Is Griffin a contender?

Ok! I am struggling hideously with a name for the little boy who is about to make a grand entrance in my life.

I have previous threads highlighting my 'issues' (crazy super rich and upper class Mil, wet husband rooting for the boring names, stupid stupid surname)

So...

Griffin House (does it sound a bit Harry Potterish)
Lysander House (Lice House??? Sandy House???)
Thomas House (sooooooo boring?)

Lysander and Thomas have been floating around, but never really loved etc. Griffin is new.

Help...

I've only come across Griffin as a surname in RL, but I think it transfers well and would make a lovely first name. But not with your surname (sorry).

Of the other two, I prefer Lysander as a name, but do think "lice" is a possible nn. You could minimise (but not remove) the risk of that taking hold if you established another nn, but I'm not sure what that could be for you (Sandy House sounds a bit like a beach hut).

They sound like national trust properties sorry....
Particularly Griffin.

Griffin House is one of the HQ for Vauxhall's cars. My friend used to work there. Sorry.

The trouble is, everything sounds like a museum/bank/mental institution or has disasterous connotations when shortened to a nickname.

Our Ds is Arthur House (half a house = bungalow)
So I think I just have to but the national trust bullet and commit to a name.

Also I have a lot of nephews and all of my best friends have had little boys of late so lots and lots of names have been 'taken'

Honestly, stick pretty much any boys name in front of 'House' and google it... bank/museum/old people's home etc etc

I HATE our stupid stupid surname.

I like Griff/Griffin but yes, with House it does sound very HP.

What about Fergus?

Hmmm no none of them work. How about ermmmm. No they all sound like an address.

Griffin House isn't good. It does sound harry potterish I'm afraid. I think you need something more "normal" with your surname. Thomas is the best out of your list.

I'm not sure naming your child after a mythical creature is the best move. I know everyone has their own personal preferences but think about how he might be perceived as he gets older.

As Lysander is a rather Jilly Cooper name to me, it made me think of Ferdinand. Any good?

it doesn't sound so architectural to me, and a quick google reveals only one flower shop (other hits are all about Rio Ferdinand and where he lives).

People will either think "Harry Potter" or "Griffin, as in Nick...."

For the surname House, you're going to have to go with traditional names, sorry. I do think Tom House sounds fine. Thomas House has a lot of 's' sounds, but other than that, lovely. I'd avoid names that end in a 's' sound.

I know I could go with a forbidden taken name, but we've all been friends for nearly twenty five years and see each other all of the time, and it's kind of an unwritten rule! Plus Dh has vetoed a lot of the names anyway.

My ds has a friend with the surname Windows. His parents have given him a 'place name' as a first name so now he sounds like a double glazing company. However, to be fair a lot of names would with a surname like that.

I don't mind Griffin House. However I think Griff as a pet name sounds nice.
