Wanted: girls name. Must be fabulous.

Why am I pregnant again ffs? Stupid Catholic upbringing. My body will an unsalvageable wreck and we will be living in penury for the next two decades.

Anyway. Need a girls name. I am utterly devoid of inspiration, being interested only in grab bags of Skips and having naps.

Already have an Agnes and an Enid. Surname Stephens.

Dislike: frilliness; 'ah' endings; 'classic' names.

Like: fabulous names. I was keen on Ramona the last go-round, but think I might have lost my love for it.

Any suggestions?

I feel like there's an argument going on around me but am ignoring it.SmileSmile

Am dying to see OP's list and to know if Lesbia is on said list.

neddle · 25/05/2015 22:26

I haven't rtft because 13!!! pages, so I've no idea if these have already been posted or you've chosen already.

Robyn, Zerren, Tamsyn - pretty awesome non cutesy names imo.

reuset · 25/05/2015 22:29

fact of the matter is is that any Catholic is more than entitled to be less than reverential towards the religion they were brought up in.I suggest you learn how to deal with it as your prim outrage will wear you out.

You're just being disingenuous now, mitzy. Now I'm prim and reverential am I

I said earlier, and more than once since, as you well know: Questioning, criticism, challenging, making jokes, all fine. Pedalling inaccurate, outmoded, sexist stereotypes as 'joke' not so much

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/05/2015 22:29

calzone why did your grandparents not plump for Lesbia in the end?

Your mum seriously had a luckier escape than the Count of Monte Cristo.

MaureenMacnally · 25/05/2015 22:29

neddle - no to those, but in weirdly same vein, DP has just suggested Corinne. (Pronounced Korin, not Coh-reen).

I like it. I am adding it to The List.

The Zwei Mitz-ei. I like it. Grin

MaureenMacnally · 25/05/2015 22:31

Calzone, Lesbia is actually really nice. But a tough name to wear in the playground, I grant you.

I once though someone called Corinne was called Colin. That was awkward.

But it is a nice(ish) name.

calzone · 25/05/2015 22:32

Sadly, someone pointed out to Granny what a lesbian was and she was so mortified she called Mum......Anne. GrinGrinGrin

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/05/2015 22:33

I bet she bloody loves being called Anne when she thinks about what might have been........

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/05/2015 22:33

Some people could start an argument in an empty room!

Ursula? Dervla? Derval?

MaureenMacnally · 25/05/2015 22:35

I love Anne! But already have an Agnes so too close, boo.

Nerys? Nyree?

MaureenMacnally · 25/05/2015 22:38

Gasp - No. Just no. To all of them. Grin Grin

The only thing that offends me about this thread is the fact it's full of some of the ugliest names I've ever heard. I honestly thought it was a wind up at first but ah well, we can't all like the same thing.

serin · 25/05/2015 22:40

Buryan

(Pronounced Bree-Ann) after the good Cornish saint.

Personally I love Magda!

Marcipex · 25/05/2015 22:42

Gundreda

Not soft, not flowery!

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/05/2015 22:45

Selma

MitziKinsky · 25/05/2015 22:45

Hazel

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/05/2015 22:46

Lesbia has reminded me that Gaye used to be quite a popular girl's name in the Enid/Agnes era.

OutsSelf · 25/05/2015 22:50

I sort of hope our Vidas are one and the same. She had me for lunch last week, it wasn't pretty. I dread to think of another one sonewhere duplicating that on some other well meaning but under prepared sap Sad

SylvaniansAtEase · 25/05/2015 22:54

Honestly, I think you have it with Vera!

  • you like it
  • it fits with your other DD names: bit spiky, not to everyone's taste (!) short, snappy, not frilly, unusual (but you're just a bit ahead of the curve)
  • good short form like the others (Ag, Mo and Vee!)

It's perfect. Valerie also almost as good for similar reasons. Vita excellent, but more user friendly (bit North London, surely??!) and not so cool as Vera...

Corinne will be pronounced Cor-een by EVERYONE. I know a Coryn though, and know of someone else with Coryn on the shortlist alongside Taryn, Thea, Talia... don't know if that indicates that Coryn is suddenly going to shoot up in popularity!

OutsSelf · 25/05/2015 22:54

Vita is like Rita being said by someone fabulously foreign

calzone · 25/05/2015 22:55

Enid, Agnes and Gaye.

Enid, Agnes and Vera

Enid, Agnes and Doris.

I love Doris. Or Beryl. Or Clara.
