Dd named calais and wondered if anyone had heard it before/opinions (good or bad) on it.
I'd never heard it as a name until oh mentioned it but I love it now

Good job the name Ira for a boy never took off in the UK!

Cerseirys · 08/04/2016 18:42

India has been used as a name for at least 100 years. Brooklyn only took off because of the Beckhams and nobody thinks it's a particularly classy name!

SmallBee · 08/04/2016 18:43

Flogging - I'm not saying that's my opinion!

Floggingmolly · 08/04/2016 18:46

I'm glad you can see the idiocy of it, SmallBee, my poor uncle Adolf wishes his parents could have too Wink

BitchPeas · 08/04/2016 18:47

Do you not care about the refugee crisis happening in Calais at the moment affecting the way people view your daughters name? It's an awful situation.

A few people have asked and you seem to be ignoring the point.

kelda · 08/04/2016 19:12

I know a child called Isis, at least it is a real name that has been around since the times of the goddess.

I did believe you OP, and I don't think many people will bat an eyelid because of the assortment of names that are around now.

Frazzled2207 · 08/04/2016 19:24

Op. Congrats on a beautiful baby.

I think it's ok to name a baby after a town, especially a nice one (eg Sienna) but very odd to name after a grim town which is in the news for the wrong reasons.

HildurOdegard · 08/04/2016 19:24

It's going to depend a lot on how you pronounce it - the English or the French way.

About 8 years ago I worked with a German man named adolf who was born approx ten year after WWII - maybe his parents thought nobody would remember either.

SoupDragon · 08/04/2016 19:29

I don't think many people will bat an eyelid because of the assortment of names that are around now.

Going by this thread, I doubt that is true.

Frazzled2207 · 08/04/2016 19:29

What's the english way? Everyone calls it "callay" surely

BertrandRussell · 08/04/2016 19:30

What's the English pronounciation of Calais?

Palomb · 08/04/2016 19:31

i don't actually believe there is a child called Calais Confused

BertrandRussell · 08/04/2016 19:32

13 since 1996.

Palomb · 08/04/2016 19:36

Bloody hell.

How many in the last 4 years?

RortyCrankle · 08/04/2016 19:38

It's not a name and is bloody awful but good news! You have time to change it to something that won't make your child cringe as she is growing up.

Palomb · 08/04/2016 19:44

It really is a dreadfully cruel thing to name a child the way things are at the moment. Do you not watch the news op? Have you ever been though Calais? It is a proper dump and that's without the burning tyres or the migrants trying to get in your boot. We've spent an extra £800 on ferry crossing for our holiday just so we don't have to go near he place.

Is it still within the time limit to change the name?

BertrandRussell · 08/04/2016 19:46

4 in 2008 and none since then. Very odd. I wonder which celebrity had a Calais in 2008.

Frazzled2207 · 08/04/2016 19:46

Brilliant news if it's not too late to change your mind

MissusWrex · 08/04/2016 19:47

Fuck sorry I really didn't think it could be real!

I've been there, it's grim as hell and I'd imagine pretty much everyone who's seen it or lived in the UK/France for the last few years will only associate it with extremely negative things.

And there have been 13 since 1996?!

Erm...on the plus side not too late to change it...

NorbertDentressangle · 08/04/2016 19:54

How bizarre.

About 10 mins ago on facebook I was scrolling through a friends friend list and noticed a young woman (maybe 18-23 years old) called Calais.

Thought to myself "that's unusual, I've never heard of Calais as a name before" and then come on here and see this thread.

I've only skimmed through the thread but can't see why the OP is getting such a hard time, unless I've missed something Hmm

allegretto · 08/04/2016 19:56

Actually as far as unusual names go, I think it's not too bad. Don't let anyone put you off. OP.

mrsschu · 08/04/2016 20:27

In answer to your questions:
No I don't know anyone called Calais. And it is an awful name. Even leaving the refugee crisis aside, Calais is a grim place and doesn't sound good as a name. IMO Paris, India, Brooklyn, Camden etc are all awful "names".

I'm sorry if my and other peoples' responses seem harsh but you did ask for opinions on the name. I'm not sure it's the best idea to ask what people think when you've already named your DD.

wallywobbles · 08/04/2016 20:39

Callie yes. So yes. As you wouldn't know the difference unless you saw it written. Let's hope that by the time she's older it'll have a different image.

CandyFlossBrain · 08/04/2016 20:55

I'm sorry for my comment earlier OP. Tbh, I did think perhaps the thread was in jest, but now I know it's not and I'm sorry if our comments have hurt you. As long as you and your Dp are happy with your choice, sod the lot of us! Smile
