Help me find a boys name...

I am going to be really fussy, dismissive for ridiculous reasons and probably sound like an arse on this thread. But I am really stuck. We've had a girls name set for a few months and I am still happy with it. But the boys name.. we keep going off them.

I need help.

I don't want anything common, in both senses of the word.

Our list thus far has been:
Jackson
Deacon
Brodie
Caleb

And I liked them all at first, and now I hate them. I think they sound chavvy. I have a DS with a top 10 name and thankfully he goes by a lesser used NN anyway, but still, I don't want to repeat that. He's one of 4 in his year.

HELP!

Hee hee, I'm sure you say it like Mila Jovovich :)

TheSporkforeatingkyriarchy · 23/01/2014 11:31

Ardor, Avi, Brennus, Casey, Constantine, Cyrus, David, Dietfried, Evren, Franklin, Gratian, Iestyn, Justice, Lovel, Loyal, Merit, Nelson, Noble, Parker, Pax, Sage, Sonder, Owen, Stellan, Valor, Virtue, Wilfred, Zeal, Zurien

So going back to your original list with the middle name too are you still considering any of them?

Jackson James
Deacon James
Brodie James
Caleb James

I am probably in the minority but I think Jackson James sounds great (although am bias as DS's middle name is Jackson as it was my granny's maiden name)

We had a few names in mind for No1 son. When he was born, the names didn't feel like they belonged on a real person for some reason. We then sat with the graduation notices in the paper and drew a short list of two from that (Gregor & Craig).

So, when we were expecting No2, we didn't bother thinking in advance and he didn't have a name for a week and a half - we really expected him to come with a label! In the end we made a short list and just kept passing the lists back and forward and striking names of until we had one each left. Luckily those were very similar and we managed to make a compromise name out of them both (Ciaran & Keir - ended up with Ciar).

We had a girls name both times and I assume we would have used it but then maybe we wouldn't have in the same way that we didn't use the boys names we had in mind originally.

Jackson James does sound lovely...

I'm just worried because of the connotations of Jackson.

(watching my language here now. There was even a TAAT started about me Hmm)

Are you okay with him being called JJ? It's not inevitable, but I remember from school quite a few boys (whose initials allowed) being called by the initials only. I remember an AJ, CJ, LJ and TC.

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 11:50

It wouldn't particularly bother me, though we wouldn't personally use it so not sure if other children would. I'm not sure how often middle names come up, really.

I don't care about other peoples nn's for my DC though, I'm not precious like that at all.

The thing with connotations is that they are very regional IMHO. Plus it depends how much you really care if you love a name. Now, outing myself here my DS is,called Kyle. A,name that is not approved on MN. I didnt use mumsnet when pregnant with him and therefore was chosing a name we loved with no influences. His name doesnt have any negative connotations where we live (small village in Scotland) and although we might move it wouldnt be down south or anything.

Not sure what point I am trying to make but pick a name you love, that will suit your little Boy and he will be that name. My little DS is à Kyle, i cant imagine him being called anything else despite the MN negative comments. We wanted a name you couldnt ahorren, was easy to spell and was Scottish and that was the name we both liked!

I think Jackson James is à cool name !

Theonlyoneiknow · 23/01/2014 13:05

And when it came to naming DC2 I had discovered MN and I did ask for thoughts on my shortlist but in my heart I knew I would call DD our favourite name from the list, no matter what comments were given.

peggyundercrackers · 23/01/2014 13:39

its funny juno you keep saying you want something different, strong sounding but dismiss lots of names saying they are 'chavvy' but by saying you want something different that in itself says 'chavvy' to me...

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 13:43

peggy I think it is fair to say that if this thread has taught us anything, it's that different people have different perceptions of chavvy Grin

I don't think having a different name is chavvy, anyway. Imagine everyone had to be named out of the top 10!

Conway?

JayeAshe · 23/01/2014 14:21

Ivor
Glyndwr
Gwyn
Mowbray
Dennis
Francis

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 14:24

I know a (very old) man called Mowbray and I can't decide if I love it or hate it.

The rest aren't to my taste, sorry. Wouldn't even know how to pronounce Glyndwr (Glynn-dwur? Probably not!)

peggyundercrackers · 23/01/2014 14:24

junno top 10 changes all the time so whats in the top 10 today is chavvy tomorrow :)

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 14:29

Well, maybe but the classics aren't ever going to change.

Charles
Thomas
Harry
Oliver
Jack
William
James

Etc etc. All nice names, just plain, boring and perennial 'top' names.

SomewhatSilly · 23/01/2014 14:34

Pork pies (Melton Mowbray)

Sorry :o

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 14:56

Yeah, agree...

OP posts:
SomewhatSilly · 23/01/2014 15:12

Aubrey? Fletcher?

monicalewinski · 23/01/2014 15:43

Rhodri
Declan
Lachlan
Gregor
Henrik
Erik
Rhys

Some of these have been mentioned already, but I wanted to join in as I thought you were unfairly picked on earlier in the thread!

None of the above are the names of my boys, so no offence will be taken! (They're all just names I've quite liked the sound of when I've heard them, and all go with James).

I'd probably give the name quest a rest for a few weeks though, then look back at all the suggestions with fresh, unjaded eyes - good luck!!

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 15:47

Yeah I think that might be a plan. Leave it for a few weeks and come back to the search refreshed!

Almost all of those names we have friends/family with! All but Rhodri and Gregor, but I am not keen.

I am so grateful to everyone that has helped. I might not have concluded on a name, but I have had a lot of realisation about what I do/don't like!

monicalewinski · 23/01/2014 15:53

Just thought of one more - Kelavie. I think that's how it's spelled, but it's pronounced 'Kel-a-vee'; one of my boys has a friend called this, it's the only time I've heard it.

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 16:08

Ooh, that is interesting!

Maybe a bit like c'est la vie..

OP posts:
TootlesPootles · 23/01/2014 16:36

Leander
Leolan

OP, I completely understand what the problem is. I really wanted unusual but not pretentious names for my DCs but we couldn't do it and ended up with strong but popular names. I tried, I really did Sad.

One thing to remember is that other people don't really care what you call your DC so you shouldn't worry too much and should just choose the name you like.

Good luck
