Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

George
Milly
Tilly

This thread is hilarious Grin. My name's been mentioned loads (I love it btw), and my DD is Alice. Actually really odd to read so many, I assume, adults writing things like "I hate Alice"!. I, obviously, love the name and DD is absolutely gorgeous, so yah boo sucks! DS's name's also been mentioned and both my DNs! Funny thread, just about masquerading under the irrational theme. Just.

I once read a book in which some kids started up a club with the acronym ISAAC, and I've hated the name Isaac ever since. No idea why, because I didn't particularly hate the book Confused.

A name that makes me cringe is Melvin.

LovelyWeatherForDucks · 28/10/2014 19:31

Annabelle and Amelia - not sure why, doesn't sound nice to me, too weak and nothing-ish despite looking so pretty!
Isaac - I like the IDEA of this name but never comes out right IRL (I-sack? I-Zak? I-Zuk?)
Fleur - again, feels weird to say it! Burgh?!
Joshua - It's the 'SHU-AH' on the end that never feels right! Jo-Shua? Josh-ua? Josh is OK!
William - Again, don't like the sound of it, but like the idea of it!

SpannersInTheToolbox · 28/10/2014 21:13

Amelia. I fucking hate it, horrible whiny sound, Ahh-meeel-lia. My lovely niece is called it but shortened to Millie which doesn't sound quite so bad.

CruCru · 28/10/2014 22:50

Emily - prissy and passive aggressive.
Charlie / Alfie

looki · 29/10/2014 00:01

Beatrice - I can't get my head around the popularity of this name. I think its really ugly and it conjures up an image of a middle aged drab frumpy woman when I hear it.

Freya - wet wet wet

Lauren - reminds me of a wannabe reality star even though I know a lovely little Lauren.

Natalie and Natasha - I have no idea why I dislike these names so much. I just do.

Jackie/Jacqui - its so masculine and bulky.

Penelope - can't get the image of The Good Life out of my head and I find it cumbersome to look at.

EllieElla/Ellen - I really can't stand this but it may be because I knew a terrible Ellen.

Charlotte/Sharon - I dislike the beginning of these names although the literary connection with Charlotte appeals to me, I can't get past how drippy the name sounds to my ears.

TheNewStatesman · 29/10/2014 00:05

Like others here, I can't stand the name Chloe. It sounds sticky and smug.

Cutesy-poo nicknamey names like Ellie/Millie/Tillie/Poppy/Alfie/Albie/Bertie. I am sorry, but some of these names are not going to date or age well.

SoonToBeSix · 29/10/2014 00:12

Freya it makes me think of cheese.

ChickenMe · 29/10/2014 08:53

Always hated: Ruth, Hannah, Lee, Katherine/Kathleen.
Also: Tyler/Riley/Tyrone/Tyson/Ryan and Jayden and co, Kyle, Alfie..Always these names are screeched by mum in a most unappealing way.
Dislike Irish names used where the person has no Irish heritage.
Trend for anything -Mae is boring.

ChickenMe · 29/10/2014 08:56

@ Spanners I agree about Amelia. How did it get so popular?!? I always saw it as a morose, whiny sort of name. If you're born in the 70s I think it was actually rather UNpopular in the 80s?

CookieB · 29/10/2014 08:59

Cheryl pronounced with a ch instead of the sh. Makes me cringe Confused.

MiddletonPink · 29/10/2014 09:01

Yy to Amelia.
I know someone with a Manc accent with a dd called Amelia. She also has a very loud voice.

AMEELIOH.

Marcipex · 29/10/2014 09:07

YY to Amelia. And it's so popular. A mystery.

Also Hannah. It looks like a cough. A really hacking cough.

Cuppachaplz · 29/10/2014 12:36

Lucy
Well it's fine while they are little, but no Lucy should ever be older than 10
totally irrational, but I can't take adult Lucys seriously, and would want my child to one day pass 10

verelab · 29/10/2014 13:36

I don't mind Amelia actually. And the (increasingly used) Mila I really like.

But a few more that I dislike (as before for no particular reason) have sprung to mind since starting this thread:

Christine (to my ears an ugly sound)
Rex (too harsh sounding, shame because it could otherwise be quite cool, with great meaning etc)
Natasha (like pp above)
And for some reason Matthew. No idea why
All better than Anna though!

MadeInChorley · 29/10/2014 13:43

Louise - Loo and Wheeze together. Always detested it. And the name of my DF's wife, who is not exactly my favourite person, so now it's completely rubbish in my view. Sorry if there are lots of Louise MNeters

MadeInChorley · 29/10/2014 14:54

And how could I forget the name Bernardette.

Bernard is possibly the most awful boys name in the first place, and adding "ette" to the end to feminise it makes it all but intolerable. It's soooo stodgy and ugly and depressing - it is a name given to fallen women who are enslaved by nuns. And the only nickname would be Bernie... Which is just utterly dreadful in every respect.

rosdearg · 29/10/2014 15:02

MadeInChorley - every single word of that is gold-studded, nun-endorsed truth. When I was expecting dd1 I had a dream that dp and I argued about the name Bernadette, which he was determined to give her, and woke up sobbing.

When / where I was at school, 12% of the girls were called Bernadette, and the remaining 88% took it as their confirmation name. A sickening hegemony of sheet-laundering Bernie-dom

cruikshank · 29/10/2014 15:06

It always makes me think of crying statues.

coastergirl · 29/10/2014 15:11

Really "trendy", made-up sounding names. They just bug me, I can't help but pull a stupid face when I hear them. Usually things like variations of Hayden: Kayden, Jayden etc. And Cason, Mason etc.

feelingmellow · 29/10/2014 16:04

Sean when not Irish - just seems wrong
Charmaine - obviously . Why, just why would anyone do it?
Wayne - ditto
Rex - a dog's name
Sebastian - namby pamby
Julian - ditto
Lavinia - reminds me of lave or lavvy and bronco toilet paper - ugh

sunflower49 · 29/10/2014 16:19

I know somebody with a Lavinia and yes, first thing that springs to mind is nickname 'Lavvy' or 'Loo' or whatever other crueler ones kids'll undoubtedly come out with for her, at some point!

ginnycreeper5 · 29/10/2014 19:01

Martha
Arthur
Gertrude
Agnes

In fact, anything that sounds old lady/old man, masquerading as Vintage pull the other one

Leanne
Daisy - Only cows should have this name
Most Flower names. they all sound trite

Regina. A name loved by Poash people apparently, but it sounds SO wrong Blush
Same with Vanessa. The V is too harsh and gutteral and The Va part is too much like Va gina Just yucky.

Alice is a pretty name. Surprised to see people don't like it. Alicia is nice as well.
