What girls names do you hear all the time?

Just that really. I have a shortlist but would rather not go for anything that's overly popular. So instead of me telling you the names, could you say what names you hear a lot?! Smile

I have an Isabella and a Lily.

Isabella was named just before it became ridiculously popular so isn't one of many in her peer group.

Lily has 1 other Lily in her class, so again not too bad given how popular the name is now.

Doesn't really bother me that they are popular names although dc4 has a probably unique name in contrast!

MissyMistress402 · 21/04/2015 22:34

Didn't realise how popular it was becoming when I named my daughter. It does bother me a little but she so suits her name. Think Amelia Jane :P

mrsmeerkat · 21/04/2015 22:34

Ava, Ava, Ava ... So many Ava's

Ella
Lily

badRoly · 21/04/2015 22:37

I also agree with the pp that there are regional trends.

I can only think of one Amelia despite having 4dc all at school and running a Brownie pack - unless they're all under 5!

KERALA1 · 21/04/2015 22:38

Seventies equivalents in my opinion

Eve = Claire
Amelia = sarah
Isabel/la = Joanne / Jo

Every group of women my age (40 ish) has at least one person with one of these names baffles me why people would continue to choose their modern equivalents in such high numbers.

Once attended a tutorial with 6 people 4 of whom had my name - and my mother thought she was being original!

"Popular names are popular for a reason" - unimaginative people.

You are doing the right thing, OP, by stepping back and looking at the wider picture here. There are literally thousands of names to choose from: no need for people to keep repeating the same handful.

dontmesswithmytutu · 22/04/2015 01:07

Freya Chloe Ellie round these parts

PeppermintCrayon · 22/04/2015 02:13

Ava. i know about six of them?

PeppermintCrayon · 22/04/2015 02:14

Freya is my fave name. Gutted people may think I chose it because it's popular if I ever have a DD when I've loved it for 20-odd years.

turdfairynomore · 22/04/2015 02:42

I teach 4 year old and have just got my class list for next year. Two Annabelles. Two Freyas. Two Katies. A Siena and a Sienna. A Yasmin and a Jasmine!

Florrieboo · 22/04/2015 04:29

Where I am all Isobel, Isabel, Isabelle type variants are very very popular, as are Sophie and Sophia, and Charlotte.

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 22/04/2015 04:39

It really doesn't matter. We named our DD a name that didn't feature in the top 800 charts 14 years ago. And now it's listed here numerous times as over popular.

Everyone likes to think they're unique, but the reality is there will be a reason a name strikes a chord with you. Whether it's a book you read, a favourite actor from a gazillion years ago or a favourite relative, loads of other people, from the same generation, will have had the same thought.

So, just choose a name you like!

stopitcaroline · 22/04/2015 04:59

I'm in the states:

Isabella
Ava
Emma
Lily
Olivia

and the newest trend among young religious couples is to name girls Ada. I know 4 who were recently born.

stopitcaroline · 22/04/2015 05:00

Crap, how could I forget Sophia, Amelia, and Charlotte. Sophia is by far the most popular.

burgatroyd · 22/04/2015 05:01

'There's a reason a name strikes a chord with you'. I'd be weary of that reason as you are probably following a trend.

I followed two trends. Flower names and El names. Their names are rare but familiar. I wouldn't want to share my name with others in my class neither do I want my name to be so rare i stick out like a sore thumb.

Strong original names that are worth thinking about in the style of Amelia:

Bianca
Saskia
Anoushka
Julianna
Camilia
Camilla
Tamara
Melody

Bobian123 · 22/04/2015 06:21

Thanks v much everyone for your input! I guess I tend to like classic girls names-and they do tend to be popular for obvious reasons. So I just have to work out whether it bothers me enough...

Variants of Evie/Ava/eve. Also lily, milly etc.

Oh and mariam!

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 22/04/2015 08:15

Mariam?! I've never heard of it!

seaoflove · 22/04/2015 09:02

Mariam (or Maryam) is an Islamic name Smile
