Finding it really hard to pick a boys name, I've got a little boy called Louie and thinking of Jayden for this one could be shortend to J or middle name will be Joseph as that's my dads name so Jayden Joseph could also be JJ. Honest opinions please :)

some of them are [shock horror] made up in forrin lands

Ooo yes mine was made up in forrin lands. Does that get me right-on non-MC points and a permit to not be keen on Jayden and Ptolemy then

Well, Jayden isn't from a forrin land, it's from a whole different planet - Barkon IV. And it was made up in 2370, meaning it hasn't actually been invented yet so I don't know why you're arguing over a name that doesn't exist. Or something.

I actually wanted to call DS5 Ptolemy. I wish I'd been brave enough sometimes! From chav to pretentious toff-ness! Brains would have exploded in confusion!

It's leh-thee-seeah. And you need to say it in Spanish. GAVEL.

FidelineandFumblin · 01/06/2014 19:50

On a more serious note, spelling is another problem with Jayden. As someone who has spent a lifetime being asked to spell my name, I would count ambiguous spelling as a major con against a name.

FatherSpodoKomodo · 01/06/2014 20:03

As a Vicky I have also spent my life being asked to spell my name and it's not an unusual name, just has lots of different spellings, like Jayden although that's the right way to spell it, obvs. Wink

I wouldn't discount a name because of different ways to spell it, there are quite a few names like that. In fact, 2 of my other boys often have their names spelled another way, and they don't have unusual names.

burgatroyd · 01/06/2014 20:05

Genius post, Fatherspodo!

OP, still considering Jayden?

HavannaSlife · 01/06/2014 20:11

I like Jaydon, nothing wrong with it. Is Jago even a name? Ive never heard of it. and I think it sounds awful sorry

I have a joseph, yeah lots of people think its boring but it was dps choice and it suits him well enough

Deverethemuzzler · 01/06/2014 20:15

Like steven, stephen, Karen, Caron, Rebecca, Rebekah, Geoffrey, Jeffery, Sarah, Sara etc?

manicinsomniac · 01/06/2014 20:17

Havanna - my mum's cat is called Jago. She adopted him and when he arrived he was Diego. My mum insists that she has anglicised the name by making it Jago but it still sounds Spanish and like it ought to be 'Ee-ar-go' to me. However, my mother is massively more intelligent and well read than I am so I bow to her superior knowledge on this one.

FidelineandFumblin · 01/06/2014 20:28

DV Steven/Stephen is clarified quickly with the question 'v or ph?'; Karen/Caron with 'with a K or like Leslie Caron?' and so on

All of those examples have two standard spellings to distinguish between and anything else would be unusual.

Jayden has myriad spellings and will frequently need to be spelt out in full. Admittedly a minor point, but it is true of lots of such names.

AlpacaYourThings · 01/06/2014 20:34
Alisvolatpropiis · 01/06/2014 20:36

Jago is Cornish

Deverethemuzzler · 01/06/2014 20:41

Oh come on Fide

You are just as likely to get 'how are you spelling that' if your name is one of those as you are if you are called jaidon, jayden or jaden! As if someone asking that is any more time consuming than 'with a v or ph? 'as in Karen with K or like Leslie?'

I should know. My name is up there and my son is called Jaidon!

I live this dread life of mixed up spellings and clarifications. Ok I admit it, its awful, I struggle but I endure!

I will not be beaten. I.will.survive.

manicinsomniac · 01/06/2014 20:44

That Michael McIntyre thing is funny but it's inaccurate from the start, surely? Sara and Sarah are different names aren't they?

I've always said them as 'Saar-uh' (Sara) and 'Sair-uh' (Sarah)

Deverethemuzzler · 01/06/2014 20:46

mega lulz at that alpca and not a jaden in sight Grin

The Op likes Louis too, or should that be Lewis and if it is Louis will people not wonder if its Lou - ee or Lo-isss

Best stick to John
or Jon

Bugger!

Deverethemuzzler · 01/06/2014 20:47

No they are not
Some people pronounce both with Sair ruh or Saar - uh regardless of the spelling

SanityClause · 01/06/2014 20:48

My aunt is called Sair-uh, spelt Sara, manic.

FatherSpodoKomodo · 01/06/2014 20:48

Vicky Vicki Vickie Vikki Vicci. When I was younger I used to just get asked "with a y or i" but someone has made up lots of new spellings of my name. The very cheek of it.

And DH has the same as well as his name can be spelled in different ways. In fact I got it wrong when I first met him!

FatherSpodoKomodo · 01/06/2014 20:49

Yes, I have a friend called Sara pronounced Sair-ur, as well as one called Sara, pronounced Saar-uh. And the usual Sarahs. Too confusing. We should all be called the one name and be done with it.
