The ONS data will be released later than usual this year, on 2 September.

Any predictions? Big rises or falls?

I think they'd be mad to do that. Caleb and Kaleb whilst basically different spellings of the same name they are vastly different.

SerenDippitee · 18/08/2016 22:26

Jane I'd be interested to know if they are. The woman who runs the British baby names blog does it every year, just unofficially, as cited upthread. She is quite open about what a nightmare it can be, however - Alicia and Alesha are homophones in some pronunciations, for example, so should they be grouped?

I doubt they'll group it because they're just downloading it from a database, not manipulating it

NotMe321 · 01/09/2016 11:26

Bound to be Charlotte.

MadrigalElectromotive · 01/09/2016 11:34

I think the number 1s will be Isla and George. I've heard those names everywhere lately.

It will be interesting to see where Dd's name is.

Spindelina · 01/09/2016 11:40

Re grouping different spellings:

DD's name is transliterated from Hindi. There are two common transliterations, one with an 'ee' and one with an 'i' (both pronounced "ee"). So you would want to combine them, presumably.

The 'i' spelling is also an alternative spelling for another name (where the 'i' is pronounced "eye"). So how do you know which of the 'i' names are my DD's name, and which are this other name? And do you now lump that other name (which has several variant spellings) in with my DD's name? It's really hard to see where to stop.

One thing that I think would be easy is to stop at the hyphen, and count all the Lily-May, Lily-Grace, Lily-Edna etc along with Lily.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 01/09/2016 11:47

Can anyone tell my why EDward/Ted/Teddy is rising?

squoosh · 01/09/2016 11:50

Now that spelling variants are combined, top boy's name will be Mohammed.

The Daily Mail will have a conniption.

squoosh · 01/09/2016 11:53

I've wondered that myself Idliketobeabutterfly. So many Teddys about but I'm not sure where the trend has come from? It's a good example of naming contagion.

What do you think the collective noun for a group of Teddys should be? A picnic of Teddys?

HowLongTillTippingPoint · 01/09/2016 11:55

Penny will go up for sure. Know 2 already.

OrdinaryGirl · 01/09/2016 11:55

Is anyone else anxiously scanning this thread in the hope their DC's name WON'T be on it? 😏

Idliketobeabutterfly · 01/09/2016 11:56

I only have one, he's a solo bear

Housemum · 01/09/2016 12:01

I have an Amélie - it was lounging around the 80s in the list when we named her and has been steadily rising.

myshinynewusername · 01/09/2016 12:03

Sophia/Sofia is massive where I am.

Also Violet and Lily.

For boys its just more of the same from previous years around here.

StaceyMummyof3 · 01/09/2016 12:22

My eldest is Lily..definitely popular now..should be near top..my Son is Charlie which should still be in top 10..my youngest is Ivy..only know 1 other Ivy..my hubby predicted it would become more popular when we were picking names

bookworm14 · 01/09/2016 12:25

Isla, Freya, Lily and Max will still be popular. The Isla fad has lasted for ages. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was number 1 based on how many I know!

I hope my DD's name, Sophie, drops out of the top 10.

StaceyMummyof3 · 01/09/2016 12:36

If our 3rd was a boy ..would have been Austin...
I don't like Lily with a hyphenated double barrel name yuk.. Lily on its own ☺

PeekabooISeeYou · 01/09/2016 12:39

I am OrdinaryGirl

My daughters name wasn't in the top 100 in 2014 when we picked it. She was born in 2015, but don't know any other babies/children with her name so hoping it still doesn't appear in the top 100. We picked it because it's a lovely name but I like the fact she's not going to have 5 other girls in her class with the same name too.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 01/09/2016 12:44

LOl I'd love my sons name to drop out of top 100 and our surname.

squoosh · 01/09/2016 12:46

I wonder if Elsa will have had a massive bounce as a result of Frozen.

KeyserSophie · 01/09/2016 13:39

Luca. Every other boy is called Luca. It's got to be top 10.

splendide · 01/09/2016 13:40

So many of these were on my shortlist. It's funny how influenced people (me!) are without realising it. If DS had been a girl (born 2015) he'd have been a Martha. I thought that was quite unusual! I didn't know any small children really till I had him.

mrschatty · 01/09/2016 13:43

Amongst my social group I know many of the popular names. My dd name will be in top 10 I expect

KeyserSophie · 01/09/2016 13:43

My theory on Austin is that it was completely "killed off" by Austin Powers and has now started to come back as people forget about that. I can't be bothered to download years worth of data to prove it though Grin

sodabreadjam · 01/09/2016 13:59

I just heard yesterday of a baby girl called Freya - but to be spelled Freyja, which is the old Norse spelling.

Seems like the worst of both worlds - having a very popular name but a lifetime of having to explain the unusual spelling to other people.
