What girls names do you hear all the time?

Just that really. I have a shortlist but would rather not go for anything that's overly popular. So instead of me telling you the names, could you say what names you hear a lot?! Smile

You should only avoid a "popular" name if it's really going to bother you! You can't know now if it will bother your unborn baby... I have a fairly common late 70's/early 80's name, there were 3 of us amongst 100 girls in my school and it never once (in my life) bothered me. In fact I'd much rather have a fairly usual name than one that's very "different". Any name can date quickly, whether it's popular or not. The only thing I would try to avoid personally are names that are only popular right now but haven't been before, Isla is probably one for me (although I know it's been popular in Scotland for a long time so I'm talking about elsewhere). But names like Sophie, Olivia, Lily have been used lots for a long time eg. I know Sophies and Olivias who are in the 20's and 30's and I know two grandmothers who are Lily. Choose what you like and what you feel will suit your child.

Didn't actually answer your question specifically OP but you get what I mean Grin

CandyAppleFudge · 22/04/2015 09:07

Grace
Amelia
Lilly
Sophie
Sophia
Rose/Rosie

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 22/04/2015 09:17

Lilly-Mae. Amelia, Emily, Eva, Ava, Freya, Isobel/a, Evie, Isla.

tumbletumble · 22/04/2015 09:51

My DD has a relatively popular name - it's been mentioned 8 times (I think) in this thread, so not as many as some! There is one other girl in her class with the same name. We knew it was popular when we chose it, but it's my grandmother's name and DH and I both love it. It doesn't bother us really (or DD afaik).

My advice is to give her a middle name which you'd be happy for her to use as a first name. My brother has used his middle name ever since he was in primary school and one of four James's in his class!

NerrSnerr · 22/04/2015 09:54

Ava, Evie, Myla, Amelia, Grace.

My 7 month old daughter has a royal name so i guess I'll find out soon if it's going to get popular.

GlitterTwinkleToes · 22/04/2015 09:58

I called my DD Sophia, no-one I knew was called that, my family didn't know anyone called that yet it seems to very popular.
Nursery and school is going to be lots of fun!

FishCanFly · 22/04/2015 10:16

Amy and Becky

AngelsWithSilverWings · 22/04/2015 10:18

In my daughter's y2 class the names apart from my DD are:

Bella 2
Isabella 2
Ella 1
Sophia 3
Ava 2
Emma 2
Lilly 2

I've always thought it odd to have so many girls in one class with similar names. And so many ending in a.

In the reception class I help in the only two girls with the same name are called Poppy.

SunnyBaudelaire · 22/04/2015 10:19

Lily, Millie, Tilly, Ellie, Chloe, Sophie

Only1scoop · 22/04/2015 10:22

Amelia
Olivia
Evie
Sophie

charlyn · 22/04/2015 10:37

Millie, Lily, Tilly, Lila, Sophie/a, Isabelle/a, Ava, Esme, Freya, Isla

afink · 22/04/2015 10:47

I am thoroughly bored of Eva, Evie and Ava. They are everywhere! It's exactly like calling your daughter Sarah or Claire in the late 70s/early 80s. Same for Amelia, Isabel and Olivia.

afink · 22/04/2015 10:48

Incidentally, how pretty does the name Claire seem now it's unpopular for children?

Murphy29 · 22/04/2015 10:48

Emily (4 born in last year), Isla, Isabel/la, Eva, Ava, Sophia

Murphy29 · 22/04/2015 10:50

Oh and Olivia, it's probably second most popular here to Emily.

Yet to meet an Amelie though.

KERALA1 · 22/04/2015 12:23

But why do we all gravitate towards the same names?! When I was first pregnant with pfb 8 years ago I immediate favoured Olivia and Emily before thankfully realising everyone else felt the same and I got a little more imaginative.

Am often complimented on my dds names fwiw.

I speak as someone with a dull name whilst my sister got a brilliant one.

glittertits · 22/04/2015 12:30

Has anyone mentioned Ruby? Fecking Rubies everywhere!

Also sibsets of Poppy and Lily or Lily and Ruby are common.

SunnyBaudelaire · 22/04/2015 12:34

" how pretty does the name Claire seem now it's unpopular for children? "

not 'pretty' perhaps but honestly a lot more durable and stylish than TIlly Millie and Lily

KERALA1 · 22/04/2015 12:47

Claire, Mary and Tess sound gorgeous and refreshing after the legions of eves, Amelia's, Sophie's and the millie Molly crowd. There are so many great names out there it's not a choice between Amelia and moonunit.

Bluestocking · 22/04/2015 13:13

I really like Claire/Clare. It has a nice sound, a nice meaning and I have to say I don't think I've ever met a nasty one!

Pantone363 · 22/04/2015 13:20

FB friend had her DD yesterday and called her.....Amanda

Was pleasantly surprised it wasn't another Ava/Evie/Milly/Tilly/Lilly

squoosh · 22/04/2015 13:21

Popular names are popular for a reason - they're great names.

Popular names are popular because they're currently in fashion. The popular names 30 years from now will be completely different.

burgatroyd · 22/04/2015 13:23

Agree with Kerela. Please think hard about why you like a name. It might be because its very popular.

So many great names why would you choose such a popular one?

Other than to honour a relative can we really not think outside the box?

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 22/04/2015 13:23

I guess I tend to like classic girls names-

In the nicest possible way, you don't like classic names. You like fashionable names. There is nothing wrong with that. It's no more of a problem than liking a fashionable pair of jeans. But Amelia was considered an odd and fusty name when my mid-30s friend of that name was a child. She was teased. It isn't a classic name, it's a name that was out of fashion for a long time and has now come back. Just like Claire and Natasha will probably come back eventually.

There are actually very few classic names. Especially for girls. Maybe things like Elizabeth. Most of the rest are very cyclical.
