DH wants to use the name Chelsea. Tack galore?

Our daughter's first name will be Athena. I want Helen (my Mum's name), as her middle name. I highly dislike multiple middle names and so does DH.

He is set on having Chelsea as the middle name. He would've had it as a first name if I agreed.

Chelsea is his football club. Chelsea is where DD will be born.

AIBU to say it's tack galore? Do you think it's tacky? She'll be born in Chelsea and her Father is Chelsea. I cannot get passed it being terribly tacky and distasteful.

Sad

it's like calling your child Waitrose Clapham North!!

It's really not. The shop Athena went out of business, what? 20 years ago? It's hardly going to be something that all this baby's peers will instantly think of.

SuperBeagle · 18/04/2017 07:34

I don't think Chelsea is any tackier than Athena.

DeanaPiana · 18/04/2017 07:37

Super Why? Athena is a classic Greek name

Chelsea is tacky, but Athena is bloody awful. Quite pretentious.

SuperBeagle · 18/04/2017 07:51

It might be, but I still think it's tacky. The connection is so obvious that it's just aspirational. A bit like naming your child Aphrodite or Zeus.

deluxetrolley · 18/04/2017 08:06

I'm a Chelsea fan and had a secret desire to name DD Chelsea but just couldn't bring myself to do it, even as a middle name sadly. It still disappoints me, and I've thought of it again for DD2 middle name but there's just no way I could do it!
You'd probably have a similar opinion on Blue, but I also considered that as a middle name, maybe that could be another suggestion to your DH?!

deluxetrolley · 18/04/2017 08:10

Oo another one with a Chelsea connection is Zola, though am guessing you may not like that either :)

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 18/04/2017 08:59

The rhythm of Athena Helen seems clunky to me - it doesn't roll off the tongue, and the repeated sounds seem odd too. I would consider saving Helen for another DD as a first name - a pair of sisters called Athena and Helen would work beautifully.

You do seem very cross and irked about the whole thing: your language and word choice are all very negative on this thread. Naming your child should be a shared and joyful thing. So I would say a flat no to your DH on Chelsea and work together to find a name you both love.

Having said which, I think that Athena needs a monosyllabic name to follow, with no shared sounds, and right now Blue is a pretty cool name. It could make your DH v happy and I think works well linguistically. And you preserve Helen Diana for the second DD, which is a lovely name.

Joinourclub · 18/04/2017 09:40

What about Elsie instead of Chelsea?!

GinIsIn · 18/04/2017 10:49

Elsie/Chelsea? Depends if people have seen Cabaret or not..... (Elsie from Chelsea was a prostitute - there's a song about it!)

sycamore54321 · 18/04/2017 11:20

There was a thread a while ago debating whether die-hard football fans who let their obsession impact on real life were childish or not. I would hate to be named after my father's multibillion-pound hobby.

As a completely non-football person, I would presume the name was inspired by Chelsea Clinton as the most well-known bearer.

Athena Helen or Athena Diane sound a bit too Greek to me, but at least you have a family reason.

Floellabella · 18/04/2017 13:03

Athena Helen is a beautiful and classic name, which has personal meaning and a family connection, which is lovely and important. Your DH clearly wants a middle name with meaning, and you are vetoing Chelsea, so hopefully he can recognise Helen is the best choice. If he likes Athena and the child will have his surname personally I think he's up to his quota of having a say!

Ktown · 18/04/2017 13:05

I like Athena but have Greek heritage so it sounds normal.
Chelsea is a bit rubbish. I wouldn't call my kid Vauxhall or Queen's Park either.

CuppaTeaTeddy · 18/04/2017 13:13

I know someone called Trafford. It's just as bad.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 18/04/2017 14:09

Hmm, tricky, Athena Chelsea does sound better than
Athena Blue
Athena Terry Lampard or
Athena Drogba Osgood.

DeanaPiana · 18/04/2017 17:25

Well preserving names isn't a thing for me as I'm only having one DC! Grin

I quite like...

Athena Drew (my uncle's name is Andrew and brother is Matthew so nice little connection).

Does it sound okay? Or does it tell a story, if you know what I mean.. As if Athena drew a picture of insert surname

I really like Athena Helena Drew or Athena Helena Blue...

It sounds really lovely imo (but I think that may really depend on one's accent, tbh).

FunkinEll · 18/04/2017 20:46

I much prefer Athena with a shorter middle like blue or drew. I think the connection is nice too.

Athena Helen just doesn't sound right together. Too long and I think the middle name would be better without an N in it.

YouBloodyWhat · 18/04/2017 20:52

Great idea OP. With me and my OH both supporting different teams, it was a toss up for our DD between Arsenal and Norwich. In the end we chose to honour his late dad's favourite team, so she's named Portsmouth.

DeanaPiana · 18/04/2017 21:30

YouBloodyWhat erm, you bloody what?

I think Athena Helen is an absolutely lovely name OP, can't believe the pasting you're getting here! Unusual but two classic names. I do also love Diana however.

DeanaPiana · 18/04/2017 21:54

Thank you eyes Flowers

OP posts:
Rockaby · 18/04/2017 21:57

How about Athena Nell? Then you're sort of using Helen but not iyswim.

DeanaPiana · 18/04/2017 22:50

So we've finally decided...

It's going to be Athena Kate

Thoughts?? Grin

KoalaDownUnder · 19/04/2017 03:42

Athena Kate is lovely.

Not gonna lie, though - I really loved the Greek vibe of Athena Helen, and I'm a big fan of using grandparents' names for middle. (Assuming you like them, of course - the names & the grandparents!) Wink
