Dd named calais and wondered if anyone had heard it before/opinions (good or bad) on it.
I'd never heard it as a name until oh mentioned it but I love it now

Fifa read the question? How rude is that? You can relax, op, the name is probably unique. Because no one else would even imagine it was a name.

Timetogrowup2016 · 08/04/2016 13:44

Obviously they do do little research hehe
Each to their own

But you know the answer - it's very bloody unusual obviously, given its association with such an awful place Confused

Branleuse · 08/04/2016 13:46

Its actually quite a pretty name. Its a shame its so well known for being quite a grim place. Do you have connections to the area?

Sunbeam18 · 08/04/2016 13:50

It's a pretty word, but a strange choice for a baby born this year for sure

BirthdayBetty · 08/04/2016 13:52

I'm sure your dd will be thrilled to be named after a port Hmm

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 08/04/2016 13:55

Oh, you've already used if. Fair enough OP, as long as you like it that's all that matters really. Hopefully by the time she understands her name the migrant crisis will be over and her name won't make people think of actual Calais.

ImperialBlether · 08/04/2016 13:58

No I haven't heard of anyone called Calais because it's not a name

This is what I always want to say on threads like this.

Does Calais have a special significance to you, OP? Was your daughter conceived on the ferry?

RiverTam · 08/04/2016 14:00

No, because it's not a name, it's a grim French port currently home to a huge refugee city. Why on earth anyone would want to name their child after it I can't think.

BertrandRussell · 08/04/2016 14:04

13 since 1996.

You asked for opinions, OP, which is a bit daft considering a) you've already chosen it and b) you don't actually want opinions!

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 08/04/2016 14:06

Calla would have been much better (like the lily)
Calais is just so odd! It's not a pretty place and it's actually a pretty sad and horrible association with all the refugees and homeless children Hmm

florascotianew · 08/04/2016 14:07

If it matters

Calais (the place) is named after a celtic tribe that lived there around 2000 years ago - the Caleti.

In Ancient Greek myths, Calais was the son of the North Wind

Today, as others have said, it is a place of suffering and tragedy

maybebabybee · 08/04/2016 14:08

It's pretty horrible criticising op's name choice when her DD has already been named. Her OP makes it clear that's the case.

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 08/04/2016 14:08

She asked
And people will be thinking it - maybe it's better she knows this now

BettyBi0 · 08/04/2016 14:10

I have a distant relative with the name and tbh I did snigger a little when I was first told. They are in the US though so I don't think they have the same UK associations with refugee crisis etc

Archfarchnad · 08/04/2016 14:10

I have not heard of anyone called Calais because it is a French port, not a girl's name. And I live in a country where you can't just call your child whatever you want because you think it's yooneek, you have to use a recognised name (a human name, not the name of a geographical feature). I'm rapidly coming round to the idea that this rule should be introduced in the UK too.

florascotianew · 08/04/2016 14:11

I was not criticising, simply offering some information. Paris was named after a Celtic tribe, too, and also - by coincidence - is a male character in Greek mythology.

PatMullins · 08/04/2016 14:14

So "opinions good or bad" translates as "only good opinions"?

Jw35 · 08/04/2016 14:16

Not heard it used on a child. Heard other place names but not Calais. I think it's a truly awful name

CandyFlossBrain · 08/04/2016 14:19

Well, the actual Calais is bloody grim, and I'm amazed that anyone would choose it as name inspiration (but at least two people have apparently.) But as a name it's not ugly... Just don't ever take her to France on holiday! Imagine a chic French family introducing themselves 'This is Antoine, and Jean-Michelle, and our little daughter Grimsby!'

florascotianew · 08/04/2016 14:30

Agree with PatMullins that the OP did ask for bad opinions as well as good. And anyway, it is surely a matter of fact, rather than opinion, that most people in the UK will associate Calais with the current refugee tragedy. Looking further back, the city has rather a sad and violent history. In particular, it saw terrible fighting and destruction in World War II and a very nasty medieval siege. Those facts would not recommend Calais to me as a name.

ImperialBlether · 08/04/2016 14:39

Are you in France, Arch?

allegretto · 08/04/2016 16:29

No, and I don't know anyone called Ben Dover or Cher-Bourg either. Grin

Timetogrowup2016 · 08/04/2016 16:43

Town in France.
Not a port.
Hehe.
No seriously I don't mind the bad opinions. It's all taken on the chin. Each to their ownI know one other calais spelt callay but pronounced the same
