Is Griffin a contender?

Ok! I am struggling hideously with a name for the little boy who is about to make a grand entrance in my life.

I have previous threads highlighting my 'issues' (crazy super rich and upper class Mil, wet husband rooting for the boring names, stupid stupid surname)

So...

Griffin House (does it sound a bit Harry Potterish)
Lysander House (Lice House??? Sandy House???)
Thomas House (sooooooo boring?)

Lysander and Thomas have been floating around, but never really loved etc. Griffin is new.

Help...

Shock Alexander is out then.

My Sil is called Jonty but its great for boys also.

MaryWestmacott · 12/05/2014 09:21

why are Oscar and Joshua out? other people you know with those names? I like both with House.

Jack and George are numerous for good reasons, they are nice names.

It might be better making a list of names you like and telling your DH if he can't think of any, he can just pick off your list.

MaryWestmacott · 12/05/2014 09:24

oh x post with Jonathan/Jonty! I love the name Jonty, I know 2 Jonathan's but in both cases, their parents are the only ones to use Jonathan, everyone else says Jon or Jonny. If you introduced him as Jonty, people will use that. (I understand with a traditional family, you're going to have to put Jonathan on the birth certificate, but that will be the only place it has to be used).

Jonty House. Sorted.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 12/05/2014 09:25

WOLFGANG

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 09:25

Oscar & Josh are two of my nephews.

Love Gabriel, but can't get over 'Gay House'Shock

If you like Griffin, what about Gifford?

emsyj · 12/05/2014 09:27

I have known two Jontys, both only ever known as Jonty so don't see why you can't use that - if you want to put Jonathan on the birth certificate then do, but no reason why he can't just be Jonty for ever more?

I love Griffin. I know of a little boy called Griffin (actually scratch that, he's in his late 20s now.... but I haven't seen him since he was a little boy) and always thought it was a lovely name.

Conrad is very nice too.

Only1scoop · 12/05/2014 09:27

Gabriel is good....

Surely would be abbreviated to Gabe not GayeConfused

One would hope.

WowOoo · 12/05/2014 09:31

I think Griffin is a fab choice. I also think the surname is good with lots of the names suggested.

There's nothing wrong with a name being memorable, but some of them are hilarious and you don't want to be blamed for constant ribbing throughout his life!

Have an old friend from years ago called Gruff (pronounced Griff). I love the sound of the name.

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 09:31

Super traditional In-laws.
Plus Ds will go to a very posh prep school and onwards (Mil insistance and therefor she's picking up the tab) so will need a 'proper' not too trendy name that has substance, but a good nickname that doesn't meen fanny (Willy House)

Both Dh and I are ex public school and know that any name that can be turned into something 'hilarious' will be...

I'm going to stick Jonathan 'Jonty' House back in the running (still hate jonathan, but really, for the life of me, couldn't tell you why!!?!! Is it a hormone thing? I immediately think of Jonathing King- which is a bit weird isn't it?)

Phillip House
Frederick House
Dominic House

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 09:38

So.... to summarise...

Griffin.
I really love this, but it does sound ridiculous with our surname. Nn Griff is awesome and goes well with Arthur (Ds1). Dh likes it. Good history (tudor name) and not too common.
Also... not been used by family or friends.

Jonathan.
Hate the name.
However... lovely nn 'Jonty'. Suitably upper class for cucumber sandwich eating Mil, Dh hates name too, but loves nn. Not too common, but still 'normal' Goes well with Arthur and is a good solid rugby name.

Lysander.
Silly nicknames, bit wet sounding. Greek.

I know a 17yr old Griffin - my contribution would be Edmund, Rufus and Montgomery nn Monty. Could Jonty be Jolyon if you don't like Jonathon?

callamia · 12/05/2014 09:41

Gregory?

smable · 12/05/2014 09:45

Bruno I realise it's a marmite choice but I think Bruno House sounds fine, it is unusual, fits with Arthur and if I remember correctly from your previous posts your children will be going to public school where Bruno would be perfectly acceptable.

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 09:46

Rufus House has been vetoed due to the roof house thing.

Frederick (love love love freddie) but is best friend's 6 week old son (I was gutted, but delighted for her!)

Freddie could be Alfred or Wilfred, one sounds daft with Arthur, the other has been taken.

I literally have spent 8 months scouring the top 1000 baby boy names and we are down to these three!

Snorted coffee at your 'Alexander' explanation!
Noah
Rafferty (might get Rafters tho!)
Jude
Jefferson
Jacob
Donovan
Jake
Mason
Parker
(Nearly typed Cole doh!)
Quinn
Rowan
Trey
Kobe
Cody
Callan
Tristan
Xander

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 09:50

Love Gregory, but apparently it's funny because it's off the telly (?) Something to do with hugh laurie?

Lawrnce- there's another one.
Laurie- lovely
Laurie House- garage.

Not a fan of Bruno, makes me think of the fat kid that was turned into a mouse on thd witches!!!

I sewar pregnancy hormones make that kind of association a million times worse. A rational person wouldn't even think twice about it, but it makes me want to cry and eat doughnuts.

ChishandFips33 · 12/05/2014 09:50

Can you not just go for 'Jonty' as his birth name, cutting out the need for 'Jonathan' ?

BigfootFiles · 12/05/2014 09:52

Griff Rhys Jones is Griffith. Griffith House?

Based on your thread title alone, I thought it was a politics thread talking about Nick Griffin! Peter Griffin is also not the best association (Family Guy).

CinnabarRed · 12/05/2014 09:54

Even leaving aside the surname complications, my very first thought on Griffin was - must be racist parents. Because of Nick. Really sorry.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 12/05/2014 09:56

Griffin is horrible, sorry. Makes me think of Nick Griffin, and it's just not a very attractive sound.

Ferdinand is BRILL. Ferdinand House - it really can carry the surname. Pick this, insist with your DH, and don't tell your MIL. Go absolutely bananas if you have to and threaten to leave him and enrol them in a local comprehensive if he argues.

If for whatever reason Ferdinand is out - how about getting to Jonty from Jonas or Jonah?

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 12/05/2014 09:57

Oooh x-posts!

NO TO GRIFFIN.

I do know a couple of Gruffs (prn. Griff), but from Gruffydd.

smable · 12/05/2014 09:58

I was going to suggest Lawrence/Laurie but thought it would be too traditional for your taste, I honestly don't think Laurie House is a problem, as you've said almost any name will be difficult with your last name but some are obviously worse than others, objectively speaking I don't think that Laurie House is bad at all, certainly no more a problem than Arthur.

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:00

Would love to go with just jonty, but he really will need a 'proper' name on the birth cert.

It's not so bad as ds1, he is the heir, so this one is only the spare, but will be expected to have a formal title etc.

Long long long story, but Mil is a BIG factor in all of this and an almighty pain in the arse (bitch).

Emotional, financial and just plain good old fashioned blackmail come in to play regularly.

Have got her to drop her relentless case for Roderick, but will have to give a nod to the 'family honour' (and all that bullshit) by giving Ds a 'socially fitting' name to his 'status'

What a cock she is. She seems to forget he's half farmer (my side!)... or maybe she can't forget and that's the problem.

Promised myself this wouldn't end up as a Mil rant... whoops!
