What girls names do you hear all the time?

Just that really. I have a shortlist but would rather not go for anything that's overly popular. So instead of me telling you the names, could you say what names you hear a lot?! Smile

If I hear of a girl being called a very much used name like Ella or Sophie, ten-a-penny I could guess her siblings names too within about three guesses.

People that choose current favourites seem to do so for all of their kids.

GatoradeMeBitch · 22/04/2015 23:17

Evie, Emilia, Ella, Ava, Amelia, Lily, Olivia.

But I only know one Jezebel Grin

TheNewStatesman · 23/04/2015 04:42

About 20 years from now we are going to have a glut of couples called "Olivia and Oliver"....scary!

As others have said, most the names currently fashionable now are not particularly classic and would have been rare 20 years ago. A true classic name for me is something like Lucy, Laura or Catherine.

AndHarry · 23/04/2015 08:52

Oh, and lots of little ones called Chloe, Phoebe and Holly.

burgatroyd · 23/04/2015 08:55

And Tabitha too! Know quite a few!

deadwitchproject · 23/04/2015 09:29

Olivia - lots
Ellie/Ella, Milly/Amelia, /Eva/Ava

Gosh, aren't people rude?! Liking a popular name makes you unimaginative or says you have 'failed' your child because that child won't be identifiable in class? (erm, I think it's pretty unimaginative not to be able to identify a person with the same name as somebody else. Nicknames, middle names, surnames - it's really not hard!). How funny to make such unimaginative judgments about people based on the names they chose for their children, and then call those people unimaginative.

Children grow into the names you give them. The most out-there names will seem normal on your child once you're used to it. I have never ever met anybody with my name. I like unusual names, and I like my name. My children, however, have names that I would consider classic - one of them is super-fashionable right now and has appeared on this list a few times, and the other is in the top 40 but hasn't appeared on this list at all. They are classic in the sense that they are old names - there have been people with those names in the UK for at least a thousand years, though they have gone in and out of fashion as most names do. And those more 'normal' names seem totally unique on both of my children. They have grown into them and made them their own.

All this agonising over popular or not popular is so often fuelled by lazy snobbery and prejudice. It doesn't matter why you like a name. If it's unusual or common as much, it won't matter, because it will be your child's name and your child will make it as beautiful as it can be.

swancourt · 23/04/2015 09:35

common as muck

shitebag · 23/04/2015 09:46

Isla, Olivia, Teigan and Ellie are all very popular here in NE Scotland.

Tbh though names go in and out of fashion all the time so I wouldn't worry too much about whether you hear it all the time or not, if you like a name go for it.

My sons name is very common in our area and other than him having his surname initial added to his first name in school its never been a problem.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 23/04/2015 09:51

Isabel/Isabella etc
Amelia
Sophie/Sophia
Jessica

Fuckup · 23/04/2015 09:52

Here we have lots of Chloes, Sophias, and Maisies. I love these names though but there are a few of them about.

ScorpioMermaid · 23/04/2015 10:02

Sophia, Olivia, Ruby, lily, Evie

I have a Millie, she's nearly 7 and is genuinely the only one I know she's Even the only one in her school. I purposely chose all of my children's names as they weren't popular, don't get me wrong they're not out there names there aren't droves of them at school. I had a boy around around 6 weeks after Prince George was born, l love his name but went against it for my son thinking it would be the top name. The registra said she had hardly had any George's come through, people were obviously thinking the same thing. He's an Oliver.. (And there will probably be loads of them at school too.. Oh well.. 7/8 ain't bad!)

ScorpioMermaid · 23/04/2015 10:06

And Ellie.. Forgot that one. (We're in the East Midlands)

ems1910 · 23/04/2015 10:08

I'm in Plymouth. Hear a lot of Lily, Summer, Lacey and Poppy. All followed by May/Mae/Mai

Bobian123 · 23/04/2015 11:44

Thanks everyone. A name I do like (today at least!) is Alexa. I haven't heard of lots of them....

afink · 23/04/2015 12:30

There are a billion and one Lexies, but less Alexas. I think it's very common in the US at the moment, but slightly less so over here.

Bobian123 · 23/04/2015 12:45

swan that's a nice post-I think you're right, really. The name you choose will be beautiful regardless because it's for your own child.

Only1scoop · 23/04/2015 12:52

Nice choice Op

swancourt · 23/04/2015 15:24

I didn't mean to sound cross in that post, by the way! Just read it back and it's a bit more aggressive than i meant it - how you put it is just what I meant, bobian :)

KERALA1 · 23/04/2015 15:37

Ooh alexa is fab. Great choice! I don't know any.

Keep your hair on swan we are entitled to our (anonymous) opinions I am super polite when introduced to yet another baby eve. Yet I reserve the right to think popular names are dull and unimaginative. And yes I have one myself.

countrybump · 23/04/2015 15:44

I don't know any Amelias!

Isabelle/bella/issy/izzy is very popular here though, and there are a few Evies. Does it matter how popular a name is if you like it though?!

swancourt · 23/04/2015 22:18

You need to decide on a name you love regardless of popularity!!

GatoradeMeBitch · 23/04/2015 23:14

I'd just like to say, I don't dislike any of the girls names I hear repeatedly these days, they're all very pretty. And I doubt any of them will date as badly as some of the names I and my peers had inflicted on us in the 70s!
