Help me find a retro-ish name!

Not Jean Grin

I'm 6 weeks pregnant with DC2. Just playing around with names Smile

If baby is a boy he will most likely be Frank after my granda.

A girl is more difficult! DD is Cassie and we love her name. Not on the dreaded top 40 list but wacky not wacky either.

I like straightforward, pretty but non-flowery names with a retro feel.

I love Betty (and Betsy) but stupidly named the dog that not anticipating any more babies!

What do we think of my current favourite, Cherry? Not to everyone's taste I know but I'm in love with it right now Grin.

I also like Dulcie, Violet, Maggie (my father would disown me for Thatcher) and Ivy and I like Dahlia but DP doesn't.

Any ideas?

I'm wary of this because my sister has travelled to a country where my friend's DD's nickname means something quite obscene. My sister has pointed this out to me, and now her nickname has been a bit spoiled and my dsis and I only ever use her full name as once it's in your mind you can't forget it! Obviously I haven't mentioned it to my friend - she'd be devastated, and it doesn't apply in this country, anyway.

I didn't realise there was a difference between retro and old-fashioned Confused.

I mean cute and unusual 40's/50's inspired names as opposed to what are, imo, very dated 70's names like Deborah and Lindsey.

Sorry - this was the second message, the first one got lost.

To some people, the word 'Cherry' has associations of losing your virginity/female anatomy.

This is quite an old fashioned term, but a lot of people would still have this association with the word 'cherry' imho.

Retro is in. Old-fashioned is out. Old-fashioned is always out. Retro is old-fashioned enjoying a comeback.

If you introduced your child as cherry I hardly think anyone will jump to the losing your virginity association! I had a teacher at school called cherry and I never heard any of my secondary school aged peers day anything remotely like that! !

Love cherry and dolly how about Mavis? Cassie and Mavis sound lovely together Smile

Great great Auntie Dolly toured the music halls with her dance partner/gentleman friend. They even went to the USA! At one time they were billed as the World's only ski-dancers - there are pics of them, dancing on skis! She then retired and sank into an alcoholic mist for several decades but think she must have been quite a girl.

I think what you actually need are babies' names from the 1920s/30s as they would then be young adults in the 50s iyswim

Any of these take your fancy?

Oh, and I went to school with a girl named Cherry. She was Not Nice, so am afraid I cannot approve of it as a name for your DD.

I agree Jumping

Not keen on Mavis. It was the silly nickname for a friend of mine called Maeve.

Loving that link Bore.

Ruby jumped out at me - it was my favourite name for years but is far far FAR too popular now.

I bet this baby will be a boy now that I have all these fabulous girls names at my disposal Sad Grin .

I like Mitzi Bore. Not sure DP would though!

I'm not bothered by having another name ending in and ee sound. There aren't many single syllable names that I like.
