Does your husband like it?

I don't find Chelsea that tacky, the football reference doesn't bother me either. At least it's a well known girls name, could have been much worse!

But...you seem to hate it so just tell your husband it's a no. I'd be surprised if he could convince you and it doesn't match as a middle name for Athena anyway.

CancellyMcChequeface · 17/04/2017 14:29

I don't see the problem with Chelsea as a middle name. It's not quite to my taste, but it's not awful, and it isn't as if she'll have to explain the football club connection to anyone who hears it.

(I've encountered a Chelsie and a Chelsee, though, so I'm giving your DH points for spelling at least...)

I like both Athena and Helen, but Athena Helen seems a bit of a mythology overload to me.

annandale · 17/04/2017 14:34

Blue?

Athena Blue or Athena Helen Blue or Helen Blue are all quite cool IMO.

KarmaKit · 17/04/2017 14:43

There's all sorts of names that have also been shops, it's hardly the same as outright calling a baby after a famous, currrent football team.

Did everyone hear about baby Lanesra in Australia? Husband suggested it, wife thought it sounded beautiful and exotic, found out after she was registered that it'should Arsenal backwards, hence husband suggesting it. Awful.

SumAndSubstance · 17/04/2017 15:42

Chelsea is horrific, but the football connection is just the icing on the tacky cake.
I'm under 40 and remember the poster shop, but I thought of the Greek goddess first Wink

MadameDePomPom · 17/04/2017 15:49

I don't see what all the fuss is about really. Certainly not worth getting yourself in a tizzy over.

Hotpinkangel19 · 17/04/2017 16:04

Athena isn't classy or timeless either?

Littlepond · 17/04/2017 16:06

I think it's fine as a middle name.

Rockaby · 17/04/2017 17:22

Athena Blythe
Athena Hope
Athena Maude
Athena Maeve
Athena Faye

Rockaby · 17/04/2017 17:23

Also, I'm 33 and remember the poster shop! It doesn't hugely put me off the name though, which I think is nice.

JaeDon · 17/04/2017 17:35

Athena Helen is lovely, but if you wanted to use your mother's name but make it more suited then you could possibly use Athena Diane which I think sounds nice.

NameChange30 · 17/04/2017 17:37

Eh? Her mother's name is Helen, not Diane!

GuinessPunch · 17/04/2017 17:38

Chelsea is better than athena.

TroysMammy · 17/04/2017 17:40

I think Athena Helene sounds better. Chelsea, no way. I'd always be thinking bun.

MadameDePomPom · 17/04/2017 17:43

Who doesn't like a nice bun?

CuppaTeaTeddy · 17/04/2017 17:44

Chelsea is awful.
