DH wants to use the name Chelsea. Tack galore?

Our daughter's first name will be Athena. I want Helen (my Mum's name), as her middle name. I highly dislike multiple middle names and so does DH.

He is set on having Chelsea as the middle name. He would've had it as a first name if I agreed.

Chelsea is his football club. Chelsea is where DD will be born.

AIBU to say it's tack galore? Do you think it's tacky? She'll be born in Chelsea and her Father is Chelsea. I cannot get passed it being terribly tacky and distasteful.

Sad

Shouldn't it be Athene?
Chelsea just doesn't go.
But Athene Blue would be OK (I assume they play in blue)

JaeDon · 17/04/2017 17:53

oops, I meant grandmother (it had been mentioned earlier and I'd gotten grandmother / mother mixed up)

DeanaPiana · 17/04/2017 17:55

I don't see what all the fuss is about really. Certainly not worth getting yourself in a tizzy over

Er, because I really dislike the name?

newt that's a completely separate name.

Athena Blue is funny, as in 'Blue is the colour', a popular Chelsea chant.

Love Athena Maude but doubt DH would agree to it Angry

I have Chelsea as my middle name. It was supposed to be my first but my mother put her foot down so it's my 1st middle name and my 2nd middle name is my grandmother. Yes I'm glad they put it 2nd and actually usually laugh when telling people what it is.

summerfling · 17/04/2017 17:57

Woah woah!! Let's all slow down & think about this before we judge.....Chelsea isn't such a bad name!

It's definitely not tacky!

LettuceMash · 17/04/2017 17:58

Athena London

WheresTheEvidence · 17/04/2017 17:59

Oh and my parents aren't chavs

llhj · 17/04/2017 18:00

I think it's ok, not my choice but it's quite fun having a novel middle name. I think it goes well with Athena too. If you chose Athena, then I guess he gets a say somewhere?

summerfling · 17/04/2017 18:02

I much prefer Chelsea over Athena.

Chelsea is not chavvy, nor is it tacky.

Probably best to scrap both names to be fair & start again.

MadameDePomPom · 17/04/2017 18:02

'Er, because I really dislike the name'

Er, then discuss it with your husband. We have no say in what the kid will be called. But I must add, seeing as it's been mentioned, that Maude is 1000 x worse than Chelsea.

summerfling · 17/04/2017 18:04

Oh & fwiw, I would NOT use Helen in my child's name....it would suit her when she's much older but not young & it's boring.

SumAndSubstance · 17/04/2017 18:04

newt that's a completely separate name

Well, not really. Athene and Athena are both Ancient Greek names for the goddess generally known in Latin as Minerva. Each is more prevalent in different dialects, but perfectly valid. Unless you were planning on naming her after the poster shop, in which case you're right: Athena is what you need Wink

Smartiepants79 · 17/04/2017 18:04

I dislike Chelsea for all the reasons already given but if it was that important to the father of my child I would possibly allow it as a middle name.

There needs to be compromise.
Quite like the blue connection and think it flows well.

nonameinspiration · 17/04/2017 18:05

Athena Helen is great - both Ancient Greek I think they work well.

Chelsea is bad enough but because of football??? Urgh

DeanaPiana · 17/04/2017 18:08

The poster shop isn't relevant anymore. I'm a 90's baby and don't really know what it is, I only know vividly from much older friends. Since my child will be born so much later than I was, I doubt their generation will clock on either.

Think we're back to the drawing board for a middle name.

WheresTheEvidence · 17/04/2017 18:08

Oh and I'd see athena as pretentious. Unless you are posh or Greek I wouldn't use it.

DeanaPiana · 17/04/2017 18:10

I've already compromised by taking his name at marriage and the baby having his surname too.

We both agreed on Athena, therefore he can let me decide on a middle name that he likes too.

Obviously, I wasn't being serious about the poster shop. You are going to look a bit daft though if you name her Athena and don't know enough about it to be aware that Athene is basically the same name...

MadMags · 17/04/2017 18:13

Athena is so try hard and pretentious to me!

DeanaPiana · 17/04/2017 18:14

Sum you weren't the only one to mention it. I wasn't referring to your comment in particular.

Athene is very similar, I'm well aware but it isn't the exact same name.

OP posts:
DeanaPiana · 17/04/2017 18:16

MadMags I suppose it is indeed but only if you have no connections to the origins. It's extremely popular in the Greek community.

OP posts:
newtlover · 17/04/2017 18:16

....because if eg I was her teacher, I would assume 'Athene'- you will have a lifetime of correcting people!

DeanaPiana · 17/04/2017 18:20

newt Athene is pronounced A-thee-nee where as Athena is A-thee-na

OP posts:
Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 17/04/2017 18:21

Athena Eden (Hazard)
Athena (Gianfranco) Zola
Athena Kensington (and Chelsea)
Athena Cheyne (Walk)
Athena Sloane (Square)

MadMags · 17/04/2017 18:23

So you're Greek?

That's much better!

Also, I wouldn't assume you meant Athene at all! Surely everyone knows the name Athena?
