Help me find a boys name...

I am going to be really fussy, dismissive for ridiculous reasons and probably sound like an arse on this thread. But I am really stuck. We've had a girls name set for a few months and I am still happy with it. But the boys name.. we keep going off them.

I need help.

I don't want anything common, in both senses of the word.

Our list thus far has been:
Jackson
Deacon
Brodie
Caleb

And I liked them all at first, and now I hate them. I think they sound chavvy. I have a DS with a top 10 name and thankfully he goes by a lesser used NN anyway, but still, I don't want to repeat that. He's one of 4 in his year.

HELP!

See, I would say Delilah is incredibly chavvy!

Why not James as a first name?

I don't think people are narked because you don't like their suggested names, it was the way in which you said you don't like them. Anyway, I think Brodie is a fab name, so it's a shame you won't consider it.

Do you feel comfortable saying your other DC's name, so you can see if they flow together nicely?

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 10:13

Wips - at the risk of offending.. I find James a really bland name.

Delilah may well be chavvy! It was my grandmothers name and she recently died so definitely using it as middle name.

I really like Brodie, but DH isn't keen.

I don't want to say DS's name, as it could out me. It's a top 10 one though. Really classic and plain (and boring!)

Idris
Freddie/y
Jonpaul

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 10:18

I actually really like Freddie.

Difficult, we ran out of names after our third boy. Ellison?

candycoatedwaterdrops · 23/01/2014 10:22

Freddie James sounds nice!

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 10:23

My cousins surname is Ellis.

We aren't particularly close, so it couldn't be like a 'we named him after you' thing. It would just be weird.

My surname could be shortened to an actual name (like Matthews) and I would find it really odd if my cousins named their children that name.

Which is a shame as I like Ellis.

I like Freddie, or Fred. What about:

Max
Xavier

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 10:38

Really don't like Xavier

Max isn't a bad name, but surname is one syllable so really needs to be more than one syllable in the first name.

ConnieBowskill · 23/01/2014 10:40

Maxwell then?!!

WipsGlitter · 23/01/2014 10:42

Archie?

ConnieBowskill · 23/01/2014 10:46

Fungi ?Grin not serious suggestion

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 10:58

Oh no, Maxwell as in Kerry Katona.. sorry. Couldn't.

Also have an acquaintance with the surname Maxwell. Not a friend. Not a nice association (she's a huge PITA) Grin

Archie is cute but way too common. 2 born to friends recently.

Connie - at least he'd be a fun guy!!

Juno, I know where you're coming from!

I was also incredibly picky. I just found it so hard to find a name I loved for both DS and DD.

I read and rejected names from eight baby names books! I read the lists of all baby names from the previous years, nothing. I had a reason against all of them. In the end, DS was named at a day old, we chose one of the names from DP's list, which I'd also liked, but had a reason against. When I examined my reason, it was a silly one (it reminded me of a pop star, but it was a bit of a stretch, and actually no one is likely to know them by the time he grows up), so it turned out we had the name all along. I love his name now.

For DD however, she remained nameless for 2 weeks. I couldn't find "the name" and tbh, we chose the one we both liked, but I don't think we found the name. I still feel there is somewhere out there, the right name for her and we didn't find it. We just got to the point where she had to have a name! I like her name, I like it a lot. But it doesn't "fit" in the way DS's does. Perhaps she'll grow into it ...

Sorry, that was all about me not you! I just really wanted to say, I totally get the feeling that you haven't found the right name, and I understand your pickiness. I'm Shock that some people seemed to think this is a wind up!

I am enjoying reading your reasons why not too, refreshingly honest :) I can't say I agree with all of your reasons (you've discounted my DS's name) but that's no problem - names are very personal, that's the point, isn't it!

Perhaps, just perhaps, like me, you have his name already, but have discounted it? Could you look at some of the ones you've discounted, and ask yourself how much the reason matters to you, in the scheme of things?

Juno77 · 23/01/2014 11:07

pobble thank you for your story - this has made me feel so much better!

Maybe I do. Maybe we should go back and rethink one of the names..

I was pretty keen on Deacon, but I lived for a while in the southern US and have a lot of lovely associations with country music/names, which don't translate as well here.

DH is vair posh, isn't from the place we live, and thus has a different accent. He also loved it.. until one day we were out and heard someone call on their child. Suddenly, the name had a totally different sound. Also hate Deek as a NN.

I'm in the south west Juno, Devon to be precise and I think we have very similar taste because Delilah was my back up name for dd!!! And I don't think Delilah is chavvy at all I think it's a beautiful wistful sort of name, it makes me think of a beautiful arty type girl.....sort of regretting not using it now but dd has very dark hair and eyes so really suits Isabella it just fits her iyswim?
So yeah in short I think Isobel Delilah is gorgeous Smile

thepobblewhohasnotoes · 23/01/2014 11:17

I know what you mean about accents. DP was very keen on the name Lilou, think 5th Element. Now before I'm even going to get into whether I like the origin of the name etc, the sound rules it out for me.

Lilou sounds lovely when uttered by the beautiful Milla Jovovich, but when said with people with our local accent comes out more like Leee-loo. No, Just no! Grin

therunnawaybride · 23/01/2014 11:19

Pobble my cat's called Lilou! Grin
