Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

Sara is Welsh for Sarah, it's Saa-rah. But there are a lot

manicinsomniac · 01/06/2014 20:51

oh ok, fair enough.

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/06/2014 20:51

Fgs

...a lot of English Sara's who pronounce it like Sarah

FidelineandFumblin · 01/06/2014 20:53

Well I still envy DH and DC2 who never ever ever get asked how their names are spelt.

manicinsomniac · 01/06/2014 20:57

So is there a way of deciding which spellings are genuine and which are made up do we think? Or, as all spellings must be made up at some point, are some just more recent than others and all equally valid?

I have come across:
Alexandra/Aleksandra
Amy/Aimee/Amie
Adele/Adelle
Austin/Austen
Adrian/Adrien
Alan/Allan/Allen
Alana/Alanna/Alannah
Alia/Aliya/Aliyah/Aaliyah/Aleah
Anna/Ana
Alex/Alix
Alice/Alys
Ashley/Ashleigh/Ashlie/Ashlee
Abbie/Abi/Abby/Abbey
Aaron/Arran
Aiden/Aidan/Ayden
Anabel/Annabel/Annabelle/Anabelle
Alison/Allison/Allyson
Abigail/Abbigail/Abagail/Abigayle
Amina/Ameena/Aaminah

And that's just names beginning with A!

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/06/2014 21:01

Some on that list I would consider misspelt however a fair few are legitimate variants based on language eg

Alex/Alix
Alice/Alys

ouryve · 01/06/2014 21:07

No to Jayden and all variations of it's spelling. There are some not so middle class names that I like, but that's not one of them.

IceRocket · 01/06/2014 21:12

Dd starting school in sept. Jayden is the most popular name in the year group

Deverethemuzzler · 01/06/2014 21:17

Mine is the only one in his whole school
I do not live in a mc area.

DollyWosits · 01/06/2014 21:23

I don't like Jayden but I love Joseph.

I love Jay.

SheherazadeSchadenfreude · 01/06/2014 21:24

Aleksandra is the Polish spelling.

I've only known Louis' prn Lou-ee

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/06/2014 21:34

Gah what is wrong with me today?!

But know people pronounce it like Lewis too, eg the Olympic gymnast

mercibucket · 01/06/2014 21:36

Teachers are often quite prejudiced against the name 'jayden'. It is one of the 'naughty' names. Read something in TES about it once. I'll try and find it

And it is very laden with class connotations. Fine if you are ok with that.

mercibucket · 01/06/2014 21:40

i haven't found the article i was looking for, but you all might enjoy fighting over this list instead

I know quite a dew Jayden's. They are all MC and all from South African backgrounds. Perhaps it's more culturally popular there.

Deverethemuzzler · 01/06/2014 22:20

I am always astounded at the way teachers will happily admit to such shite.

If I did that I would get sacked.

My God if I got a referral on my desk, read the name and though 'he is going to be naughty' I would be really, really bad at my job.

But if people are happy to deal with being thought bad at their job, fine if they are ok with that.

HavannaSlife · 01/06/2014 22:48

There was a thread on here where a couple of teachers said theyd never taught a well behavied Connor. (Ds1 is connor)

Alisvolatpropiis · 01/06/2014 22:55

Havanna

That's just their anecdotal experiences, which is fine to share, rather than a blanket "all children with this name are badly behaved".

Connor is a nice name Smile

I've never met a nice Kyle. I've met two of them. I'm sure there are lots of nice Kyles in the wider world!

FidelineandFumblin · 01/06/2014 22:57

You see, that would steer me away from Connor. Not completely disuade me if I adored Connor, but bump it a few places down my shortlist if I heard a dozen teachers agree about it.

Strange because I'm feisty to the point of contrariness normally but names just seem like such a BIG permenant thing Hmm
