It's slang for potato in Ireland. YYY Nellyphants.

This is because Murphys are as common as potatoes.

Elephantsaremygods · 22/09/2016 06:15

Both Hector and Murphy are awful.

PunkrockerGirl · 22/09/2016 06:15

Sounds like something you'd call your pet donkey, tbh.
Is this a wind up, OP? Hmm

lizzieoak · 22/09/2016 06:52

A friend of mine has a lovely young adult son named Hector. I am pro-Hector. I did know a cat named Murphy. A giant orange moggy, possessed of great charm. But still a cat. And a boy cat at that. It is a nice sound, I just can't get past it being a last name (& fine in its role as last name).

goingfortwo · 22/09/2016 07:21

Thank you all for you opinions Smile yes both names are genuine options that's we are thinking about, we love Murphy for a girl it's unique and there definitely won't be more than one in her class at school! Thank you to the (I think I counted) 3 that said they liked it! As for the people that pointed out she would probably be shorten down to Murf or even Smurf we had considered that and we probably would call her either of those as a little nickname whilst she is little, we are from Kent so I doubt she will be called spud, plus our nephews nickname is spud and his actual name is Oliver!

As for everyone that kept saying it's a dogs name so are Jack or Rex or Harry even Philip and these are all very popular names at the moment! (Yes I know a few baby boys named Philip!)

As for Hector and I love that got a lot of positive reaction, we think it's a sweet name and we feel both names go well with surprises older brother Henry. Thank you Grin

JassyRadlett · 22/09/2016 07:29

Well, you won't be dissuaded OP so I guess you weren't actually that interested in what other people think. Grin

So I guess you'd better hope your daughter is a 1950s American gumshoe detective played by a Humphrey Bogart type.

LunaLoveg00d · 22/09/2016 07:51

Murhpy is not unique. It is unusual. Unique means something which is one of a kind, the one and only. In order to get a "unique" name you'd have to go for something like Kdngngnurihnjfgnfhshd, pronounced "John".

Love the way these threads go:

OP: What does everyone think of the name dkfjaer09tuegjidfgijt?
Everyone else NO!!!!
OP: Well I like it and am using it, so there.
Everyone else: What's the point of this thread then??

Elephantsaremygods · 22/09/2016 07:52

Jack or Rex or Harry even Philip

Who the fuck would call their dog Philip Confused

Pemba · 22/09/2016 08:47

No. Ridiculous.

goingfortwo · 22/09/2016 08:54

The point was to see people's honest opinion our mind was made up but we wanted to see what people really thought! everyone that said something negative would never say it to a parents face!

PartiallyStars · 22/09/2016 08:59

I also am not keen on Murphy for a girl, but it's interesting that no-one likes Murphy but presumably Sophie is fine - is So intrinsically a better sound than Mur? Or is it the fact it is a surname (as are many names now thought of as "first names" like Stuart)?

Stilldreamingofsun · 22/09/2016 08:59

It's your baby! Ignore what anyone thinks- if I meet another blooming Isla or Ava or Amelia, I might just scream from boredom!! You definitely can't be accused of being boring 😂 Rory was never considered a girls name but now people think it's really cute. The same will happen with your daughter. People will associate the name with her and not a dog. I have two dogs called George and Oscar for goodness sake and have never confused them with humans 😂😂

GoNorthDarren · 22/09/2016 09:47

I'm with stilldreaming. Beauty is indeed subjective, (thankfully). I don't happen to find names like Amelia, Ava-Mae or Evelyn particularly beautiful, but I don't "feel desperately sorry" for girls who have those names. That just happens to be their parents' taste.

I might feel a little bit sorry for someone if they were one of 5 in their primary school class and have to be called 'Amelia J' all the time, but that's just bad luck really.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 22/09/2016 11:27

Hector is very cool. Nothing wrong with that.

But Murphy? For a girl? Really awful. As in r-e-a-l-l-y. Some surnames lend themselves well as first names. Murphy does not. I'd do a double take if I was introduced to a baby girl called Murphy and hope I'd manage to hide my 'who'd give their daughter such a hideous name' face.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/09/2016 11:35

As an Irish person I'd find it very strange to meet a baby girl called Murphy. It's the most common Irish surname there is but I've never come across it as a first name. Like calling a girl Smith.

On the up side if she ever goes to Ireland she'll be able to have photo taken outside a lot of pubs called Murphy's.

chinlo · 22/09/2016 11:53

The point was to see people's honest opinion our mind was made up but we wanted to see what people really thought! everyone that said something negative would never say it to a parents face!

True. And it shouldn't really matter to you what other people think.

You do have to take into account whether other kids at school will say it to HER face, though.

lizzieoak · 22/09/2016 16:42

Phillip is a dog's name? Not quite with you there. Ditto Jack & Harry. Rex does seem to lean more towards canines. Point about it being a "dog's name" is that it is more often used for a dog than a human. Some are maybe evenly weighted, Tom is a person name & a cat name.

Sometimes we ask a question because we're not sure of our own mind. That may be the case here, in which case seeing all the "no!"'s has strengthened your resolve.

Fwiw, I've never understood the attraction of the unique name thing. "My name is Mary, it's spelled Mare-eeee" - what's the point. A name that is not often used does not make you an unusual or better or kinder person. Not having a dig, I just don't understand the point? There's so many less-used names that people won't dislike, why go for one you know that either people dislike or can't spell (talking to you, parents of Mare-eee named children).

FinallyARainbow · 22/09/2016 16:46

Please don't - our dog is called Murphy/Murph. It's not great for a child.

Ponyboycurtis · 22/09/2016 16:48

Its my Mums maiden name - I like it.

GoNorthDarren · 22/09/2016 16:54

I kind of agree that a name doesn't have to be 'unique' or unusual to be beautiful, but I wouldn't like to use some of the names most commonly used myself if I could help it. Mainly because I don't like a lot of them. I won't list them, but the ones I don't like tend to fall into these categories; 'cute, cheeky chappy' names (for boys) and 'cute, pretty, girly' names (for girls). Again I don't "feel desperately sorry" for children with those names though. It's just their parents' taste.

PotteringAlong · 22/09/2016 17:03

You're right, I wouldn't say it to your face. But I would pull a face about it in private.

Ontopofthesunset · 22/09/2016 17:03

I know beauty is subjective but Murphy has so many not-beautiful associations.

It's the name of so many stereotypical Irish working men in dramas or jokes - the thickset grizzled guy in the pub called by his surname. And it looks so stolid and heavy as a word. And it's a really, really common surname as well as being used to mean potato. And Murphy's Law is that anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

It isn't unique. It's very common. It's just very common as a surname.

It is however marginally better than Murfee which is truly hideous.

spankhurst · 22/09/2016 17:08

Apart from being a surname, it completely lacks elegance. Little Murphy will be a grown woman one day with a clunky boys name.

MaudGonneMad · 22/09/2016 17:31

Nobody's mentioned Murphy Brown?! I loved that show as a kid.

SoupDragon · 22/09/2016 17:43

It is a truly awful name. Why on earth would you do that to your child??

we love Murphy for a girl it's unique and there definitely won't be more than one in her class at school!

That's because it's a crap name for a girl. Not that a name has to be pretty' but this is really ugly sounding. As is "Murf" for a nickname.
