Murphy for a girls name?
We really like it would like to know what other people think

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LunaLoveg00d · 21/09/2016 16:45

NO! It's a surname, not a given name and definitely not a name for a child.

I know at least two dogs called Murphy though.

Giratina · 21/09/2016 16:46

Wouldn't be great for a boy, absolutely awful for a girl.

AmeliaJack · 21/09/2016 16:49

I know two Murphys- both boys. The nick name is "Murf" in both cases.

I don't think I'd have liked to be a Murf personally. So no, I wouldn't use it for a girl.

Cococrumble · 21/09/2016 16:49

Sorry, I also know a dog named Murphy..

shumway · 21/09/2016 16:49

I like it.

WaitrosePigeon · 21/09/2016 16:50

MissPattie · 21/09/2016 16:50

Awful

PotteringAlong · 21/09/2016 16:51

Nope. It's a surname.

Tiggeryoubastard · 21/09/2016 16:52

I know a cat called Murphy but really it's the name of a dead 'ard dig with scars and missing teeth. Don't really believe anyone would call a girl that.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 21/09/2016 16:53

I was thinking it was quite cute until you said 'for a girl'

goingfortwo · 21/09/2016 16:59

we also like Hector for a boy

OP posts:
chinlo · 21/09/2016 16:59

My best friend had a dog called Murphy.

chinlo · 21/09/2016 17:00

Hector is a lot better than Murphy - assuming you are talking about a boy!

Vixxfacee · 21/09/2016 17:05

There's a film with a girl called Murphy in it. The one where the dad goes to space and at the end he's behind the book shelves or something.
No it's not a good name.

Loyly · 21/09/2016 17:06

Murphy for a girl is just awful, OP. I don't like it, sorry. But Hector for a boy is excellent.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 21/09/2016 17:09

I met an adorable little pup named Murphy once. It's not a name for a human though and certainly not a little girl. IMHO

Interstellar. What a great film. (p.s. spoiler alert!)

Americans sure do love giving girls surname names.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 21/09/2016 17:11

Terrible. Just terrible. It's a surname or a drink.

therootoftheroot · 21/09/2016 17:14

oh god these poor children Sad

i feel desperately sorry for so many of the poor babies i read about on here wit these awful, desperately awful nmaes.
who looks a beautiful newborn baby girl and thinks 'let's call her murphy?'

or at a cute little boy and think 'hector is just right'

there are thousands of beautiful names to choose from >why is there a fashion for ugly ones?

chinlo · 21/09/2016 17:15

Because beauty is subjective.

I feel desperately sorry for you.

EasternDailyStress · 21/09/2016 17:18

I came on to say it's a dog's name. My opinion is that it's horrible for any human. But then I don't like surnames as first names generally.

Nooooooooooooo.

It's that awful, it's an Irish name but no Irish person would ever call their child that - especially their girl child - thing.

Because it's a surname.

Honestly it'd be like someone calling their kid Jones or Jeeves.

But sure if you like it, go for it. Grin
