Calais used to be the murder capital of France. Which is nice. Right up there with Marseille.

The Cal in Calais is not pronounced like "Callie".

PaulAnkaTheDog · 11/04/2016 16:38

Some of the comments on this thread are just awful Hmm

zippey · 11/04/2016 23:47

I like the name.

pippistrelle · 12/04/2016 16:16

The Cal in Calais is not pronounced like "Callie".

What's the difference in pronunciation please?

MamaLazarou · 12/04/2016 17:58

Yes, do tell: I have only ever heard it pronounced 'Kalay'.

glasg0wmum · 12/04/2016 22:31

I really, really hope that baby Calais has a middle name like Jane or Louise that she an use when she's older.

I have never come across a baby Calais because as someone else said, it's a place not a child's name. Haven't come across a Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon or Maaclesfield either.

zeeka · 13/04/2016 23:01

hildur yes, it is.

There are plenty of names which are names of places (and vice versa) and they are perfectly valid options.

Are names of colours any more acceptable? Names based on nouns in foreign languages are ok? Flowers? Gemstones? The negative posts seem to suggest that the options given are based on facts and logic, but this is simply not the case (stop being so horrible!)

whamfan · 13/04/2016 23:23

This is uncomfortable reading. OP I'm sorry people are so nasty. Yes, they are entitled to an opinion but there are ways to word things so as not to be so god damn hurtful!!!

You're baby is lovely OP Flowers

Kittykatmacbill · 15/04/2016 08:51

I am not sure why you have asked after you have named your (beautiful) baby. Hmm. But seeing you have, I would assume for a baby not this year that it is a (very) political act. I would as various other pp have suggested consider changing it before she is one, callie is nice rather than Dunkirk or Aleppo, if it isn't a political statement. And I am not sure a child's name is the best place for a political statement. Sorry but you did ask!

Only1scoop · 15/04/2016 08:56

Calais

Grim port of a name if this is genuine....certainly not an area of beauty....

Much prefer 'Cherbourg' Grin

Can't wait to hear 'Calais' shouted out in the crisp aisle.

GrinAndTonic · 15/04/2016 09:07

There is a child at my friends DC school named Calais.
His brother is called Holden.
Holden Calais is a car in Australia.....

Also hoping OP ignores weird negativity being thrown around on here. They all probably have very boring names and are jealous.

(Calais currently has a lot of refugees. So do loads of other places. Give it a rest. There is a lot of hope and kindness in that place alongside suffering).

Burgatroyd · 16/04/2016 07:55

I suspect you are unsure hence asking about the name.

Its a nice sounding word.

If you are unsure you can change name. I did before baby was 1. Good luck

BurnItDown · 19/05/2016 14:58

You might as well call her Blackpool

boogie1234 · 19/05/2016 18:16

LOL

this fucking thread

muhDD · 19/05/2016 21:38

If your next is a boy you should call him Dover.

MintCakeYum · 19/05/2016 22:31

It sounds a bit like 'Kelly' said in a strong Essex accent

Pipilangstrumpf · 20/05/2016 13:29

Did the op ask for opinions on the name? NO

But she asked whether we've met one. No, I haven't.

1horatio · 20/05/2016 16:55

It makes me think of refugees and a few historic battles...
It doesn't sound bad. But I don't associate it with anything particularly positive either.
I personally prefer Calla, Callie, Cleo, Clover or Clea...

1horatio · 20/05/2016 16:59

And no, I've never met anybody named Calais.

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/05/2016 17:01

Are you my dentist?

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/05/2016 17:01

Oops, posted too soon.

Because if you're not a dentist then I know someone else with a baby girl called Calais.
