Is Griffin a contender?

Ok! I am struggling hideously with a name for the little boy who is about to make a grand entrance in my life.

I have previous threads highlighting my 'issues' (crazy super rich and upper class Mil, wet husband rooting for the boring names, stupid stupid surname)

So...

Griffin House (does it sound a bit Harry Potterish)
Lysander House (Lice House??? Sandy House???)
Thomas House (sooooooo boring?)

Lysander and Thomas have been floating around, but never really loved etc. Griffin is new.

Help...

Jonty can also be a nickname for John if you're not a fan of Jonathan. I think Jonty House sounds nice.

janie2 · 12/05/2014 10:03

Jonty is a great name! I know it's a bit plain but John really isn't that popular but string and traditional. could be Jonty as nn?
Others

Ralph (know the cutest boy with this name)
Hugo
Euan
Fergus
Angus

Good luck!

janie2 · 12/05/2014 10:04

Good thinking stretch

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:05

Ha ha ha.
Hadn't even thought about Nick Griffin
Which is hilarious as I work in politics.

Oh good god!

That would not have gone down well with the big boss!!

Thank god for mumsnet.

I can see it now.... 'racist tory names son for Nasty Nick...'

Ha ha ha. Although, may have given Mil a heart attack, thus killing one bird eith one stone!

I once lived in Griffin Close, so Griffin House would feel rather like an address to me. Anything faintly surname like is going to have the same problem I feel.

I like Marcus House, but what ever you choose it has to shout first name very clearly.

You need something that would be Saint Xxxxx house or Xxxx's House before it becomes an address.

Eg. You might live in Saint John's way, but John Street is much more unlikely.

MrsYoung · 12/05/2014 10:06

What about Charles, with nn Charlie? Suitably public school and sounds ok with House

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:06

John House is a toilet in both australia and america!!

OP posts:
StretchyCat · 12/05/2014 10:07

And I think John House sounds good and not like a place. You could go for an adventurous middle name... John Lysander House..?

Only potential issue is John being US word for loo but I don't think that's a massive concern if he'll be known as Jonty.

I love Jonty Smile

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:07

Hate the name Charlie...

Best friend from school (charli) ran off with ex boyfriend (charlie) just before I met Dh, very grateful in long rung... not so hot at the time.

Right- I'm iff to get in (wallow) the bath, I've decided today is the day to name House Junior Junior. Just going to do it and get something embroidered so I can't change my mind. (Did this with Ds1, it worked a treat)

Once it's done, it's done and this insanity can stop!

OP posts:
MrsYoung · 12/05/2014 10:11

Ok, good reasons for hating Charlie!

Joseph? Nn Joe? Too biblical for mil?! Toby?

DebbieOfMaddox · 12/05/2014 10:13

If you like Ferdinand then just tell DH that that's what you're calling him Grin. Because you've eliminated every other boys' name in the entire universe, so he's just going to have to deal with it.

But while we're eliminating names...

Douglas
Magnus
Peregrine / Perry (possibly too posh even for your MIL?)
Ludovic / Ludo (ditto?)
Jasper
Leander (a bit like Lysander but without the Lice)
Warwick
Jago

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:13

Also- love Ralph, but anything ending in s, ph, th, is a mouthful with house

Ralph House... say it out loud, you end up 'losing' the H of House

nicename · 12/05/2014 10:17

Makes me think of that nasty bnp man and a pub in Glasgow. Or a beaky little creature.

Not a 'people' name.

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:18

No, Mil has a godson Peregrine. ?. She loves it, too posh for me though!!!!

I'm the common (weakest!) Link in all of this!

Love Magnus, but makes me think of cider. Also ending in s, so sounds a bitfunny with the House, I end up saying Magnus souse.

But that's probably because I am daft and have far too much saliva being pregnant!! (Any one else... no.., just me then!)

Right... I'm getting in this bath before Ds1 awakes andi have to go through another day smelling a bit funny and having hair like a hedgehog.

I see Ralphowse unless could be a slip....

Was Lawrence a no no?

I think any names of places or surnaname like Christian names could be avoided....

As doesn't flow at all with House.

When at school his 'House' may even be his own Grin

Only1scoop · 12/05/2014 10:23

Op thank goodness Roderick is out....

'Rod House' well....it's just so phallic Grin

BigfootFiles · 12/05/2014 10:24

If you like Jonty what about Jolyon?

Arsebadger · 12/05/2014 10:30

Think whoever suggested Dominic was on the money. Dominic House sounds great

florascotia · 12/05/2014 10:38

Merlin
Gwylim
Cuthbert (Bertie)
Dougal
Gerald (or Welsh version, Geraint)
Petroc
Patrick
Wayland/Weland

If you use John/Jonathan/Jonas/Jonah as a middle name, you could still have Jonty as an 'everyday' name, keeping the first name for formal occasions.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 12/05/2014 10:40

I think Ferdinand DieMILdie! House has a real ring to it.

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:41

Jolyon sounds like it should be Julian, but isn't! nephew (yes, another one!) is Julian.

I'm the last to breed in a family that loves to have so many children that you need a minibus.

And I'm one of five so, all of whom carry the male dominant gene (I have four brothers!) so there are Soooooo many boys. One of my brother's has 6, each with three names, that's 18 names!!!

Plain greedy.

Dh vetoed Dominic, can't remember why, but he was pretty definite.

Joseph.

Would you say Josephowse... Much like ralphowse?

Mrsfullhouse · 12/05/2014 10:45

Getting revenge on Mil...
Holding up pictures of her at home and getting Ds to call her 'gollum'.

If I can't kill her by death ray mind control, this is the next best thing.

I like Patrick, Dh doesn't.

Dh wants Jack, George, Joe.

I don't. :-(

OublietteBravo · 12/05/2014 10:46

I really like Jonty - perhaps you could use it as a nickname for St John (which would presumably be posh enough for MIL).

Or you could stick with the Arthurian theme and go with Galahad (Al).
I also quite like Leopold (Leo), Nathaniel (Nate), Quentin (nut sure about a nickname - Tin-Tin???) and Ulrich (can't think of a nickname for this) with your surname.

janie2 · 12/05/2014 10:50

I think the merging of the final sounds happens a lot without anyone really noticing because we don't pronounce every sound in words when we used connected speech. Most of the time when someone us saying both names together there will be a reason like register or rugby team list. In reality I dont think it will be the issue you think it is now? But I havw a scottish accent and I might not say it the same!!!!
