Dd named calais and wondered if anyone had heard it before/opinions (good or bad) on it.
I'd never heard it as a name until oh mentioned it but I love it now

Callie FAR better and sound the same. Why would you want to name your child after a rather grim French port? Callie however pretty and unusual. Could be short for Calliope (Greek mythological muse of poetry).

Never heard it as a name....not saying it's bad, but it does conjure up images of asylum seekers at the french port to me. Would Callie be an alternative option?

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2016 13:25

Erm, I think OP is saying she has already called her DD Calais.

Sorry OP, but me too. Callie works though Smile

Sangatte is prettier.

Timetogrowup2016 · 08/04/2016 13:29

I wanted callie but oh didn't like it so calais was a compromise.

I like it time it's unusual but not really crazy iyswim

titchy · 08/04/2016 13:33

Callie would have been the compromise. He DIDNT compromise - you did!

Oh well bit late now. Why did you post?

PatMullins · 08/04/2016 13:34

That's what I'm wondering, titchy
If your DD is already named this then what do our opinions count for?

gymboywalton · 08/04/2016 13:36

it's dreadful

are you going to call your next child dover?

if your child is already called it then why does anyone elses opinion matter?

Timetogrowup2016 · 08/04/2016 13:37

I also asked if anyone had heard of a baby girl called it before.
Just wondered how unusual/unheard of it is

I've never come across a Calais before, but there are plenty of Brittanys and Parises around, so why not?
I know a Nice too. And a Lyon. Well, his mum says it like that...

Timetogrowup2016 · 08/04/2016 13:37

This place is a funny place.
Read the title question it says why I posted

Vixxfacee · 08/04/2016 13:38

Never heard of it it but I really like it.

PatMullins · 08/04/2016 13:38

Not a baby, no.
Port, yes.

Twowrongsdontmakearight · 08/04/2016 13:38

Also wondering why post when the decision has already been made.

Timetogrowup2016 · 08/04/2016 13:39

It says why I posted.

Never heard of it just makes me imagine a massive ferry.

MrsDallowaySaid · 08/04/2016 13:40

I teach a Calais. This may out me. I may have to name change now, haha. Not my preference, but she seems to have coped with it!

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 08/04/2016 13:41

No I haven't heard of anyone called Calais because it's not a name

Floggingmolly · 08/04/2016 13:42

How old s your child, op? Confused

Genx77 · 08/04/2016 13:42

To answer the OP, no I've never heard of a child named Calais. When I hear the name all I think of is the misery of thousands of people living under tarpaulin, chikdren playing in mud and hunger.
HTH
Do people really do so little research before saddling a child for life with a name?!

Timetogrowup2016 · 08/04/2016 13:43

8 weeks and before you ask flogging I've said why I posted
