Did you not do is names when pregnant OP? That's what's unusual about your situation. Many couples disagree on names but it's rarely fought out in those precious first days of parenthood.

Undercooked · 29/03/2016 10:14

For "do is" read "discuss"!

Carolndaryl · 29/03/2016 10:18

Is he actually really insecure about being a dad and this insistence on being the one to name 'his son' is how it's all coming out? Sounds ridiculous, but you said something earlier about how he thinks you're 'better off' having been the one to carry him and so he should get his choice of name. Like otherwise baby will be more yours than his?

If so, maybe lay off the name discussions for a bit, and play up what a good dad he is, how well he's bonding, how much baby looks like him, is relaxed with him etc etc. Let him channel it all into cuddles (and nappy changes!).

Then maybe start gently speaking to your gorgeous boy using your choice of name in a way that includes your DH too. Fwiw I think Reuben nickname Rubio sounds like the compromise you've been most excited about. So in a quiet moment when you're all three cuddled up, crooning to baby 'what do you say Reuben, little Rubio, our gorgeous wee boy' and so on...

Good luck!

GreenLounger · 29/03/2016 10:21

Thanks all for the advice! I'll take it all on board Thanks

Ps I also think nicknames can vary between the everyday name and a pet name for family use only...

PresidentCJCregg · 29/03/2016 10:29

He is TOO gorgeous and snuggly to be a Dre/Rubio. Rubio FFS.

Your husband is being a giant cock.

I hope you find a lovely name soon. Enjoy your tiny boy. Flowers

Go hardball now and say whoever picks the first name, baby has the other person's surname.

Oh, and both dads' names as middle names, so that evens that up too.

bekindtome · 29/03/2016 11:57

What about the name Eben. It must be so hard to have such different baby name ideas.

Princecharlesfirstwife · 29/03/2016 12:03

Actually, Victor is a great name. As is George. Tell him you'll put those 2 in a hat and pick one out - Victor George or George Victor.

Haffdonga · 29/03/2016 13:38

Greenlounger congratulations. Your ds is absolutely beautiful.

I guess you are at a pretty vulnerable time just at the moment so I don't want to husband bash. I'm sure your dh is a very nice guy (with appalling taste in made up names). However, he's getting two things quite wrong at the moment.

  1. Your baby ds is not more important than you. He is equally important as you and as your dh. Don't let your needs and wishes be pushed down the priority order. (And this does not mean your dh's wishes for ds trump yours.)
  2. You are appearing to bend over backwards to compromise with your dh and find names that fit both your tastes. You have made many suggestions that meet his ridiculous demands to the extent you are even prepared to go for a name you don't like but could 'live with.' Your dh has made absolutely no move to compromise by an iota. His rejection of Reuben/Reubio which you both like sounds like he's attempting to control rather than share parenting.

I'd suggest leaving the name issue for a few days. There is much heightened emotion on all sides and will be for a week or two yet. Any name chosen right now will be seen as a victory or loss for someone. You don't need to register ds for 6 weeks so try out Reuben or one of the others you like in private and enjoy your lovely baby for a while.

SpidersFromMars · 29/03/2016 14:10

Could DP come around to George as first name, for his Dad?

SpidersFromMars · 29/03/2016 14:13

Lewis/Louis?

snorepatrol · 29/03/2016 14:33

How about a name that can be shortened to a name that is more in keeping with your DH's list but is more fitting for your list full length...I'm thinking names like

Maximus / Maximillion - Max
Arthur - Art
Alexander - Xander

that type of thing?

temporarilyjerry · 29/03/2016 14:37

So he gets to choose the first name, one of the middle names (George) and the surname?

I suggest that you call HIM Rubio and give DS a proper name.

mogloveseggs · 29/03/2016 14:46

Leo? I know it's similar to Lee but you could spin it as you wanted to partly name him after his daddy but not get confused when shouting for one of them Easter Grin. Congratulations by the way he is gorgeous!

DingleberryFinn · 29/03/2016 16:40

Rubio will not fare well in the playground.

Unless your DH is happy with his son being called "Pube B.O.", I'd swerve it.

GreenLounger · 29/03/2016 16:40

Thanks all, everything has calmed down today x

Pick the name you actually love and really want. As if you were the only parent. Start calling the baby this. When he complains, tell him you don't want your baby to feel his parents couldn't agree so are using this name until you can both find a name you love, not nice for baby just to be called he/him/baby/it...Wink.

GreenLounger · 29/03/2016 17:10

I think my favourite is Benjamin or Daniel? I don't know though! I like them all Smile but I think I'll try that Grin I'd be happy with George Victor, George is quite nice, but I know 6, all under 10!!!

You know, I think Victor is great, and not over-used.
And you could suggest:

Conrad
Rex
Vincent
Melvin
Milton
Byron
Shelley
any other Romantic poet or vague contemporary you like- Coleridge? Wordsworth?

I like the surnames as first names thing, but the name has to sound like a Victorian Northern railway magnate rather than a Californian who does toothpaste adverts. So I liked Willoughby, and also names like Redfern, St. John, Esmond, McLeod, Llewellyn, and Maxwell.

Or be inspired by Brazilian footballers ?
Anderson
Ronaldo
Romario
Zico
Thiago
Luiz
Aldair
Gilberto

Of course, if you want to name him after a man of the moment, call him Donald...

I'm being daft now, but so should you be. You've got a lovely sweet new baby and time to decide, so have some fun with it!

Wordsaremything · 29/03/2016 17:53

Phoenix Grin

GreenLounger · 29/03/2016 18:52

I dunno if I'll feel weird calling him my dad's name - not that he'd agree anyway! Angry

Thanks all Thanks

He's a super baby... Not particularly fussy, so far anyway!

MIL has been around Envy "what has my boy chosen for this little guy then" ugh Angry still relatively calm though.

Here's a piccy! Wink
