Help me find a boys name...

I am going to be really fussy, dismissive for ridiculous reasons and probably sound like an arse on this thread. But I am really stuck. We've had a girls name set for a few months and I am still happy with it. But the boys name.. we keep going off them.

I need help.

I don't want anything common, in both senses of the word.

Our list thus far has been:
Jackson
Deacon
Brodie
Caleb

And I liked them all at first, and now I hate them. I think they sound chavvy. I have a DS with a top 10 name and thankfully he goes by a lesser used NN anyway, but still, I don't want to repeat that. He's one of 4 in his year.

HELP!

I think that your best bet might be looking back through your family tees and seeing if there is something suitable and you may therefore love it more as it has some meaning? Look at surnames, maiden names and middle names.

There are a few in our trees that we considered really seriously, in the end we didn't go for them but you may just stumble across something good that's ahead of the curve and therefore neither common or chavy

Names we considered by doing that were;

Beck
Walker
Grant
Davies/Davis
Marwick
Barclay
Kerr
Laurie

Other options:

Christy
Carrick
Dalton
Devin
Easton
Gray
Hugh
Lorne
Lowrie
Moir
Ramsay

Literally couldn't care less about 'meanings' of names. I don't have a family tree to look back on anyway. DH wouldn't care, he's not close with his family.

Don't like those. Mason and Preston are Chavvy..

tbh if you just have a very rough idea of 5-10 possible names, when you see baby you will know what suits.

the perfect name is out there somewhere!!

Dominic. Troy. Zane. Blaine. Eddard. Jethro. Horace. Finlay. Frasiar.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 19/01/2014 21:14

You could just have a private gender scan... maybe you don't need to be putting yourselves through this... Grin

ChaffinchOfDoom · 19/01/2014 21:14

ooooh,.....

Hunter

Writerwannabe83 · 19/01/2014 21:19

Me and DH are going for Arran - not common but not silly either.

Maybe a gender scan is the way to go Grin

florascotia · 19/01/2014 21:29

Good luck - we're in the same position and none of the names I have suggested above are right but I'll pass over the wisdom. DH and I have agreed a girls name, boys names we have some we like, none we love and no such luck on your thread either, apart from Tiernan, I do quite like that....

Juno77 · 19/01/2014 21:57

I don't think waiting until it's born will help. All babies look the same, and they change so much I think that's an odd way to do it.

Arran is an island near us.

Jowan? Talek? Jacca? HORACE?!

And surely, no one actually names their child a name with only two letters (Ty). Really? Levi is Chavvy.

Lincoln is more my cup of tea.

It's so hard! I wasn't nearly as fussy for the girls name.

You seem to like surname type names. I'm afraid what you're struggling with is the way they can be perceived. Unfairly yes but you seem to have made an association. You may have to let go of the notion of 'chavvy'. Surname type names can evoke a Marmite reaction but in Scotland they're pretty standard ime.

Juno77 · 19/01/2014 22:24

Is there nothing a bit classier that fits this category?

I do like surname type names but not obvious ones. Obvious ones are Chavvy.

My mother is a secondary school headteacher and wouldn't forgive me if I chose something considered 'chavvy' Grin

How about Ellis?

Juno77 · 19/01/2014 22:35

I love ellis. Great name.

But.. It's my cousins surname.

OP posts:
Secretlypregnant · 19/01/2014 22:37

Elliot?

soontobeslendergirl · 19/01/2014 22:39

Ha - Ellis is a schemey name round my way :) on the other hand Innes has a very similar sound but isn't.

Personally I still think that Brodie or Austin are the closest to what you are looking for from the names that you have said that you like or liked.

Juno77 · 19/01/2014 22:39

I like Elliot for a girl. Not for a boy. Too boring.

OP posts:
Juno77 · 19/01/2014 22:41

Yeah actually Ellis might be a bit schemey. Hadn't thought long enough on account of dismissing it instantly as it's my cousins surname.

DH won't go for Brodie on account of homeland.

Austin is okay but not strong enough for me to go for

sausageandorangepickle · 19/01/2014 22:43

soontobeslendergirl · 19/01/2014 22:45

I think you already dismissed it, but Keir is another in similar style. Non chavvy, surnamey, not common but normal.
